Boscan was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Friday, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Boscan has been up with the Pirates a couple of times this season, but never made an appearance for the club. He's now further from making a return, as he's no longer a member of the 40-man roster (assuming he passes through waivers unclaimed).

Boscan was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports.

Boscan will head back to Indianapolis after spending only a couple of days with the big league club during this latest stint. The right-hander has been called up twice previously but is yet to appear in a major league game. Boscan holds a 3.82 ERA in 17 appearances (15 starts) at Triple-A on the season.

Boscan was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday.

Boscan hadn't even been in the minors 10 days, but he'll be recalled due to the Pirates making a DL move with Gorkys Hernandez (shoulder) on Sunday morning. He'll provide bullpen depth for the afternoon contest.

The Pirates have until Friday to make a corresponding move, and they may opt for infield depth over an eighth reliever. The 25-year-old Boscan has yet to make his big-league debut, despite having two short stints with the Pirates this season. He's spent most of the season in the starting rotation for Triple-A Indianapolis, posting a 3.87 ERA, 6.0 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 over 76.2 innings.

Boscan will function mostly as depth in the bullpen for the Pirates' final game before the All-Star break. He's tossed 76.2 innings with a 3.87 ERA, but also with an uninspiring 1.526 WHIP and 1.5 K/BB ratio.

The Pirates are sacrificing a long reliever in exchange for outfield depth, with Jose Tabata coming up from Triple-A Indianapolis. Boscan didn't make an appearance during his brief stay in the majors, and he only has 20 strikeouts over six starts (31.1) for Indianapolis this season, albeit with a 2.87 ERA.

Boscan was called up by the Pirates on Saturday.

Boscan will be up to provide some much-need length out of the bullpen after the club was forced to use seven relievers in Friday's 12-inning loss to Chicago. The right-hander has posted a 2.87 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB in six starts for Indianapolis this season.
