The Mariners DFA'd Fernandez a day earlier to open up a spot on their 40-man roster. The 24-year-old missed almost the entire 2014 campaign due after requiring Tommy John surgery, making only five starts for Tacoma.

Fernandez allowed four runs over four innings of work this spring. The 22-year-old left-hander had a 3.51 ERA and 134 strikeouts over 164 innings between High-A and Double-A last season and was ranked as the organization's No. 30 prospect over the winter.
