Tue Feb 2022:29Kyle Hendricks Ramping Up After Normal Offseason
Chicago Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks is looking to build off his solid 2023 season after returning from a worrisome shoulder injury that caused him to get a late start last spring training. Hendricks looked good in a live batting practice session last Saturday and was sitting around 86-88 mph with his fastballs. The 34-year-old soft-tossing veteran didn't throw his first bullpen session last spring until Feb. 24 and didn't make his season debut until May while working back from a capsular tear in his right shoulder. Upon his return, Hendricks "felt completely normal again," and it was backed up the fact that he topped 90 mph on a fastball 14 times while seeing the highest spin rate of his career on his changeup. Hendricks will be a key starter for Chicago's rotation, but there's just not much fantasy upside due to his lack of strikeouts.

Mon Nov 6 202313:39Cubs Exercise Kyle Hendricks' 2024 Option
The Chicago Cubs exercised right-hander Kyle Hendricks' $16.5 million option for the 2024 season, according to sources. The move was expected, especially after starter Marcus Stroman opted out of his deal over the weekend. Hendricks, the team's longest-tenured player, will return next year for his 11th season. The 33-year-old is a soft-tosser and doesn't strike out many batters, but he posted a respectable 3.74 ERA (3.81 FIP) and 1.20 WHIP in 24 starts in 2023 while walking 27 and striking out 93 in 137 innings pitched for the Cubbies. Hendrick's fantasy ceiling is very low, but he'll remain a valuable real-life pitcher in the middle of Chicago's starting rotation in 2024.

Wed Aug 16 202300:48Kyle Hendricks Turns In Quality Start, No-Decision Tuesday
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks delivered a quality start but came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the White Sox. Hendricks pitched six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts. The 33-year-old has been serviceable in 16 starts this season, going 4-6 with a 4.00 ERA, a 5.95 K/9 rate, a 1.56 BB/9 rate, and almost six IP per start. While he won't strike many hitters out, Hendricks' ability to pitch deep into games makes him a worthwhile streamer in points leagues where quality starts are rewarded. His next start should be one of those opportunities against the Royals.

Thu Jul 27 202319:27Kyle Hendricks Not Expected To Be Moved At Trade Deadline
Chicago Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks is not expected to be moved at this year's trade deadline, according to sources. Hendricks has a team option for next year and will likely remain a Cub in 2024. Despite not throwing very hard and not inducing many swings and misses, Hendricks is having a fine season. He picked up his fourth win over the year against the crosstown Chicago White Sox on Tuesday by giving up three earned runs on four hits while walking one and striking out four in 6 1/3 innings to lower his season ERA to 3.45 (4.05 FIP) and his WHIP to 1.04 in 70 1/3 innings and 12 starts. Hendricks missed some time with injury along the way. Don't look now, but the 33-year-old has had quality starts in five of his last seven outings.

Tue Jun 6 202301:24Kyle Hendricks Takes The Loss On Monday
Chicago Cubs right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks took the loss on Monday when he allowed four runs on six hits to go along with four strikeouts over six innings a 5-0 loss to the San Diego Padres. On the plus side, Hendricks didn't issue a free pass but on the downside, he coughed up four runs. His big mistake was serving up a two-run homer to Gary Sanchez in the bottom of the second inning, which was more than enough to saddle him with the loss. It wasn't an overly impressive performance but it wasn't a horrible one either. The 33-year-old hurler is still searching for his first victory of the season and will carry a 4.70 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, and 12:5 K/BB ratio over 15 1/3 innings (three starts) into his next turn against the Giants in San Francisco on Saturday.

Mon Jun 5 202319:00Kyle Hendricks Looking To Build Off Solid Effort Monday
Chicago Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks is looking to build off a strong effort as he takes on the San Diego Padres Monday night on the road. In just his second start of the season, the veteran hurled five innings of one-run ball, albeit with six hits and three walks allowed against just three strikeouts. Nonetheless, the fact that effort came against one of the very best offenses in baseball in the form of the Tampa Bay Rays is certainly encouraging. The 2016 NL Cy Young winner has struggled in each of the last two seasons with ERA figures just south of 5.00 but he's been solid with a 3.86 mark in two starts this season. He'll take on a Padres offense that sits 25th with a .299 wOBA against right-handed pitching this season.

Thu May 25 202301:14Kyle Hendricks To Come Off Injured List And Start Thursday
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) is scheduled to come off the injured list and start against the New York Mets on Thursday, manager David Ross announced after Wednesday's contest. Right-hander Jameson Taillon will be pushed back to Saturday in a better matchup against the Cincinnati Reds. Hendricks, 33, will be making his 2023 debut after recovering from a serious right-shoulder sprain that he suffered in July of last year. The soft-tossing veteran hurler had a 5.75 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, six walks and 20 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings over five minor-league rehab starts for Triple-A Iowa. Hendricks has a place in Chicago's rotation now that he's healthy, but the fact that he misses very few bats makes him a low-upside fantasy option at this point in his career.

Tue May 9 202323:21Kyle Hendricks Sharp In Tuesday's Rehab Start
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) picked up a win on Tuesday in his latest minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Iowa. The veteran right-hander allowed no runs on just two hits while walking none and striking out four in his five innings of work. It was a nice change after Hendricks allowed 10 earned runs on eight hits (one homer) while walking four and striking out six in his first two rehab outings at Iowa. There's a chance that the 33-year-old's next start could be with the Cubs in what would be his 2023 season debut. Hendricks will have a rotation spot waiting for him in Chicago, but the soft-tosser doesn't strike out enough batters to move the needle all that much in fantasy.

Fri May 5 202312:31Kyle Hendricks To Throw Bullpen Saturday
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session in Chicago on Saturday. Hendricks came out of his second minor-league rehab outing with Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday feeling good despite giving up four runs on two hits while walking three in 2 2/3 innings. The 33-year-old right-hander surrendered six earned runs in just 1 2/3 frames in his first rehab start last week, so the results haven't been there, but Hendricks hasn't had any physical setbacks. Hendricks will make at least one more rehab start before the team considers adding him to their starting rotation in the big leagues. The veteran hurler hasn't pitched in the majors since last July due to a capsule tear in his right shoulder, so fantasy managers should be very wary.

Mon May 1 202314:28Kyle Hendricks To Make Another Rehab Start Tuesday
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) is scheduled for another minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. Hendricks threw 54 pitches in his first rehab start on April 27, which was his first affiliated game since July 5 of last year. He was unsurprisingly rusty, allowing six runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three in 1 2/3 innings for Iowa. The 33-year-old veteran is attempting to return from a capsular tear in his right shoulder and has been working on an altered arm path in his delivery with the goal of avoiding a similar injury in the future. While Hendricks will eventually be an option for Chicago's rotation this month, he lacks substantial fantasy upside at this point in his career.

Fri Apr 28 202308:59Kyle Hendricks Completes First Rehab Start Thursday
Chicago Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) pitched in his first rehab game on Thursday with Triple-A Iowa. He threw 54 pitches, allowing six runs while walking one and striking out three over 1.2 innings. Hendricks is trying to return from a capsular tear in his right shoulder that ended his 2022 campaign in July. The 33-year-old will likely need at least one more rehab start before rejoining the Cubs, with the club targeting mid-May if there are no setbacks. Fantasy managers can't expect too much production from Hendricks, especially in his first few starts of 2023. He's never been a strikeout pitcher, with a career 20.1% strikeout rate, and struggled last season to the tune of a 4.80 ERA and 4.82 FIP with four victories over 16 starts.

Tue Apr 25 202314:17Kyle Hendricks To Start Rehab Assignment Thursday
Chicago Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) will fly to Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday and will make his first minor-league rehab start on Thursday. Barring setbacks along the way, Hendricks will be ready to return to the Cubs starting rotation by the middle of May. He last pitched in July of 2022 before suffering a capsular tear in his right shoulder. Chicago won't rush the 33-year-old veteran back, but Hendricks will have a spot in the rotation when he's healthy. Coming off a serious injury and without much swing-and-miss stuff, fantasy managers shouldn't be too excited about Hendricks' impending return to the big leagues.

Fri Apr 21 202308:23Kyle Hendricks Close To A Return
Chicago Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) is making good progress as he tries to return to the team after a right shoulder issue that he suffered last July, and he hasn't pitched in a big league game since. The 33-year-old is expected to throw in a simulated game on Saturday before beginning a rehab assignment, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports. If everything goes as planned, he should be back in the rotation at some point in May. Hendricks has been a solid arm for a while now but struggled in 2022. The veteran posted a 4.80 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with 66 strikeouts and 24 walks over 16 starts and 84.1 innings. When he's healthy, fantasy managers can only hope for decent ratios and a handful of wins, as the strikeouts won't be there.

Tue Apr 11 202318:47Kyle Hendricks To Throw On Wednesday
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) is scheduled to throw two innings of batting practice sessions on Wednesday. The right-hander continues to work his way back from a torn capsule in his right shoulder. The expectation is that he'll be sent out for a rehab assignment, assuming the batting practice session goes well. Although, the team might want Hendricks to throw a few sessions before having him go out to the minors. Regardless, it's likely that Hendricks doesn't return to the Cubs rotation until early May.

Sun Apr 9 202314:27Kyle Hendricks To Throw Bullpen Monday
Chicago Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) threw live batting practice Friday and will now throw a bullpen on Monday. There is still no timetable for his return, but he's inching ever closer. He won't be helpful in many leagues when he does return but does have some value in NL-Only or deep leagues.

Wed Mar 22 202318:15Kyle Hendricks Has Three Bullpen Sessions Lined Up
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) will throw three additional bullpens before progressing to live batting practice. Hendricks threw a 30-pitch session on March 17 and said he now feels like he's in Spring Training mode instead of rehab mode. He isn't someone to target in your drafts right now and will probably only be a deep-league option when he returns.

Sat Mar 11 202320:29Kyle Hendricks Throws Successful Bullpen Session
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) was able to throw a successful 30-pitch bullpen session on Friday. The right-hander said he felt good afterwards, which is good news. The organization plans to have Hendricks throw multiple bullpen sessions before having him face live hitters. The Cubs are hopeful that Hendricks is going to be ready around early May. The 33-year-old should carry fantasy value once healthy, but is probably more of a deep league option.

Mon Mar 6 202315:22Kyle Hendricks Throws First Bullpen Session
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) threw his first bullpen session on Monday since getting injured last July. Hendricks was able to air it out on Monday and said afterwards that he was feeling great. Despite the positive session, he is about a month behind and is expected to open the year on the injured list. The 33-year-old right-hander isn't expected to make any Cactus League starts in spring training. Barring any setbacks, Hendricks seems likely to miss around the first month of the 2023 regular season. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues should leave him to the waiver wire to begin the year.

Fri Feb 24 202315:40Kyle Hendricks Feels Good After Throwing Friday
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) felt good on Friday after throwing a 10-pitch, touch-and-feel bullpen session for the first time throwing off a mound since July 5 of last year. Hendricks expects to throw two more touch-and-feel bullpens before a series of full bullpen sessions. "I can be patient when I need to be so I just have to lock in on the process," Hendricks said. The 33-year-old veteran right-hander suffered a capsular tear in his right shoulder last year and is expected to open the 2023 season on the injured list. Along with a drop in his numbers the last two seasons, fantasy managers should be avoiding Hendricks in mixed-league formats this year.

Sat Feb 18 202311:32Kyle Hendricks To Throw Next Friday
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) said he will throw a touch-and-feel bullpen session next Friday, which will be his first time off a mound since his injury. He said he will likely need three to four of those bullpens and estimates he's roughly a month behind his normal schedule. It's why the Cubs expect him to miss the start of the regular season. The 33-year-old right-hander was shut down last August with a capsular tear in his right shoulder. The soft-tosser hasn't been very good the last two seasons and has never been a strikeout guy for fantasy managers. Hendricks will come at a discount price in fantasy drafts in 2023, but those in shallow mixed leagues can probably avoid him for now.
