Zeid had surgery on his right foot in August and his left foot in October. Prior to the foot surgery, Zeid had a 6.97 ERA for the Astros in 23 relief outings last season. In 2013, Zeid had 3.90 ERA in 25 relief outings for the Astros, and in the minors from 2011-13, Zeid had an impressive 190 strikeouts in 179.2 innings. "We think he's healthy now, so we're looking forward to seeing what he can do," Tigers' GM David Dombrowski said. Zeid is competing against four other right-handers (Alex Wilson, Shad Smith, Jose Valdez, and Angel Nesbitt) for the last Tigers' bullpen spot, but given the publicity Zeid has been getting this spring training., he seems the favorite to win the job.

Zeid was knocked around the the tune of a 6.97 ERA in 23 appearances with the Astros last season, but he maintained a strikeout rate of 7.8 K/9 and trimmed his walk rate by nearly a full walk per nine innings (from 3.9 BB/9 to 3.0). The right-hander figures to compete for one of the team's final bullpen spots in spring training, assuming he's fully recovered from foot surgery.

Zeid's condition is officially being labeled as sesamoiditis, which causes inflammation at the bottom of the foot. The reliever will have the same procedure on his left foot six weeks later, but is expected to be fully ready for spring training. Zeid finishes his 2014 season with a 6.97 ERA and 1.79 over 23 appearances (20.2 innings) out of the bullpen.

"It's in its infancy," Zeid, who was acquired in the Hunter Pence deal, said. "It's not a finished product, but it's something that can help myself and my ballclub down the road."
