Mon Mar 408:06Javier Baez Hitless In Spring
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez went 0-for-3 versus the New York Yankees on Sunday. Baez is now hitless in his first 11 at-bats with no walks in the Grapefruit League. Speaking earlier in the offseason, Baez noted that he strengthened his conditioning after dealing with back and core injuries in his first two seasons for the Tigers. The 31-year-old is certain to get plenty of playing time in Detroit this year, but much of that can be due to the six-year, $140 million deal that he signed, in which he is in year three of. Due to past success, Baez is always worth keeping an eye on, but outside of deeper leagues, the former MVP candidate can remain nothing more than a late-round dart throw or watch-list candidate.

Fri Feb 1613:10Javier Baez Has Played Through Back, Core Issues
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez (back, core) said he has battled through lower-back and core issues the last two years. However, with a new training routine, he said he feels strong and more like himself heading into the 2024 season. Baez didn't have any offseason surgery but just focused on strengthening those areas. It would help explain why the 31-year-old has tailed off as a hitter in his first two years in Detroit. He has slashed a pathetic .230/.273/.361 with 26 home runs, 126 RBI, 21 stolen bases and 272 strikeouts in 1,065 at-bats in his time with the Tigers and is currently outside RotoBaller's top-30 shortstop rankings. He's been a disaster since signing a six-year, $140 million, and time will only tell if better health will lead to better results.

Tue Nov 7 202314:47Javier Baez Opts In To Final Four Years Of His Contract
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez has opted in to the final four years and $98 million remaining on his contract with the club. The decision comes as no surprise as the veteran has struggled mightily at the plate with the Tigers since inking his six-year, $144 million deal with the club prior to the 2022 season. Baez hit just .238 with 17 home runs, nine stolen bases, and a .671 OPS in his first season in Detroit before cratering to a .222 average with nine HR, 12 SB, and a .592 OPS in the 2023 season. His 61 wRC+ in 2023 ranked 132nd of 133 qualified hitters, just one point ahead of Tim Anderson's 60 wRC+. Despite elite work with the glove at shortstop, the Tigers are now likely to give Baez nearly everyday reps regardless of his offensive production while he is on the books through the 2027 season.

Fri Sep 22 202318:58Javier Baez Returns On Friday
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez (back) has returned to the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Oakland Athletics. The 30-year-old is back after missing each of the last three games due to a lower back issue. Baez will cover shortstop and bat seventh versus left-hander Ken Waldichuk on Friday. This season, Baez is slashing .217/.265/.318 with nine home runs and 58 RBI in 130 games. Fantasy managers who have Baez rostered can get him back in their lineups for Friday.

Tue Sep 19 202322:43Javier Baez Scratched With Back Tightness
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez (back) was scratched from Tuesday's lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers with lower-back tightness. Zack Short replaced him at shortstop. Until we know more on Baez's condition, consider him day-to-day heading into Wednesday's contest. The 30-year-old Puerto Rican has been a major disappointment in his second season in Detroit, hitting .217/.265/.318 with only nine home runs, 14 doubles, four triples, 58 RBI, 12 stolen bases and 56 runs scored in 130 games (525 plate appearances). He has only eight hits in 40 at-bats (.200) so far in 12 games (11 starts) in September with a homer, double, four RBI, 11 K's, a stolen base and three runs scored. In another lost season for Detroit, they could opt to shut Baez down with just under two weeks remaining on the schedule.

Sat Sep 9 202316:27Javier Baez To Sit Out On Saturday
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez is out of Saturday's starting lineup versus the Chicago White Sox. The 30-year-old has seen quite a lot of the bench lately, which shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Baez is slashing .221/.267/.319 with eight home runs and 54 RBI in 123 games this season. The Tigers aren't in the playoff picture, so they might as well give younger players a chance to see what they can do. Zack Short will bat ninth and play shortstop versus right-hander Jose Urena on Saturday. Fantasy managers who are rostering Baez might want to look elsewhere for help. It doesn't seem like the Tigers are too interested in giving Baez everyday at-bats right now.

Sat Sep 2 202316:20Javier Baez Returns To The Lineup On Saturday
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez is back in Saturday's starting lineup versus the Chicago White Sox. The right-handed slugger is back in the lineup after missing each of the last three games. It doesn't appear that Baez is dealing with an injury, so possibly his absence is due to his struggles at the plate. The Tigers aren't in the playoff picture, so maybe they want to give at-bats to younger players as they look towards the 2024 season. On Saturday, Baez will bat eighth and cover shortstop versus right-hander Mike Clevinger. Fantasy managers who have Baez rostered can go ahead and get him back in their lineups.

Fri Sep 1 202319:14Javier Baez Taking Another Day Off
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez (soreness) is out of the starting lineup yet again on Friday against the Chicago White Sox. Baez will miss a third straight game due to general soreness. Zack Short will make another start at shortstop for Detroit and bat ninth against White Sox right-hander Touki Toussaint. It's been another frustrating season for Baez, as he's hitting just .219/.262/.319 with eight home runs, 54 RBI, 11 stolen bases and 53 runs scored in 448 at-bats. The free-swinging 30-year-old finished the month of August going 10-for-57 (.175) with a homer, a double, six RBI, 19 strikeouts, one stolen base and seven runs scored in 17 games (16 starts). DFS gamers can find better sleepers at short than Short, who is hitting .222 (42-for-189) with six homers and 29 RBI this year.

Thu Aug 31 202312:17Javier Baez Out Again
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez will miss his second straight game on Thursday against the visiting New York Yankees. "He's beat up a little bit and not feeling 100%," manager A.J. Hinch said. Baez is apparently battling general soreness late in the season and needs another day to rest. Zack Short will start at short and hit in the eight-hole against Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt. Baez continues to flounder at the plate in his second season in Detroit, and he'll finish the month of August hitting a lowly .175 (10-for-57) with a home run, a double, six RBI, 19 strikeouts, a stolen base and seven runs scored in 17 games (16 starts).

Fri Aug 25 202316:06Javier Baez Returns To Friday's Lineup
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez (illness) has returned to the starting lineup on Friday against the visiting Houston Astros and left-hander Framber Valdez, playing shortstop and batting eighth in the order. Baez is feeling better after sitting out the team's last two games. Not much has gone right for the free-swinging infielder in 2023. He's gone 8-for-39 (.205) with a home run, a double, five RBI, 13 strikeouts, one stolen base and six runs scored in 12 games (11 starts) so far in the month of August. The 30-year-old Puerto Rican still swings and misses too much and doesn't get on base enough (.266 on-base percentage) at a premium position in fantasy. Baez has just eight home runs while driving in 53 and stealing 11 bases in his second season in Detroit.

Tue Aug 22 202318:30Javier Baez Scratched On Tuesday
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez (illness) has been scratched from Tuesday's starting lineup against the Chicago Cubs. The 30-year-old is feeling under the weather, so the team will hold him out of Tuesday's contest. The expectation is that this will be a one-game absence, but fantasy managers will have to check back on Wednesday. In his absence, Zack Short will cover shortstop, while Zach McKinstry moves over to third base versus left-hander Drew Smyly. Neither player is expected to have much fantasy value against Smyly on Tuesday.

Fri Aug 18 202316:50Javier Baez Expected To Return For Game 2 Of Doubleheader
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez is set to rejoin the team and should be activated from the bereavement list for Game 2 of Friday's doubleheader against the Cleveland Guardians. Baez should be back at shortstop after going on the bereavement list last Saturday, and he'll be facing Guardians right-hander Xzavion Curry. Fantasy managers have gotten very little from the free-swinging Baez in 2023, and especially in August, as he's gone just 4-for-25 (.160) with no home runs, two RBI, 11 strikeouts and four runs scored in eight games (seven starts). The 30-year-old Puerto Rican slugger has a weak .221 average (92-for-416) and .262 on-base percentage on the year with only seven homers, 50 RBI, 50 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.

Thu Aug 17 202320:21Javier Baez Expected To Return Friday
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez is expected to return from the bereavement list on Friday in time for the team's doubleheader against the Cleveland Guardians. Baez has been on the bereavement list since last Saturday due to the death of his grandmother, but he'll return this weekend. The 30-year-old Puerto Rican free-swinger hasn't been very good at a premium position in fantasy in his second year in Detroit. He'll return on Friday to a .221/.262/.320 slash line with only seven long balls, 12 doubles, four triples, 50 RBI, 10 stolen bases and 50 runs scored in his 444 trips to the plate over 109 games. So far in August, he's recorded only four hits in 25 at-bats (.160) with no homers, two RBI, 11 strikeouts and four runs scored in eight games (seven starts).

Thu Aug 17 202317:14Javier Baez Still Away Thursday
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez remains away from the team on Thursday as the Tigers take on the Cleveland Guardians. Zack Short is starting at shortstop and is batting ninth against Guardians right-hander Xzavion Curry. Baez remains on the bereavement list after being placed on it last Saturday due to his grandmother's death. The 30-year-old should be back by at least this Saturday against the Guardians. Baez continues to disappoint in his second season with the Tigers, hitting .221/.262/.320 with only seven home runs, 12 doubles, four triples, 50 RBI, 10 stolen bases and 50 runs scored in 444 plate appearances over 109 games. He's been even worse since the All-Star break, going 17-for-82 (.207) with a homer, double, triple, six RBI, 22 strikeouts, four steals and 15 runs scored in 24 games (22 starts).

Sat Aug 12 202321:29Javier Baez Set To Go On Bereavement List
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez (knee) is leaving the team to head to Puerto Rico for his grandfather's funeral. Baez will be placed on the bereavement list, and the Tigers will announce a corresponding move on Sunday. The 30-year-old was scratched from Saturday's game against the Red Sox with a sore knee. Baez is slashing .221/.262/.320 with seven home runs, 50 RBI, 50 runs, and 10 stolen bases over 443 plate appearances in 2023. Zach McKinstry will handle shortstop duties while Baez is away, but it's unclear who will join the big-league roster in Sunday's corresponding move.

Tue Aug 8 202316:18Javier Baez Back In Action Against Twins
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez (personal) is back at shortstop and is hitting sixth in the batting order on Tuesday against the visiting Minnesota Twins and right-hander Sonny Gray. Baez was scratched from Saturday's lineup due to a death in the family and is just now returning on Tuesday. The 30-year-old Puerto Rican slugger has been mostly a disappointment in 2023 in his second season in the Motor City, slashing .223/.262/.325 with seven home runs, 12 doubles, four triples, 49 RBI, 10 stolen bases and 48 runs scored in 429 plate appearances over 105 games played. Since July 20 over 15 games (13 starts), Baez is hitting just .200 (10-for-50) with no homers, a triple, three RBI, one stolen base and 10 runs scored.

Sun Aug 6 202313:07Javier Baez Absent From The Lineup For Series Finale
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez is not in the starting lineup for the series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. Baez is dealing with a death in his family and remains out of the lineup for the Tigers. The next logical step for Baez would be to be placed on the bereavement list, which would keep him out for another handful of games. Zach McKinstry is starting at shortstop and batting leadoff against Tampa starter Erasmo Ramirez in Baez's absence.

Sat Aug 5 202312:23Javier Baez Could Go On Bereavement List
Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez was scratched from Saturday's starting lineup against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays due to a death in the family. It's possible that he will be placed on the bereavement list by the Tigers, which would cause him to miss another two to three days. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect the 30-year-old infielder to play at all for the rest of the weekend series against the Rays. With Baez out on Saturday, Zack Short is manning the 6 and is hitting eighth against Rays right-hander Aaron Civale. Baez, a two-time All-Star back with the Chicago Cubs in 2018 and 2019, continues to disappoint in 2023 and only has seven home runs and 10 stolen bases while hitting .224 (90-for-402) with a weak .262 on-base percentage.

Sat Aug 5 202312:03Javier Baez Scratched From Saturday's Lineup
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez has been scratched from Saturday's starting lineup against the Tampa Bay Rays. It's unclear why Baez was scratched, so check back later for more information. With Baez out, Zack Short will start at shortstop for the Tigers and hit eighth against Rays right-hander Aaron Civale. Although he does have double-digit stolen bases (10), Baez has mostly been a disappointment otherwise for fantasy managers in his second season in the Motor City. In his 104 games over 428 plate appearances, he's hitting just .224/.262/.326 with seven home runs, 12 doubles, four triples, 49 RBI and 48 runs scored. The free-swinging Puerto Rican has gone just 7-for-38 (.184) with no home runs, three RBI, a stolen base and nine runs scored in his last 11 games since July 23.

Tue Jul 25 202314:50Javier Baez Back In The Starting Lineup Tuesday
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez is back in the starting lineup for Tuesday night's series opener versus Los Angeles Angels right-hander Griffin Canning. Baez didn't start Monday afternoon's contest against the Giants but struck out in a pinch-hitting appearance. It's been a disastrous season at the plate for the veteran as Baez is hitting just .226 with seven homers, nine stolen bases, and a .599 OPS across 95 contests. Additionally, Baez's .274 xwOBA isn't much higher than his .261 wOBA while his 64 wRC+ ranks 143rd of 145 qualified big-league hitters. Of course, he has played himself completely off the fantasy radar while he will look to bounce back Tuesday night out of the six-hole in Detroit.
