Kyle Weiland (shoulder) is doubtful to pitch this year.
Weiland underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in May and later needed treatment for an infection that developed around his surgical wound. "Given how much time he's missed, I'd be surprised if he made it back into the competition this year," said Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow. "Our focus is on just getting him healthy and getting him ready to recover in the offseason and come into spring training."

Fri Mar 30 201212:19Weiland, Lyles grab rotation spots
Kyle Weiland and Jordan Lyles are expected to be part of the Astros rotation following the release of Livan Hernandez.
Weiland has an unimpressive 8/7 K/BB ratio in 16 innings this spring but has put up a 2.25 ERA, while Lyles holds a 6.32 mark. Knowing they won't be in contention this season, the Astros have decided to go with a youth movement in the rotation, and we applaud them for it. Both Weiland and Lyles could churn out some NL-only value.

Kyle Weiland was credited with the win after throwing two scoreless innings Saturday against the Nationals.
Weiland allowed just one hit, walked none and struck out one. He appeared Triple-A bound before the Brett Myers move, but now he has a decent chance of making the Astros as a fifth starter. He'll have to outperform Jordan Lyles and Zach Duke this spring.

Wed Dec 14 201113:25Astros acquire Weiland, Lowrie from BoSox
Astros acquired RHP Kyle Weiland and INF Jed Lowrie from the Red Sox for RHP Mark Melancon.
Weiland struggled in his first taste of the big leagues this past season, but has a 3.51 ERA over parts of four seasons in the minors, averaging 8.5 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9. The 25-year-old right-hander has a chance to be a decent back-end starter if he improves his command. Thu Sep 15 201122:44Weiland only gets through three
Kyle Weiland was unable to provide the Red Sox with a lift Thursday, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks over just three innings in a loss to the Rays.
Weiland has a nice future, but he now holds a 7.58 ERA in three starts this year for the Sox and has gone beyond four innings just once. The fact that he was forced to start such an important game shows you how desperate Boston has been for pitching lately. He's unlikely to get another turn.
