Sun Oct 4 202019:23No days off puts stress on pitchers in Division Series, LCS
NEW YORK (AP) — Postseason games come at an unprecedented pace starting Monday in this year of the pandemic. Teams could play the Division Series over five straight days, take a single day off and then contest the League Championship Series on seven consecutive days. That could could stress closers such as Aroldis Chapman, Liam Hendriks and Kenley Jansen, and starters like Gerrit Cole and Walker Buehler. “I’m old school, I guess, but it’s all about winning. And if they needed me, I wanted them to put me in there, ” said Darold Knowles, who helped Oakland win the 1973 title by becoming the first to pitch in all seven World Series games. “I think that’s the way everybody feels now, but they’re so afraid they’re going to hurt somebody. And I understand that. I think it’s a little bit overdone.” No one has pitched in games for five straight days since Shawn Tolleson for Texas from Sept. 29 to Oct. 3, 2015, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Thu Jun 2 201611:35Bullpen is Rangers lone blemish
CLEVELAND -- If there's been a blemish on the Texas Rangers' rise to the top of the AL West, it's been their bullpen. Entering play Wednesday, the Rangers' bullpen had a record of 9-11 and a 5.20 ERA, the highest bullpen ERA in the American League by almost half a run. That shaky bullpen is a big reason why the Rangers have struggled late in games. Texas is 1-5 in extra innings, the most extra inning losses in the American League. The Rangers are also 2-9 in games decided in the final at bat, and 1-7 in walk-off games. All of those ugly numbers were in evidence Wednesday night when the Rangers lost 5-4 to Cleveland, on a walk-off single by the Indians in the bottom of the 11th inning. The Rangers are a formidable offensive team, ranking third in the league in hitting and third in runs scored. They are second in the league in fielding percentage, and their starting rotation has the best record (22-10) and best ERA (3.38) of any rotation in the league. So the only fly in the ointment, moving forward, is the bullpen. The bizarre nature of the Texas bullpen is best reflected by the fact that the Rangers lead the league in saves, but also have the highest bullpen ERA in the league. Shawn Tolleson, currently on the Family Medical Emergency List, is 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA, yet leads the team in saves with 11.The challenge for manager Jeff Banister and his staff, obviously, is to sort out his bullpen and find some dependable, productive relievers, especially late in games.

RHP Shawn Tolleson was put on the family medical emergency list Friday and will not be active for three to seven days. Tolleson is going to take the time to be with his ailing father, who has been diagnosed with colon cancer and lymphoma over the last year. "He's just been at home, not a lot of energy, and spent about a week in the emergency room."
Wed May 18 201616:53Rangers turn to Dyson over Tolleson as closer
Sam Dyson is replacing Shawn Tolleson as the closer for the Texas Rangers.Rangers manager Jeff Banister announced the move before Wednesday's game against the Oakland Athletics.Tolleson shared the American League in saves with 11 with Oakland's Ryan Madson and Seattle's Cishek but blew a save opportunity for the fourth time on Tuesday night, giving up Khris Davis' grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning."Shawn will still pitch, just in different situations," Banister said. "You look at his body of work and he's been efficient, effective and sits atop the AL in saves. This is a tough stretch for him."In Tolleson's last two outings, he has two blown saves, adding to his recent struggles. He has converted only two saves in his last five chances."This is not unlike a position player who is struggling," Banister said. "It gives him an opportunity to exhale a little bit."Dyson is no stranger to closing games, having saved two of the Rangers' last three wins. He is tied for second in the AL with 10 saves this year and has a 1.43 ERA since coming over from the Miami Marlins last year."Sam has been relegated to one-inning stints," Banister said. "When you take all the factors, it points to Dyson to give the opportunity to close."The Rangers have leaned heavily on their relief staff this season, leading the AL in bullpen decisions. They're also tops in the majors with six walk-off losses.

Just didn't execute it, missed my spot, kind of left it over the middle of the plate and he put a good swing on it. "

Tolleson struck out two batters over a scoreless frame Saturday night, notching his 29th save in a 2-1 victory over the Angels.
Tolleson has developed into one of the league's more reliable closers, performing admirably after Neftali Feliz washed out of the role in May. Having gone 29-for-32 in save opportunities, Tolleson has used a 9.82 K/9 and 3.34 FIP to cement his role in the ninth inning.
