ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers right-hander Shawn Tolleson has retired after a setback in the former closer's attempted comeback from Tommy John surgery.Tolleson made the announcement Wednesday, three days before his 31st birthday. He strained his right flexor tendon during a throwing session last week.He made the last of his 215 major league appearances with the Rangers on July 27, 2016. He missed the rest of that season with back issues before signing with Tampa Bay as a free agent. Elbow soreness during spring training led to ligament reconstruction surgery in May 2017, and he spent all of last year rehabbing after returning to Texas on a minor league deal.Tolleson pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2012-13) and Texas (2014-16). RHP Shawn Tolleson was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock and placed on the 60-day disabled list in order to accommodate LHP Derek Holland, Tuesday's starter, on the roster. Tolleson was placed on Round Rock's disabled list Aug. 12 with a lower back sprain. He is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the season. Tolleson was 2-2 with a 7.68 ERA and 11 saves in 37 games with Texas. He allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings with one save in four appearances for the Express prior to his injury.

Tolleson is going to take the time to be with his ailing father, who has been diagnosed with colon cancer and lymphoma over the last year. "For the last two weeks he's not been feeling very good," said Tolleson, whose father lives in nearby Allen. "He's just been at home, not a lot of energy, and spent about a week in the emergency room."

Then Thursday against the Angels, he entered the game with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to face Albert Pujols. Tolleson has developed into one of the league's more reliable closers, performing admirably after Neftali Feliz washed out of the role in May. Having gone 29-for-32 in save opportunities, Tolleson has used a 9.82 K/9 and 3.34 FIP to cement his role in the ninth inning.
