Sun Mar 1014:45Marlins Ink Mychal Givens To Minor-League Pact
The Miami Marlins have signed reliever Mychal Givens to a minor-league deal. The veteran right-hander spent the 2023 season with the Orioles but appeared in just six games, posting a 11.25 ERA in that time. Much of his nine-year career has been spent with Baltimore but Givens has also appeared with the Rockies, Reds, Cubs, and Mets. He has been an effective reliever in his career as he sports a 3.47 ERA across 425 appearances, posting a 3.38 ERA across 59 outings as recently as the 2022 season. He could very well lock down a role with the Fish in the 2024 season but won't be in the mix for saves behind closer Tanner Scott in the 2024 campaign.

Relief pitcher Mychal Givens has officially been released by the Baltimore Orioles. Now 33, Givens has been hurt most of the year and ineffective when on the mound. He has been a good high-leverage reliever in the past and could be scooped up by another team after he cleared waivers and was given his release.

Tue Aug 1 202300:07Mychal Givens Begins Rehab Assignment Monday
Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Mychal Givens (shoulder) began a new rehab assignment Monday, pitching one scoreless inning with one hit allowed and two strikeouts in the Rookie-level Florida Complex league. It was Givens' first action since the end of June, as his previous rehab assignment was halted because he had been feeling discomfort in his injured right shoulder. The 33-year-old has only pitched four big-league innings this season, amassing a poor 11.25 ERA. However, he has served as a reliable high-leverage reliever throughout his career and the O's would gladly welcome him back to bolster their bullpen.

Sat Jul 1 202314:07Mychal Givens Transferred To 60-Day Injured List
Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Mychal Givens (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Saturday. The 33-year-old has appeared in only six games this season, compiling a horrendous 11.25 ERA. Unfortunately, he recently suffered a setback in rehab, so the move isn't surprising. At any rate, there likely aren't many fantasy managers losing sleep over this one, considering he wasn't on many rosters, to begin with. In a corresponding move, the O's selected the contract of Chris Vallimont.

Sun Jun 25 202316:28Mychal Givens Suffers Setback
Baltimore Orioles reliever Mychal Givens (shoulder) experienced soreness in his right shoulder during his rehab assignment. However, manager Brandon Hyde stated that there is a "low level of concern." The 33-year-old has appeared in only six games this season, amassing a miserable 11.25 ERA. He already spent time on the injured list with a knee issue, and his most recent ailment has kept him on the shelf since June 2, meaning his fantasy value can't get any lower. Givens will see team doctors and take things from there, although he'll surely be out longer than anticipated.

Tue May 9 202308:31Mychal Givens Scheduled For Another Rehab Game On Wednesday
Baltimore Orioles reliever Mychal Givens (knee) is ready to throw in another rehab game on Wednesday with Double-A Bowie. It will be his fourth rehab appearance since going on the injured list with left-knee inflammation that he suffered before the season began, and he should almost be ready to rejoin the Major League club. In 2022, Givens posted a 3.38 ERA, 27.3% strikeout rate, and 1.32 WHIP with a pair of saves and seven holds. With Felix Bautista comfortably in the closer role, the 32-year-old won't be in line for many saves once he's back, but fantasy managers can figure he'll contribute a handful of holds as a late-inning option.

Fri Apr 28 202312:34Mychal Givens Starts Rehab Assignment Friday
Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Mychal Givens (knee) will start his minor-league rehab assignment with Double-A Bowie on Friday. Givens has yet to pitch in the big leagues this year for Baltimore due to left-knee inflammation, but he's getting closer to making his 2023 debut. While the 32-year-old right-hander probably won't need to spend a ton of time in the minors, the Orioles also are unlikely to rush him back until he's completely ready. Givens has 31 career saves over eight big-league seasons, but he's likely to operate in more of a middle-relief role when he returns to Baltimore's bullpen, leaving him minimal fantasy appeal. He posted a 3.38 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, two saves and 71 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings in 2022 with the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets.

Sat Apr 1 202315:15Mychal Givens To Throw Next Week
According to Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde, relief pitcher Mychal Givens (knee) will throw a bullpen session next week. The 32-year-old is dealing with left knee inflammation, although Hyde indicated the righty is moving in the right direction. Givens compiled a 4.79 ERA in 19 games last season while adding 20 strikeouts. That said, he's unlikely to make a difference on the fantasy end when he returns unless his role changes.

Tue Mar 28 202310:25Mychal Givens Headed To Injured List
Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Mychal Givens (knee) appears headed to the injured list to open the 2023 season, as general manager Mike Elias said the 32-year-old right-hander is running out of time to get ready. Givens tested his injured left knee during a simulated game on Sunday, but he again felt pain and threw only 10 pitches before meeting with the training staff, according to manager Brandon Hyde. "He's doing fine, he's doing better," Elias said. "I don't think it's anything catastrophic." Even when healthy, Givens won't be in line for save opportunities in Baltimore, as Felix Bautista earned the role as the team's regular closer with his performance in 2022.

Thu Mar 23 202320:53Mychal Givens Resumes Throwing
Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Mychal Givens (knee) resumed throwing from flat ground on Thursday. The right-hander is working his way back from left knee soreness. The injury continues to linger which puts his status for Opening Day in jeopardy. The fact Givens has resumed throwing is a good sign, but he still has more work to do. The 32-year-old signed a one-year deal with the O's over the offseason. He should serve as a late-inning option and extra insurance as a closer in case Felix Bautista goes down at some point.

Mon Dec 19 202220:25Mychal Givens Returns To Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal with free-agent relief pitcher Mychal Givens on Monday, pending a physical, according to sources familiar with the deal. Givens began his major-league career in Baltimore, playing for them from 2015 to 2020. While he probably won't be the Orioles closer in 2023, Givens should have a high-leverage role in the back of their bullpen and should have some fantasy appeal in leagues that count holds. In his eight-year big-league career, the 32-year-old right-hander has a solid 3.40 ERA (3.73 FIP), a 1.19 WHIP, 31 saves and a 28.4 percent strikeout rate in 457 2/3 innings over 419 appearances (one start). In 2022 with the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets, Givens had a 3.38 ERA (3.96 FIP), a 1.32 WHIP, two saves and 71 K's in 61 1/3 innings over 59 outings (one start).

Wed Nov 9 202221:06Mets Make Mychal Givens A Free Agent
The New York Mets declined relief pitcher Mychal Givens' $3.5 million mutual option for the 2023 season on Wednesday, according to general manager Billy Eppler. Givens is now a free agent. The Mets acquired Givens from the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline in early August, and he had a 4.79 ERA (4.22 FIP), a 1.45 WHIP, 20 strikeouts and six walks in 20 2/3 innings over 19 outings (one start) to close out the regular season. The 32-year-old journeyman reliever has now played with six different teams in the last three years and could add another team to the list. He does have 31 career saves in eight big-league campaigns, but Givens is unlikely to land a closing gig if/when he signs with another team this offseason.

Tue Aug 2 202218:50Mychal Givens Gets Traded To Mets
Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Mychal Givens is headed to the New York Mets. The two sides have agreed on a trade that will send Givens to New York and pitcher Saul Gonzalez to the Cubs. Givens is posting a 2.66 ERA with two saves and 51/19 K/BB ratio through 40.7 innings in Chicago. This move helps bolster the Mets bullpen as they continue to fight for a playoff spot. He should continue to work in high leverage spots, but his fantasy value isn't expected to change. Gonzalez has pitched well in St. Lucie this season, but isn't someone who is near MLB ready. These deadline moves for Chicago leaves Rowan Wick as the favorite for saves through the rest of the season.

Fri Apr 15 202200:20Mychal Givens Locks Down Save For Cubs
Chicago Cubs reliever Mychal Givens notched his first save of the season on Thursday as his club defeated the Rockies 5-2. The right-hander worked around a one-out single as he struck out a pair in the 17-pitch frame, throwing 12 of his pitches for strikes. Givens has now picked up a win, a hold, and a save in four outings this season with one run allowed and seven punch outs in 3 1/3 IP. David Robertson has picked up the only other save chances for the Cubs bullpen this year, but Givens could cut into more of his work if he can keep up the strong results.

Thu Mar 17 202219:22Mychal Givens Signs With Cubs
The Chicago Cubs and reliever Mychal Givens have agreed to a one-year deal worth $5 million, according to Jesse Rogers. Givens should help a Cubs' bullpen that posted a4.31 ERA in 2021. Givens posted a 2.73 ERA over 29 1/3 innings pitched while striking out 34 batters in 2021 with the Colorado Rockies. This appears to be a get-right contract for Givens who missed significant time in 2021 with a lower back strain. Givens has closer experience and could also fill this role for the Cubs as it is one of their current needs.

Sat Sep 25 202107:58Mychal Givens Blows A Save On Friday
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Mychal Givens allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning in an 8-7 win over the Washington Nationals on Friday. Givens allowed three hits, walked two and struck out one on the way to being charged with his third blown save of the season. The veteran reliever was called upon to protect a 7-4 lead in the ninth inning but gave up two doubles and a single in the outing. Givens now has a 3-3 record, 3.12 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, eight saves and 53 strikeouts over 49 innings of work. His role as the team's primary closer should be safe for now, although Michael Lorenzen could start to cut into his save chances if his struggles continue.

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Mychal Givens threw a scoreless ninth inning to save a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. Givens struck out two and walked two in the outing. The save was Givens' eighth in 10 opportunities this year. Overall, Givens has a 3-3 record, 2.85 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 51 strikeouts over 47 1/3 innings of work. He has a firm grip on the closer's role in Cincy and is worth an add by any fantasy gamer in need of saves over the final few weeks of the season.

The veteran reliever has been excellent in the back of the Cincy bullpen since the club acquired him at the trade deadline in late July. He appears to have emerged as the favorite for save chances in Cincinnati and should be rostered in all leagues going forward.

He appears to have a firm grip on the closer role in Cincinnati, although manager David Bell has proven to be a bit unpredictable when it comes to doling out save chances.
