Free-agent infielder Yolmer Sanchez signed a minor-league deal with the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. Sanchez, a 30-year-old switch-hitting infielder, played in just 17 major-league games in 2022 with the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets and hit a combined .108/.214/.108 with a .322 OPS, no home runs, two RBI and one run scored in 44 plate appearances. He spent all of the 2021 season with the Braves' Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett and is likely to begin the 2023 season back there. Sanchez spent the first seven seasons of his big-league career with the Chicago White Sox, and he has a .243/.299/.355 career slash line with a .654 OPS, 32 home runs, 217 RBI, 253 runs scored and 30 stolen bases in eight seasons in the majors. He'll serve as infield depth for Atlanta.

The Boston Red Sox signed infielder Yolmer Sanchez, catcher Roldani Baldwin and first baseman Roberto Ramos to minor league deals with invites to spring training on Wednesday. Sanchez, 29, is the most intriguing of the trio. He has a solid glove but hasn't been much of a threat at the plate in his career. He didn't play at all in the majors in 2021 and played in only 11 games for the White Sox in 2020 and profiles as a long-term Triple-A depth guy for Boston or elsewhere. In seven major league seasons for the Chicago White Sox, Sanchez has slashed .245/.300/.360 with 32 home runs, 215 RBI, 30 stolen bases and 252 runs scored in 657 games played.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have brought back relievers Carl Edwards Jr. and Jesse Biddle and signed former Gold Glove-winning infielder Yolmer Sanchez to minor league contracts. Edwards, who had success with the Chicago Cubs before injuries derailed his career, was with the Braves in spring training. The 29-year-old right-hander opted out of his minor-league contract after being told he would not be on the opening day roster. Apparently rebuffed in his bid to return to the majors with another team, Edwards decided to rejoin the Braves and try to work his way back through the minor leagues. Sanchez won a Gold Glove as a second baseman for the Chicago White Sox in 2019, when he hit .252 with two homers and 43 RBIs in 149 games. But the 28-year-old played only 11 games for the White Sox during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and was cut by two other teams. The 29-year-old Biddle is a former first-round draft pick by Philadelphia who made it to the big leagues with the Braves' NL East-winning team in 2018. The left-hander had some effective performances out of the bullpen, going 6-1 with one save and a 3.11 ERA in 60 games, but struggled with his control. Biddle got off to a sluggish start the following year and was dealt to Seattle. CHICAGO (AP) — Major League Baseball suspended Chicago White Sox reliever Jimmy Cordero for three games Saturday and fined him an undisclosed amount for hitting the Cubs' Willson Contreras with a pitch. Manager Rick Renteria was suspended for one game, and he and pitching coach Don Cooper were also fined. Renteria, who served his suspension on Saturday, expected Cordero to appeal his punishment. “They did what they had to do,” Renteria said. “They have a protocol that they instituted this year. They're trying to stay consistent and follow it, so just abide by it.” Cordero, Renteria and Cooper were ejected from Friday's 10-0 loss by plate umpire Dan Bellino after Cordero hit Contreras with a pitch in the seventh inning. Cordero said after the game it was unintentional and he simply threw a bad pitch. Contreras hit a three-run shot off Dylan Cease in the third, then exited the batter’s box with sky-high bat flip. He also greeted White Sox utilityman Yolmer Sanchez, who pitched the ninth, with a solo shot for his eighth career multihomer game.
