Wed Mar 2009:39Yu Darvish Fails To Get Through Four Innings
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Yu Darvish only lasted 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision in Wednesday's Opening Day contest versus the Los Angeles Dodgers in Seoul, South Korea. The veteran allowed two hits, one unearned run, three walks and struck out three on the day. Darvish probably could have gone longer, but the Padres defense did not do him any favors. Darvish had good results in the Cactus League this spring with a 2.89 ERA in three starts, but is coming off one his worst careers in the big leagues with a 4.56 ERA in 2023. Despite the ERA, his numbers were on par for the rest of his career. The 37-year-old isn't getting any younger, but he should remain a solid option for managers in the middle of their rotation.

Tue Mar 1200:40Yu Darvish To Start First Game In Seoul Series
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Yu Darvish (elbow) has been named the Opening Day starter in Seoul, Korea, against the Dodgers. Right-hander Tyler Glasnow will oppose him. The 37-year-old's 2023 season was cut short when he underwent surgery to address elbow inflammation. However, he has looked good this spring, pitching 9 1/3 innings with a 2.89 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and 10 strikeouts. Darvish's fantasy value has fluctuated over the past several seasons. Fantasy managers will be hoping he can both stay healthy and find his strikeout stuff for 2024. For DFS purposes to kick off the year, Darvish will be one to avoid.

Fri Feb 2314:49Yu Darvish Preparing To Pitch In Cactus League Game
San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish (elbow) threw 32 pitches during live batting practice on Friday, according to Dennis Lin of The Athletic. He expects that his next appearance will come in a game, and he hopes to be ready for the Padres' regular season-opening series against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Korea. This is a noteworthy update out of Spring Training given that Darvish's 2023 season was cut short when he underwent surgery to address elbow inflammation. He finished the year with a 4.03 FIP, 9.31 K/9, and 2.84 BB/9 through 24 starts.

Sun Feb 1113:47No Lingering Health Concerns for Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove
San Diego Padres starting pitchers Yu Darvish (elbow) and Joe Musgrove (shoulder) have no lingering health concerns, according to manager Mike Shildt. The new Padres skipper shared the news with reporters on Sunday as pitchers and catchers are reporting for spring training. This is good news, as both Darvish and Musgrove dealt with season-ending injuries last season. Darvish was placed on the 15-day injured list in August with elbow inflammation caused by a bone spur. The injury ended up cutting his season short, and he finished the campaign with a disappointing 8-10 record, 4.56 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 141:43 K/BB over 136 1/3 innings (24 starts). Musgrove, who started the season late due to a toe injury, was shut down in early August due to shoulder-capsule inflammation in his right arm. Musgrove was effective when healthy, however, finishing with a 10-3 record, 3.05 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 97:21 K/BB over 97 1/3 innings (17 starts). Both pitchers will be key to the Padres' success in 2024, as they'll likely lose free agent and reigning NL Cy Young award winner Blake Snell, and Seth Lugo and ... [More]

Sun Feb 412:28No Limitations For Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish
San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt said that right-handers Joe Musgrove (shoulder) and Yu Darvish (elbow) are "ramping up full-gear, ready to go, no limitations" heading into spring training in several weeks. "They mixed in a few hitters recently. They're recovering well, so they're ready, healthy." Musgrove made only 17 starts in 2023 after being shut down in early August due to inflammation in his right shoulder. The 31-year-old was statistically solid, as he was in his first two years with the Padres, before his injury and should be a solid No. 3 fantasy starter as long as he looks healthy in spring training. Darvish, 37, is much more of a risk after he was shut down late in August due to a bone spur in his elbow. In addition to his injury, Darvish's dominance has slowly been fading in recent seasons.

Tue Sep 12 202321:51Yu Darvish Won't Pitch Again This Season
San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish (elbow) has been shut down for the remainder of the 2023 season, according to Dennis Lin of The Athletic. Over 24 starts this year, the 11-year veteran pitched to a 4.56 ERA (4.03 FIP), 1.30 WHIP, and 24.6% strikeout rate with eight wins. However, Darvish suffered an elbow injury at the end of August, and he hasn't progressed quickly enough to return to action before the end of the year. Hopefully, the 37-year-old can put this season behind him and rebound in 2024.

Thu Aug 31 202320:53Yu Darvish Dealing With Bone Spur
San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish (elbow) has a bone spur in his right elbow and received a cortisone shot, according to manager Bob Melvin. Darvish will be shut down temporarily. There's still a chance he'll pitch again this season, but it's likely contingent on something changing in a big way in the National League standings. The Padres entered play on Thursday 10 games under .500 and 7.5 games out of the final wild-card spot in the NL with four teams in front of them, so it's highly unlikely they'll get into the postseason. Fantasy managers should already be preparing for the 37-year-old not to return in 2023. The five-time All-Star has had an up-and-down year in 2023, going 8-10 with a 4.56 ERA (4.04 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, 43 walks and 141 K's in 136 1/3 innings over his 24 starts.

Mon Aug 28 202316:23Padres Place Yu Darvish On 15-Day Injured List
The San Diego Padres placed right-hander Yu Darvish (elbow) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 26) on Monday with right-elbow inflammation and recalled right-hander Matt Waldron from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move. Darvish has really struggled in his last three starts, allowing 13 earned runs on 23 hits (two homers) while walking three and striking out 16 in 16 innings, so the reeling Padres will shut him down for at least the next two weeks. If the Friars fall any further out of contention, there's a chance we may not see Darvish pitch again in 2023. Either left-hander Rich Hill or Waldron are the most likely candidates to take Darvish's spot in the starting rotation moving forward.

Fri Jul 14 202322:14Yu Darvish Leads Padres To Victory Friday
On Friday, San Diego starting pitcher Yu Darvish pitched six innings, allowing only one run and two walks while striking out nine batters. Darvish helped lead the Padres to an 8-3 victory over the Phillies. This win was his first since June 9, bringing his record to 6-6 with a 4.65 ERA in this year's campaign. The nine strikeouts in the contest matched his second-highest tally of the season. The 38-year-old has struck out 98 opposing batters in 91 frames in 2023.

Wed Jul 5 202321:12Yu Darvish Scheduled To Start On Friday
San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish (illness) is scheduled to make his return to the rotation and start on Friday at home against the visiting New York Mets. Darvish has missed his last two turns through the rotation due to a viral illness that caused him to lose nearly 10 pounds, but he's feeling back to normal this week and will return for one more start before the All-Star break next week. The 36-year-old Japanese right-hander remains relevant in all fantasy leagues because of his 25.7 percent strikeout rate, but the five-time All-Star has disappointed otherwise with a 4.84 ERA (3.88 FIP) in 80 innings over 14 starts. Darvish won't be a great DFS target in his first start back this Friday, even against the equally disappointing Mets.

Tue Jul 4 202315:32Yu Darvish Expecting To Start This Weekend
San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish (illness) is expected to start in the team's next series this weekend against the New York Mets. He said he lost around seven pounds while dealing with something "viral," but it wasn't COVID. Darvish is close to 100 percent now and is aiming to make his first start since June 21. The 36-year-old could be somewhat limited in that start from a stamina standpoint because of an extended layoff, so he probably won't be the smartest streaming option in DFS. Darvish also hasn't been as sharp so far in 2023, going 5-6 with a 4.84 ERA (3.88 FIP), 1.22 WHIP and 25 walks, although he has struck out 85 batters in 80 innings over his 14 starts.

Sun Jul 2 202313:09Yu Darvish Not Starting On Sunday
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Yu Darvish (illness) is not starting on Sunday vs. the Cincinnati Reds. Darvish was scratched from his original start earlier this week against the Pirate before tentatively being lined up to start Friday against the Reds. Neither of those turns materialized and now he's not starting Sunday either as Adrian Morejon gets the nod against Cincinnati. There's a chance the Padres could just shut Darvish down with the All-Star break around the corner so fantasy managers should stick with their contingency plan. The Padres kick off a three-game series at home against the Angels, which starts on Monday, followed by a three-game series against the Mets at home.

Fri Jun 30 202309:38Yu Darvish Could Start Sunday
San Deigo Padres right-hander Yu Darvish (illness) will miss his start on Friday while dealing with an undisclosed illness. However, he threw a bullpen session on Thursday and could face the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday if his side session goes well. Darvish has disappointed thus far over 80 innings, pitching to a 4.84 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 14 starts, but he does own a 25.7% strikeout rate and 3.86 FIP with five victories. Fantasy managers should assume this isn't a serious issue, and it sounds like the 36-year-old veteran will be back on the mound soon.

Wed Jun 28 202321:18Yu Darvish May Not Be Ready To Go Friday
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Yu Darvish (illness) joined the team in Pittsburgh on Wednesday and still isn't feeling well, and he might not be able to make his next scheduled start on Friday at the Cincinnati Reds. Left-hander Ryan Kerr is on his way to join the team with Reiss Knehr (elbow) going on the injured list after making a spot start for Darvish on Tuesday on short notice. Fantasy managers need to prepare for the chance that Darvish misses his second start in a row later this week. The 36-year-old Japanese right-hander has also struggled in his last three starts against the Rockies, Rays and Giants, allowing a combined 14 runs on 20 hits while walking seven and fanning 17 in 16 1/3 innings. Hopefully, he can get back on track on the mound when he's feeling better.

Tue Jun 27 202316:01Yu Darvish Scratched With Illness Tuesday
San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish (illness) has been scratched from his start on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates due to an illness. Right-hander Reiss Knehr will make the start instead. Fantasy managers will obviously want to remove Darvish from their starting lineups on Tuesday, and hopefully he'll be able to make his next turn through the starting rotation. The 36-year-old veteran has a disappointing 4.84 ERA on the season and has really struggled in his last three starts, allowing 14 runs on 20 hits (two homers) while walking seven and striking out 17 in 16 1/3 innings. Maybe a little extra time off will serve him well, but the good news is he still has a strong 25.7% strikeout rate on the year. Knehr has made only three relief appearances for the Friars, and they were all back in April, so he's unlikely to go very deep into Tuesday's game.

Tue Jun 27 202314:31Yu Darvish In Desperate Need Of Bounce-Back Outing Tuesday
San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish is in serious need of a productive outing Tuesday night when he takes on the Pirates in Pittsburgh. The right-hander has been shelled in each of his last three starts, combining to surrender 14 earned runs on 20 hits and seven walks across 16 1/2 innings in that time. Darvish has now surrendered at least four earned runs in three straight starts and four of his last five. The 36-year-old's rollercoaster season has culminated in a 4.84 ERA across 14 starts, however, his 3.85 FIP and 3.82 SIERA suggest that he should see improved results moving forward. Tuesday night against a Pirates offense that is tied for 23rd with a .302 wOBA against right-handed pitching represents a nice opportunity to get back on track.

Sat Jun 3 202310:03Yu Darvish Aims For Continued Dominance Of Former Club
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Yu Darvish toes the rubber against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. The 36-year-olds looks for better results than those he yielded versus the New York Yankees last Sunday, when he imploded for season-worsts in innings (2 1/3), runs allowed (seven), and strikeouts (two). Darvish's ERA swelled to an underachieving 4.61 figure, but a solid 1.20 WHIP suggests he could be in for some positive regression soon. Perhaps the five-time All-Star's turnaround begins in Saturday's draw with the Cubs, who he possesses a wonderful 2.33 ERA with 24 punchouts in 19 1/3 career innings opposing his old team. Fantasy managers should feel optimistic about starting Darvish in season-long leagues. DFS players might be able to take advantage of a depressed salary and ownership stemming from the right-hander's most recent shellacking.

Fri May 12 202309:23Yu Darvish Not Worried About Tightness In His Triceps
San Diego Padres starter Yu Darvish (triceps) left Thursday's game after six innings of work due to tightness in his triceps, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. However, manager Bob Melvin told reporters that he'll make his next start, and the right-hander was confident that the injury isn't a concern. The 36-year-old Darvish is in the midst of his 11th season in the big leagues and owns a 3.16 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with 47 strikeouts and two victories over seven starts and 42.2 innings. He's a must-start moving forward, and should fantasy managers should view him as a four-category contributor.

Thu May 11 202321:47Yu Darvish Strikes Out Seven Thursday
San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish allowed two runs on four hits over six innings in a 5-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. Darvish struck out seven and walked one while escaping with a no-decision. The veteran hurler picked up nine swinging strikes in the outing while posting a 30% CSW in the start. Darvish now has a 2-2 record, 3.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 47 strikeouts over 42 2/3 innings of work in 2023. The 36-year-old is scheduled to face the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday in what shapes up as a plus matchup for him

Mon Apr 24 202309:45Yu Darvish Expected To Make Next Start
San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish (hamstring) is expected to make his next scheduled start after exiting early during Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. Darvish was pulled in the bottom of the sixth inning on Sunday and was diagnosed with a right hamstring cramp. He allowed one earned on two hits and five walks while striking out five over 5 2/3 innings before leaving. The Padres right-hander did pick up his first win in 2023. "Darvish is expected to make his next start," said Padres manager Bob Melvin. The 36-year-old owns a 1-2 record with a 3.00 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and a 25:12 K: BB across 24 innings in 2023. Fantasy managers with weekly lineups can start Darvish, who is set to face the Giants in a road matchup on Sunday.
