Sun Mar 1712:13Miles Mikolas To Start On Opening Day
With St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Sonny Gray (hamstring) not set to be cleared to pitch on Opening Day on March 28 against the Los Angeles Dodgers on the road, right-hander Miles Mikolas has been tabbed as the Opening Day starter for the Red Birds. Not only is Mikolas not much of a mixed-league target in standard 12-team fantasy leagues, but he should be considered a poor DFS option on Opening Day against a strong Dodgers lineup that added Shohei Ohtani in the offseason. The 35-year-old veteran is hoping an improved slider will make him more effective this year after he had a 4.78 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 39 walks, 137 strikeouts and league-highs in hits allowed (226) and earned runs (107). There's just not much fantasy upside from a pitcher with a career 6.6 strikeouts per nine innings in eight years in the majors.

Thu Feb 2916:45Miles Mikolas Working On His Slider
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas was an All-Star in 2018 and 2022, but he struggled to a 9-13 record, 4.78 ERA (4.27 FIP) and 1.32 WHIP with a league-high 226 hits allowed, a league-high 107 earned runs given up, 39 walks and 137 strikeouts in 201 1/3 innings over 35 starts. The 35-year-old topped the 200-inning mark for the third time in his career, but his 16.7% whiff rate was in the bottom one percent of the league, per Baseball Savant. Mikolas also had career-worsts in hard-hit rate (43%) and average exit velocity (90.4 mph). To bounce back in 2024, he's working hard on his slider and the sequencing of his pitches. He may try to throw less strikes on purpose as well -- because he rarely walks hitters, they have become much more aggressive against him. His poor 2023 campaign and his age has dropped Mikolas out of RotoBaller's top-100 starting pitcher rankings.

Mon Aug 7 202314:17Miles Mikolas To Return On Tuesday
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas will make his return to the starting rotation on Tuesday to face the Tampa Bay Rays after serving his five-game suspension. Mikolas was suspended for throwing at Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ on July 27. The 34-year-old will be on six days of rest this week, but he will still be a pretty shaky option for fantasy managers in a tough matchup against the Rays. On the season, Mikolas has gone 6-7 with a 4.29 ERA (3.76 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, 26 walks and 94 strikeouts in 134 1/3 innings over 24 starts. The two-time All-Star's weak 6.6 career K/9 gives him a relatively low fantasy ceiling.

Wed Aug 2 202319:31Miles Mikolas Drops Appeal Of Suspension
St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that right-hander Miles Mikolas dropped the appeal of his MLB-mandated five-game suspension and will begin serving it on Wednesday. Mikolas was suspended for intentionally hitting Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ on July 27. His next start on the mound will come on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays next Tuesday. The 34-year-old hurler has made a league-high 24 starts so far in 2023 and has gone 6-7 with a 4.29 ERA (3.77 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, 26 walks and 94 strikeouts in 134 1/3 innings pitched. Mikolas has been quite solid, but his weak 6.6 career K/9 doesn't give fantasy managers a ton of upside. His matchup against the Rays next week will be one to fade him in.

Mon Jul 31 202312:50Miles Mikolas To Start Tuesday
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas is lined up to start on Tuesday against the visiting Minnesota Twins. It will be right-hander Jack Flaherty's turn in the starting rotation, but the sense internally is it's not fair to ask Flaherty to prepare to start given the possibility that he's traded at Tuesday's Aug. 1 trade deadline. Mikolas is appealing the five-game suspension that he received from the league for intentionally throwing at Ian Happ in his last start. The 34-year-old will be well-rested after throwing just 14 pitches before being ejected in his last start. He's gone 6-6 this year with a 4.38 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 87 K's in 127 1/3 innings (23 starts). Mikolas finished the month of July with a 4.18 ERA (3.42 FIP), only three walks and 17 strikeouts in 28 innings over six starts.

Fri Jul 28 202319:08Miles Mikolas Suspended For Five Games
St. Louis Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas was issued a five-game suspension on Friday. The right-hander was ejected from Thursday's matchup against the Cubs after throwing at and hitting outfielder Ian Happ, who nailed catcher Willson Contreras in the head with a backswing during a previous pitch. However, considering Mikolas is 6-6 with a 4.38 ERA in 23 starts this season, his absence won't impact many fantasy managers.

Thu Jul 27 202321:11Miles Mikolas Ejected From Thursday's Game
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas was ejected from Thursday's game against the Chicago Cubs. He threw at Cubs outfielder Ian Happ after Happ hit catcher Willson Contreras in the head with a backswing. Mikolas beaned Happ during the next pitch and was ultimately tossed from the game. The 34-year-old threw 14 pitches, allowing one run while striking out one across 2/3 of an inning before being ejected. He owns a 4.38 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 87 strikeouts across 127 1/3 innings. Mikolas is tentatively scheduled to face the Twins in a home start on Wednesday.

Fri May 26 202303:12Miles Mikolas Keeps Dealing With Seven Scoreless Frames
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas hurled seven innings of no-run ball in the team's 2-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday. He struck out five hitters on the way to his third win of the year. The 34-year-old has righted the ship after a tumultuous beginning to the year (10.05 ERA through three starts). Mikolas has an impressive 2.47 ERA over the following eight appearances (47.1 innings) and is 3-0 over the stretch. The soft tosser will carry a much-improved 4.23 ERA and 1.39 WHIP into his next start on Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, a club he owns a rock-solid 3.06 ERA across 106 career innings against.

Wed May 3 202312:47Miles Mikolas Trying To Figure Things Out Wednesday
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas is set to face Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. The eight-year veteran is far from repeating his 2022 season, as he's running a 5.97 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 19.3% strikeout rate, and 6.0% walk rate across six starts. Mikolas has been the victim of a .375 BABIP, but even his 4.48 xFIP doesn't offer much hope for fantasy owners. In deep leagues, it's okay to stash the 34-year-old on the bench in case he turns things around, but there's no shame in dropping him, especially in standard 12-team formats.

Fri Mar 24 202313:01Cardinals Give Miles Mikolas A Two-Year Extension
The St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a two-year, $40 million contract extension with starting pitcher Miles Mikolas on Friday, according to sources. In addition to the new extension, Mikolas has been named the team's Opening Day starter for next Thursday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays with Adam Wainwright (groin) set to open the season on the injured list. It will be Mikolas' second career Opening Day start, but it will be against one of the best offenses in baseball. The two-time All-Star had a 3.29 ERA (3.87 FIP), 1.03 WHIP and career-high 19 percent strikeout rate in 202 1/3 innings over 33 outings (32 starts) last year. The 34-year-old doesn't strike out a ton and should be viewed as a streamer more than anything in fantasy.

Wed Mar 8 202314:31Miles Mikolas To Start Wednesday For Team USA
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas is scheduled to start against Team Colombia in the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday for Team USA. Mikolas was an All-Star for the second time in 2022, and he's allowed two hits and no runs while striking out five in five Grapefruit League innings so far in spring training. The 34-year-old is guaranteed a rotation spot with St. Louis Heading into the 2023 season after posting a 3.29 ERA (3.87 FIP), 1.03 WHIP and career-high 19 percent strikeout rate in 33 outings (32 starts) covering 202 1/3 innings. Mikolas doesn't walk many, but he also doesn't strike out a ton and isn't an overpowering pitcher, making him more of a fantasy streamer.

Tue Sep 27 202223:15Miles Mikolas Strikes Out Nine Tuesday
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas matched his season high in strikeouts Tuesday, setting down nine Brewers in a 6-2 win over Milwaukee. Mikolas pitched six innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk to earn his 12th win of the year against 13 losses. With his 3.30 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 199 1/3 innings this season, Mikolas has been durable and effective for fantasy managers. He lines up for one more regular-season start to tune up for the playoffs.

Sun Sep 4 202219:08Miles Mikolas Tosses Eight Scoreless Innings
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas posted a stellar performance against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. The right-hander allowed only two hits on the day, while going eight scoreless innings. This marked the third time this season that Mikolas has thrown eight innings while allowing two hits or less. The 34-year-old has 19 quality starts and 3.32 ERA across 27 starts this season. He should remain a reliable fantasy option throughout the rest of the year.

Sat Aug 20 202212:17Miles Mikolas Goes Eight Innings Again
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas pitched yet another eight-inning gem Friday night, allowing one run on two hits and a walk to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He struck out four batters and was credited with his 10th win of the season. Mikolas lacks significant fantasy upside with just 118 strikeouts in 157 1/3 innings of work, but he's allowed more than three earned runs just four times in 25 starts this season, making him one of the most reliable fantasy starters in the league. He has a 3.32 ERA and 1.02 WHIP for the year.

Sun Aug 14 202221:26Miles Mikolas Goes Eight In Win
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas completed eight innings Sunday en route to his ninth win of the season. Mikolas gave up two runs on four hits and no walks with six strikeouts. This outing was a significant rebound for the right-hander, who gave up 10 runs on 14 hits in 2 2/3 innings in his previous trip to the mount. Overall, Mikolas has been a consistent, if unspectacular, fantasy option with a 3.44 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 114 strikeouts in 149 1/3 innings this season.

Mon Jul 18 202211:03Miles Mikolas Added To NL All-Star Team
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas has been added to the 2022 National League All-Star roster as a replacement for Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes, who will be inactive for Tuesday's game in Los Angeles. Mikolas picked up a win in his final start of the first half of the season on Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds by giving up just one run in seven innings to even his record at 7-7. The 33-year-old right-hander finished the first half with three straight quality starts, and overall he has posted a strong 2.54 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 92 strikeouts and 23 walks in 120 1/3 innings pitched over his 19 starts for the Red Birds.

Thu Jul 7 202213:46Miles Mikolas Takes Loss in Quality Start Wednesday
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas was solid once again on Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk in six innings while striking out four batters. Unfortunately, he didn't receive any run support from the offense, and he was assigned his seventh loss of the season against five wins. Mikolas has been the definition of steady this season, recording 11 quality starts in 17 attempts with a 2.72 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. The only thing keeping him from being a top-end fantasy starter is his inability to miss more bats, but he's a stabilizing force for any fantasy manager who roster him.

Tue Apr 26 202200:32Miles Mikolas Turns In Another Strong Start Monday
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas took a no-decision despite a strong start in Monday's 5-2 loss to the Mets. Mikolas pitched 7 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. He was in line for the win, heading into the ninth with a two-run lead, but the Cardinals' bullpen imploded for a five-run top of the inning. The 33-year-old has gotten off to a surprisingly solid start this season, going 1-0 with a 1.21 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 22 1/3 IP. Mikolas has never been a huge fantasy asset, but he could be worth a look in deeper leagues, as he is currently just 47 percent rostered. His next matchup will be a favorable one against the Diamondbacks at home, making him an even more attractive waiver wire option.

Sun Mar 20 202222:40Miles Mikolas Spins Two Solid Innings On Sunday
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas got the start in Sunday's Grapefruit League game and pitched two solid innings. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out three. Mikolas has been limited to just nine starts last year after not pitching at all in 2020, but he reportedly felt good and was reaching 94 on the radar gun. There's plenty of injury risk involved in drafting Mikolas, but if he's healthy, he should be a solid back-of-the-rotation contributor in most fantasy formats.
