RHP Ariel Pena's 2016 debut was nothing short of forgettable. The rookie was tagged for five runs on five hits -- including three consecutive home runs -- that allowed the Giants to break open an already-lopsided game in the eighth inning. Pena, who saw limited action with the Brewers last season, was on the opening-day roster for the first time in his career.

Pena (2-1) was touched up for three earned runs on five hits and two walks over 4.1 innings in Friday's loss to the Cubs. He struck out six batters during the contest.

Pena has failed to pitch into the sixth inning in any of his first five big-league starts, but has shown some promise, averaging 9.25 K/9. His next test will be to further limit his walks, having allowed three in 9.1 inning in his past two outings after surrendering 10 in 15 inning in his first three starts of the season.

Pena allowed three runs on six hits and a walk across five innings in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Friday. He struck out five.

Pena has now gone five innings exactly in four straight starts and has not allowed more than three runs in any one of them. What's really impressive is that he has only allowed 19 hits in 23 innings while striking out 21. This may be a guy to keep an eye on in the future, but he simply doesn't go deep enough into games for consideration this year.

Pena took a no decision in a solid start Tuesday against the Cardinals, as he allowed one run on four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out five.

Pena ran out of gas in the sixth, as he allowed a pair of runners to reach and then the bullpen let in the only run charged to Pena all night. It was Pena's best major league appearance yet, as he got 14 swinging strikes from Cardinals hitters in 92 pitches and drew six ground balls. His ERA dropped to 3.46.

Pena is currently scheduled to make another start for the Brewers on Tuesday against the Cardinals, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Pena's first start Wednesday went relatively well, allowing, as he allowed just two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four. While he's currently penciled in, it appears that's not set it stone yet. Assuming nothing happens between now and then, he'll look for a repeat performance Tuesday.

Pena's modest Triple-A stats don't give him a lot of promise, but he may remain in the rotation for another start or three down the stretch. That's probably better news for opposing offenses than for Pena's few fantasy owners.

Pena is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Marlins.

The Brewers decided recently that they had seen enough of Matt Garza and wanted to get a look at other rotation options. Pena will get his chance Wednesday, opposing Tom Koehler in his first career major league start, after posting a 4.46 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 83:32 K:BB in 82.2 innings with Triple-A Colorado Springs this season. It's uncertain if this will be a spot start or if Pena will stick in the rotation, but it will presumably all depend on performance.

Pena had his contract selected by the Brewers on Friday and was promoted from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Pena has been a workhorse for Colorado Springs in 2015, throwing 82.2 innings in 43 appearances and seven starts with a 4.14 ERA and a 9.0 K/9. He has been rewarded with a roster spot and an opportunity to appear out of the Milwaukee bullpen in low-leverage situations.

Pena has given up two earned runs (2.45 ERA) and posted a 5:1 K:BB ratio in 7.1 innings over seven appearances this spring.

An elbow injury cut short Pena's 2014 campaign and also cost him his spot on the Brewers' 40-man roster, but he has thrown the ball well this spring. He seemed like a long shot to break camp with the Brewers, but he is still in camp, so he remains in contention for a roster spot.

After being stuck at the Double-A level for two seasons, Pena made the jump to Triple-A Nashville as a 25-year-old in 2014, but the results weren't pretty (4.56 ERA, 1.33 WHIP). The right-hander has posted strong strikeout rates at each level but has also had some major issues with walks (5.3 BB/9 last season), and it seems the Brewers lost hope that he could develop into a serviceable major leaguer.

Pena was placed on the minor league DL Saturday after reporting right elbow pain, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt reports.

The 25-year-old righty only went 1.1 innings in his start Thursday, and will probably miss the rest of the minor league season. He only has a 4.56 ERA in 128.1 innings at Triple-A, so he's a fringe prospect, at best.

Pena was struck out his forearm with a comeback during his most recent outing on Saturday. Fortunately, he managed to escape without a fracture. As of now, he's only expected to miss one start.

His cut comes as no surprise. One of the pieces the Brewers got in the Zack Greinke deal, Pena held a 3.73 ERA over 27 Double-A starts last season. He needs to improve his control before he'll be considered for a call-up.
