Whitehurst completed 2-of-3 passes for 11 yards with an interception in Friday's preseason game against the Chiefs.

Whitehurst appears to have won the No. 3 quarterback job for the Titans, as rookie Alex Tanney didn't see any action at all Friday. The veteran probably won't have any value unless both Marcus Mariota and Zach Mettenberger get hurt.

The fact that Whitehurst was throwing to the likes of Turzilli and Tevin Westbrook rather than building a rapport with receivers projected to make the roster suggests that he's not in the team's quarterback plans in 2015. Whitehurst trails Zach Mettenberger for the backup job by a substantial margin.

Whitehurst completed 12-of-28 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing four times for 19 yards in Sunday's loss to the Colts.

Whitehurst was fairly impressive in Week 16 against the Jaguars, completed nearly 69 percent of his passes for 287 yards and a touchdown, but it came crashing down Sunday and he was eventually replaced by backup Jordan Palmer. With Zach Mettenberger the future under center in Nashville, Whitehurst is unlikely to make much of a fantasy impact in 2015.

While the Titans will likely turn to either Zach Mettenberger (shoulder) or an offseason acquisition as the starter for 2015, Whitehurst does have a year remaining on his contract. Mettenberger hasn't officially been ruled out for Week 17, but a return seems unlikely.

Not that there was any real doubt, given that Mettenberger was listed as doubtful, but working in Whitehurst's favor this week is that both WR Kendall Wright and TE Delanie Walker are active for Thursday's contest.

Walker was ultimately tackled around the 10-yard line, and Whitehurst was running with him, waiting for another lateral in which Whitehurst might have scored. In any case, Whitehurst will be the starter on Thursday at Jacksonville if Locker is unable to go. Rookie Zach Mettenberger hasn't been ruled out yet this year with his shoulder injury, but it seems highly unlikely that he'll play Thursday.

While he failed to throw a touchdown for the first time in his three games in relief of Locker, Whitehurst has been better than expected and has done a good job of not turning the ball over (one interception and zero lost fumbles). Locker was questionable coming into the game but was unable to practice this week, so it's unclear just how close he really was to playing. If he misses another week of practice, Whitehurst will likely be under center in Week 7 at Washington, who are ranked 23rd in passing yards allowed this season, but have allowed 11 passing touchdowns, the fourth-most in the NFL.

Whitehurst has been sneaky good in relief of Locker this year, completing 25-of-44 passes for 371 yards and three scores with just one interception. With a juicy matchup against Jacksonville's awful pass defense on tap, Whitehurst is an appealing sleeper this week if you're in the market for a quarterback. Opposing passers are averaging 330 yards and 2.4 touchdowns against the Jags this season.

Whitehurst came on in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Browns after Jake Locker suffered another wrist injury, and he completed 13-of-21 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns.

Whitehurst was excellent soon after taking over for Locker, throwing an 11-yard touchdown to Kendall Wright and then a 75-yard touchdown pass to Justin Hunter to put the Titans up 28-3. They inexplicably changed their game plan in the second half, which ultimately led them to blowing their entire lead and losing 29-28. Locker did not play in Week 4 against the Colts due to a wrist injury, and if the latest concern is serious, Whitehurst could be under center for Week 6 against the Jaguars.

Whitehurt played in place of the injured Jake Locker (wrist), but didn't do much in his first start since the 2011 season. He connected with five different receivers, including tight end Delanie Walker five times for 84 yards and a touchdown. The Titans' receivers dropped a number of passes, which certainly didn't help Whitehurst, but he's not a great quarterback to begin with, so he wasn't expected to go into Lucas Oil Stadium and outscore the high-powered Colts' offense. It's unclear just how close Locker was to starting Sunday, but if he can't go next week, Whitehurst will get the Week 5 start against the Browns, who are giving up the sixth-most passing yards per game this season.
