Tue Jul 26 201612:33Blue Jays set to acquire Padres OF Upton
Toronto agreed to a trade for San Diego Padres outfielder Melvin Upton Jr., who would give the Blue Jays another big bat to squeeze into a crowded lineup. According to MLB Network, Upton's salary will be largely absorbed by the Padres, leaving only $5 million total for the remainder of this season and next on the Blue Jays' tab.Upton Jr. is having a bounce-back season with the Padres with 16 home runs, 45 RBIs and a team-leading 20 stolen bases. According to multiple reports, the Blue Jays will trade a minor league outfielder to San Diego. The Blue Jays are set in left field with All-Star Michael Saunders and right field with Jose Bautista, but acquiring Upton creates options for rotating players in the designated hitter role and playing Edwin Encarnacion at first base. The Padres owed Upton $16.45 million in 2017 but are on a run of unloading hefty contracts, a shift that began in the offseason when they traded closer Craig Kimbrel to the Boston Red Sox and included in-season deals involving right-hander James Shields and closer Drew Pomeranz.Entering Tuesday, the Blue Jays trailed the Orioles by three games in the American League East.

Upton went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored in a 6-2 loss to the Dodgers on Friday.
Upton is considered a huge bust by many, but his numbers have been quietly good as of late. In 197 at-bats this season, Upton has a .259 average with 20 extra-base hits and eight steals. Those numbers across a full season would be comparable to his Tampa Bay numbers and it should garner him some interest in the offseason for a starting role.

Upton is out of the lineup Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
After he was handed three consecutive starts last week, Upton has since seen his at-bats fall by the way side, as he'll sit out for the sixth time in seven games. Travis Jankowski now looks like the Padres' primary center fielder, with Upton typically entering the lineup only against lefties.

Upton will receive the start in center field for a third straight game Saturday against the Rockies.
On the heels of a three-hit game Friday, Upton will earn another nod in center field, with rookie Travis Jankowski losing out on at-bats as a result. Upton has performed better with San Diego this season than he did with Atlanta the last two campaigns, but his still-meager .250/.316/.426 line and declining speed still make his $15 million annual salary a relative albatross.

Upton went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored in a 7-4 loss to Colorado on Friday.
Upton made quick work today, as he saw just five pitches in his four at-bats. Since the beginning of July, Upton has put together some formidable numbers. In fact, Upton's batting around .280 with an OPS above .800 since July 8. He may not be completely dead as most fantasy owners expected and he's a candidate to have a resurgence next year, as he's shown All-Star potential in years past.

Upton hit his fourth and fifth home runs of the season and knocked in five runs as part of a 3-for-4 game in Tuesday's blowout of Atlanta.
Upton is hitting a robust .297/.342/.527 in his past 27 games (18 starts) and has raised his OPS from .510 to .723 in that span. His .242/.304/.419 batting line for the season plays well for a batter who calls PETCO Park home. San Diego's gamble on the older Upton brother seems to be paying off. Upton has taken just 124 at-bats this season, so it wouldn't be surprising if he got big playing time the rest of the season to see if his improvement will stick.

Upton will start in center field and bat seventh Tuesday against the Braves.
He replaced Will Venable, who was traded to the Rangers (and scratched) not long after the initial lineup was posted. Upton has struggled throughout the season (.225/.290/.358) but now appears in line to take on a significant role in center field, at least until Wil Myers (wrist) is ready to go.

Upton is out of the lineup Sunday against the Phillies.
Upton has made three consecutive starts in center field, but the Padres will turn to Will Venable in that role for the Sunday afternoon contest. The 30-year-old Upton is off to a strong start to August, collecting a base hit in each all but one game this month and slashing .286/.348/.476 over 21 at-bats.

Upton went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a 10-1 loss to the Brewers on Thursday.
Upton had a nightmare season last year, but has been better this season, batting .240 with three homers and six steals in 61 games. If he could find a more consistent role, his fantasy value would rise to deep-league relevancy with his ability to provide in counting categories.

Upton will bat leadoff Saturday against the Rangers.
Upton batted ninth on Friday but will move into the leadoff spot Saturday against righty Colby Lewis. He has had moderate success against righties this season (.267 BA) but is hitless in seven career at-bats against Lewis.

Upton went 1-for-4 with his first homer of the year -- a two-run shot -- and a walk out of the leadoff spot Sunday in Arizona.
The homer came in ninth-inning garbage time, but hey, they all count. It's hard to expect much from Upton in a part-time role, but he could provide the occasional homer and some steals when he makes it into the lineup. Of course, he's a batting-average vampire for fantasy purposes.
Wed Jun 17 201517:30Upton not in lineup for Wednesday's game against A's
Upton is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the A's.
The 30-year-old has been in the lineup the last two times the Padres have faced lefty starters -- he even led off Tuesday -- but Upton's made just one start against a right-hander since returning from the DL. Look for that trend to continue.
Wed Jun 10 201515:59Upton in lineup Wednesday against Braves
Upton is in the lineup Wednesday against the Braves.
Upton was activated from the DL on Monday, but he was no included in Tuesday's lineup, though he did log an at-bat as a pinch hitter. He'll take over in center field Wednesday as Matt Kemp gets the day off.

Upton (foot) was officially activated from the disabled list Monday.
Upton's foot injury cost him the first two months of the season, but he'll finally rejoin the club Monday. He won't start in the contest, but the veteran outfielder figures to see a fair share of starts in center field until Wil Myers returns from the disabled list. The Padres optioned Abraham Almonte to Triple-A El Paso to make room for Upton on the 25-man roster.

Upton (foot) will be reinstated from the disabled list prior to Monday's series opener against the Braves, MLB.com's Corey Brock reports.
Upton hasn't been available to the Padres all season, but it seems fitting that he'll make his 2015 debut against his former team. He hasn't been particularly impressive in his rehab outings, however, and will likely occupy a reserve outfield role upon returning.
Sun Jun 7 201510:52Melvin Upton Jr: (Foot) Will Debut Monday
San Diego Padres outfielder Melvin Upton, Jr. will be activated from the disabled list Monday after recovering from a foot injury, according to MLB.com.
San Diego Padres outfielder Melvin Upton, Jr. will be activated from the disabled list Monday after recovering from a foot injury, according to MLB.com. Upton has yet to play this season due to the injury, but he is likely to make his debut Monday against the Atlanta Braves, who traded him to San Diego this past offseason. He has not been particularly impressive during his rehab outings, and he is only expected to serve as a reserve outfielder upon returning. Upton, whose brother Justin also plays for the Padres, signed a five-year, $75.25 million contract with the Braves back in November 2012 but failed to live up to the expectations of the large contract, bottoming out in 2013 when he hit just .184 with nine home runs and 12 stolen bases in 126 games. He improved slightly last season, hitting .208 with 12 home runs and 20 stolen bases, but the Braves had no interest in keeping him around for three more seasons, which prompted the trade.

Upton (foot) is 11-for-41 (.268) with two doubles, five RBI, and three stolen bases through 11 rehab games with Triple-A El Paso.
Upton owns just a .650 OPS with El Paso, but he has not experienced any setbacks since first taking the field May 18, and was able to play three days in a row this week for the first time since last September. He is nearing the maximum of 20 days that a non-pitcher can spend in the minors during a rehab assignment, so the Padres will be forced to make a decision on whether or not to activate him in the next few days.

Upton (foot) will actually begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A El Paso on Monday, Corey Brock of MLB.com reports.
Upton was expected to begin his rehab assignment this weekend, but it looks like that will be pushed back instead. It shouldn't change his return date much, but it could push it back a day or two.

Upton (foot) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A El Paso this weekend, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Upton has been playing at extended spring training, and he could spend quite a bit of time with Triple-A El Paso. The most recent estimate has him returning in early June, at which point he'll likely serve as the Padres' fourth or fifth outfielder.

Upton (foot) will serve as the DH in an extended spring training game Monday, and plans to play in the field Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union Tribune reports.
Upton will continue his rehab in extended spring before progressing to the minors, and likely won't see big league action until early-June. Due to a crowded outfield in San Diego, Upton will probably see sporadic playing time, at best, upon his return.
