Toronto agreed to a trade for San Diego Padres outfielder Melvin Upton Jr., who would give the Blue Jays another big bat to squeeze into a crowded lineup. He may not be completely dead as most fantasy owners expected and he's a candidate to have a resurgence next year, as he's shown All-Star potential in years past.

Upton is hitting a robust .297/.342/.527 in his past 27 games (18 starts) and has raised his OPS from .510 to .723 in that span. His .242/.304/.419 batting line for the season plays well for a batter who calls PETCO Park home. San Diego's gamble on the older Upton brother seems to be paying off. Upton has taken just 124 at-bats this season, so it wouldn't be surprising if he got big playing time the rest of the season to see if his improvement will stick.

Upton had a nightmare season last year, but has been better this season, batting .240 with three homers and six steals in 61 games. If he could find a more consistent role, his fantasy value would rise to deep-league relevancy with his ability to provide in counting categories.

The homer came in ninth-inning garbage time, but hey, they all count. It's hard to expect much from Upton in a part-time role, but he could provide the occasional homer and some steals when he makes it into the lineup. Of course, he's a batting-average vampire for fantasy purposes.

Upton is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the A's.

The 30-year-old has been in the lineup the last two times the Padres have faced lefty starters -- he even led off Tuesday -- but Upton's made just one start against a right-hander since returning from the DL. Look for that trend to continue.
