Tue Feb 2000:49Hyun Jin Ryu Reportedly Signs With Former KBO Team
Korean media reported Monday that free-agent starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu signed a contract with his former KBO team, the Hanwha Eagles. The team has not confirmed the deal's finalization. The 36-year-old lefty played with the team from 2006 through 2012, earning Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awards in 2006. His big-league experience with the Dodgers and Blue Jays offered some solid fantasy seasons from 2013 through 2023. However, numerous injuries limited him to just 79 innings pitched over the last two seasons. At this point, Ryu can be crossed off the list of potential late-round fantasy options.

Mon Feb 1918:25Hyun Jin Ryu Could Return To Korea
Free-agent left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu is said to be entertaining an offer from his former Korean Baseball Organization team, the Hanwa Eagles. Ryu pitched for the Eagles from 2006 to 2012 and said that he will finish his career with the team. The 36-year-old veteran southpaw returned from Tommy John surgery last August and went 3-3 with a 3.46 ERA (4.91 FIP) and 1.29 WHIP with 14 walks and only 38 strikeouts in 52 innings in 11 starts down the stretch in his fourth year with the Toronto Blue Jays. His velocity was down, which shouldn't come as a huge surprise coming off Tommy John surgery, but at Ryu's age, he's no longer the strikeout artist he once was. Ryu's changeup also was much more hittable. Heading into his age-37 campaign and likely to head back to Korea, he's off the fantasy radar in 2024.

Wed Sep 6 202308:59Hyun Jin Ryu Taking On The Athletics Wednesday
Toronto Blue Jays southpaw Hyun Jin Ryu is ready for his next start, which will come on Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics. The veteran arm has been lights out since making his season debut on August 1, posting a 2.48 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 23 strikeouts and a 3-1 record across 29 innings of work. Still, Ryu's fantasy value is limited in standard formats with the low strikeout numbers and he can be kept on the waiver wire for most of his starts in shallow leagues. The A's are one of the worst teams in baseball offensively, though, so fantasy owners should start Ryu wherever they can.

Sat Aug 12 202313:29Hyun Jin Ryu Will Start Tomorrow For The Blue Jays
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu (knee) completed a successful throwing session on Friday and will start in Sunday's series finale against the Chicago Cubs. Ryu was hit on the knee by a comebacker in Monday's start so there was some concern that he wouldn't be available for his next turn. The 36-year-old lefty has a 4.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 5:2 K/BB ratio over nine innings (two starts) so far this year.

Thu Aug 10 202312:15Hyun Jin Ryu To Make His Next Start Sunday
Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu (knee) is scheduled to make his next start on Sunday against the Chicago Cubs. Ryu won't be forced to skip a start after leaving his last outing early on Monday against the Cleveland Guardians when he was hit on the right knee by a comebacker. Fortunately, X-rays came back negative, and the 36-year-old southpaw is feeling good enough to take his next turn in the starting rotation. Ryu has only made two starts for Toronto this year after making a return from Tommy John surgery. In his two starts, he's allowed four earned runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out five in nine innings. He'll continue to be an option for fantasy managers in deep-mixed leagues the rest of the season, but he has a tricky matchup on Sunday against Chicago.

Tue Aug 8 202318:23Hyun Jin Ryu Hopeful To Make Next Start
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu (knee) was forced to leave early during Monday's start after getting drilled by a comebacker in the knee. Luckily, the X-rays came back negative for any structural damage. It sounds like the southpaw is feeling better on Tuesday. That being said, the team is optimistic that Ryu will be able to make his next scheduled start versus the Chicago Cubs. Possibly, the team decides to push Ryu back a day or two, but this injury shouldn't require a trip to the injured list.

Mon Aug 7 202321:15Hyun Jin Ryu Leaves Monday's Start Early With Knee Bruise
Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu (knee) left his start against the Cleveland Guardians on Monday early with a right knee contusion. Ryu took a comebacker off of his knee during the fourth inning and was replaced following the inning by reliever Jay Jackson. On the play, Ryu was able to run over and cover first to get the final out of the inning following being struck on the knee but he appeared to be in pain after the play. He departed with a final line of four scoreless innings while allowing no hits and one walk and striking out two. Look for the Blue Jays to update his status in the coming days once he undergoes further testing.

Wed Aug 2 202300:22Hyun Jin Ryu Hit Hard In Season Debut Tuesday
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu did not have the best season debut in Tuesday's 13-3 loss to the Orioles. The 36-year-old, who returned from Tommy John surgery, allowed four runs on nine hits (including a home run) and a walk with three strikeouts over five innings pitched, taking the loss. This was certainly not an encouraging start, but Ryu did have a successful rehab assignment and has been a reliable fantasy starter throughout his career. His next start is slated to be a much more favorable matchup at the Guardians. Despite this, fantasy managers may want to sit Ryu until he shows that he can get things on the right track.

Fri Jul 28 202317:16Hyun Jin Ryu To Make Season Debut Tuesday
Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow) will make his 2023 season debut on Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles. It makes sense to temper expectations for Ryu, who is returning from Tommy John surgery, but he's still worth snagging off the waiver wire if he's available in your league. The 36-year-old veteran southpaw allowed only for earned runs on 13 hits while walking one and striking out 16 in 18 innings during his four minor-league rehab starts, and he might be facing much of an innings restriction now that he is back in Toronto's starting rotation the rest of the way. However, it would probably be wise to keep him benched for his first start back on Tuesday against the first-place Orioles.

Mon Jul 24 202321:44Hyun Jin Ryu Not Likely To Start This Weekend
Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow) is not likely to be activated from the 60-day injured list to start this upcoming weekend. Toronto manager John Schneider told reporters on Monday that Ryu is probably going to throw a simulated game in place of being activated. That puts the 36-year-old on track to be activated from the IL at some point next week. Ryu has not appeared in an MLB game since June 1, 2022.

Sat Jul 22 202316:31Hyun Jin Ryu To Rejoin Team On Monday
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow) is set to rejoin the team on Monday. Ryu made his final rehab appearance on Friday with Triple-A Buffalo. The 36-year-old hasn't pitched this season as he continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. The assumption is that Ryu is going to rejoin the Jays rotation. However, there isn't currently an open spot, so possibly Alek Manoah gets bounced out of the rotation. Fantasy managers will have to wait and see what the Jays decide to do. Ryu probably won't have much fantasy value unless he returns to the starting rotation.

Tue Jul 18 202317:26Hyun Jin Ryu To Make Another Rehab Start Friday
Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow) will make another minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Buffalo on Friday night, according to manager John Schneider. The plan is for Ryu to throw at least 80 pitches in the outing, and there's "not much more to check off" after that. As long as he avoids any setbacks on Friday, Ryu will likely rejoin Toronto's starting rotation. The Blue Jays feel fine about Ryu's velocity (87-88 mph) and expect that it will improve over time. The 36-year-old southpaw has yet to pitch in the big leagues in 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He's given up just two earned runs while walking none and fanning 11 in 12 innings over three minor-league rehab starts, and Ryu is a decent stash right now in deep-mixed leagues.

Sun Jul 16 202310:27Hyun Jin Ryu Looks Sharp During Saturday’s Rehab Start
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow) struck out five batters over five innings of one-run ball in his first Triple-A rehab start with Buffalo on Saturday. The 36-year-old has already gotten some action in the Florida Complex League, so he may only require one more start before a potential injured-list activation. Ryu missed the majority of 2022 and all of 2023 thus far after undergoing Tommy John surgery last fall stemming from left forearm inflammation. The left-hander represents a decent deeper-mixed/AL-only fantasy stash with a return on the horizon.

Sun Jul 9 202314:08Hyun Jin Ryu Fires Four Scoreless Innings In Rehab Start
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow) threw four shutout innings in his rehab start at Low-A Dunedin on Sunday. Ryu threw 37 pitches, 27 of which were strikes, during the outing. He punched out one and maxed out at 88.4 mph. The veteran left-hander has been out all season while recovering from offseason Tommy John surgery so this was a good sign for his progression. If all goes well, he could rejoin the Blue Jays rotation in late July or early August. He put up a 5.67 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over just 27 innings during the 2022 season before injuring his elbow.

Fri Jul 7 202321:47Hyun Jin Ryu Will Pitch Again On Sunday
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow) is scheduled to pitch again in Florida on Sunday. The left-hander recently got his first taste of action since undergoing Tommy John Surgery, tossing three innings and allowing one run while striking out five batters. Skipper John Schneider stated he could pitch four innings this time, which would be even better news for fantasy managers. Unfortunately, even if the 36-year-old is back a bit earlier than anticipated, he probably won't be an immediate fantasy producer.

Tue Jul 4 202318:00Hyun Jin Ryu Tosses Three Innings In Rehab Start
Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow) pitched in his first game action since having Tommy John surgery and allowed one run on four hits while walking none and striking out five in three innings in the Florida Complex League on Tuesday. Barring a setback as Ryu continues to build up his arm, he has a chance to contribute significant innings for the Blue Jays in the second half of the 2023 season. The 36-year-old southpaw will need to make at least a handful of more starts in the minor leagues before Toronto is ready to activate him from the injured list, but this was a good start. The Blue Jays could ease Ryu back by using him out of the bullpen initially, and fantasy managers shouldn't expect a ton right away.

Fri Jun 30 202321:59Hyun Jin Ryu Set To Begin Rehab Assignment
Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow) will start his minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday, July 4, in either the Florida Complex League or Single-A. Ryu's velocity has been up to 88 mph, so he has a ways to go still, but he's lost 30 pounds and apparently is in "phenomenal" shape. Barring any setbacks on his rehab assignment, he's likely a month away from returning to the Blue Jays. The 36-year-old southpaw is finally nearing a return after having Tommy John surgery, and he'll be making his 2023 debut whenever he gets into a game at the major-league level. There's no guarantee that Ryu will return to the starting rotation immediately, though, so fantasy managers in mixed leagues will probably want to take a wait-and-see approach.

Tue Jun 20 202309:19Hyun Jin Ryu Throwing A Live Bullpen Thursday
Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow) began throwing from a mound recently and is scheduled to toss a live bullpen on Thursday, according to MLB.com. The nine-year veteran has been on the shelf since June of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Before the injury, Ryu posted a 5.67 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 14.2% strikeout rate, arguably the worst production of his career, over 27 innings in 2022. Fantasy managers can't expect the 36-year-old to provide the same kind of numbers that made him a 2020 Cy Young candidate, and when he returns, hopefully near the All-Star break, he should be left on the waiver wire in most leagues.

Wed Dec 28 202218:18Hyun Jin Ryu Hopes To Return In July
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow) said he is right on schedule in his rehab from Tommy John surgery that he had in June and is targeting a return in July. He spent the last month in Korea with his family and will now continue his rehab back in the United States. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect the 35-year-old southpaw back until the second half of the 2023 season. Ryu gave up 17 earned runs on 32 hits while walking four and striking out 16 in six starts (27 innings) before needing season-ending surgery on his left elbow in 2022. He had an ERA below 3.00 in his first year in Toronto but has regressed in the last two years before ultimately succumbing to Tommy John surgery. The aging left-hander will be a shaky fantasy bet in the second half next season.

Sat Jun 18 202221:08Hyun Jin Ryu Undergoes Tommy John Surgery
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Saturday. It was a revision UCL reconstruction with a flexor tendon repair. The 35-year-old underwent the second Tommy John surgery of his career and will miss the rest of the 2022 season. The typical recovery timeline is 12-to-18 months, meaning he won't be able to return until at least the second half of the 2023 season. Ryu finishes the 2022 season with a 5.67 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 16 strikeouts, and four walks across 27 innings. The southpaw will look to make a full recovery and return at some point during the 2023 season.
