Irwin signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Friday, MLB.com reports.
Irwin has been out of baseball all season, and the extensive time off will probably prevent him from emerging as a starting option for the Rangers. Instead, he'll look to rebuild his value in the minor-league ranks, most likely settling at Triple-A Round Rock, where he pitched in 2014. In 51.1 innings with Round Rock (10 starts) last season, Irwin went 5-2 with a 3.51 ERA and a 56:25 K:BB ratio.

Wed Jul 9 201400:43Phil Irwin lasts four innings in season debut
Phil Irwin gave up three runs on six hits over four innings in a season-debut loss to the Astros on Tuesday.
Irwin walked two and struck out two, and he surrendered a home run to George Springer among his six hits allowed. It was the first major league start this year for the 28-year-old, and even if he sticks around he's not likely to be worth much to fantasy teams.

Sat Mar 1 201409:03Phil Irwin still battling elbow soreness
Phil Irwin will not throw any bullpen sessions the next few days as he continues to battle elbow soreness.
While the injury isn't believed to be serious at this point, he missed a large portion of the 2013 season after undergoing ulnar nerve transposition surgery. The 26-year-old worked his way back and looked strong in the Arizona Fall League. Any setbacks this spring though could hurt his chances of cracking the Opening Day roster.
