Tanaka has only played the outfield in the majors, but he made 55 appearances at second base in 2013 at Triple-A. The Rangers are trying to find a fill-in for Jurickson Profar, who is out 10-12 weeks with a torn teres major muscle near his shoulder.

Per the Japanese newspaper Sponichi, the Rangers and OF Kensuke Tanaka have agreed upon a minor league contract.
The deal includes an invitation to spring training, according to NPB Tracker's Patrick Newman. The 32-year-old Tanaka, not to be confused with the phenom pitcher of the same surname, slashed .267/.353/.267 in 30 at-bats with the Giants this past season. He'll be organizational depth for the Rangers.

That's according to a report from Sponichi in Japan, translated by the Dallas Morning News. Tanaka was released by the Giants in September despite posting a promising set of numbers at Triple-A Fresno -- including a .400 OBP and 22 steals. The 32-year-old utilityman was a teammate of Rangers ace Yu Darvish on the Nippon Ham Fighters. He plays outfield and infield.
