Sat Nov 23 201308:51Niemann interested in returning to Rays
In speaking with Bill Chastain of MLB.com, free agent hurler Jeff Niemann indicated that he'd definitely be interested in returning to the Rays.
Niemann elected free agency earlier in the week after he was outrighted off the Rays 40-man roster. He missed the entire 2013 season following major surgery, an injury that he's still recovering from. He's unlikely to make a major impact until the second half of the 2014 season.

Mon Nov 18 201314:52Jeff Niemann elects to become free agent
Jeff Niemann has elected to become a free agent.
Niemann was outrighted off the Rays' 40-man roster earlier this month after missing the entire 2013 season following major shoulder surgery. He's had some past success and should draw interest on the open market from teams looking for low-cost rotation options.

Mon Nov 4 201318:32Jeff Niemann activated from DL
Rays activated RHP Jeff Niemann from the 60-day disabled list.
He's now back on the 40-man roster heading into the offseason, though there's a good chance the Rays wind up non-tendering him. Niemann missed all of the 2013 season following surgery to repair the labrum and rotator cuff in his right shoulder. He's supposedly ahead of schedule but is still a question mark to be ready by Opening Day.

Mon Sep 30 201320:35Niemann hopes to be ready for spring training
Jeff Niemann (shoulder) hopes to be ready for spring training.
Niemann underwent surgery in early April to repair the labrum and rotator cuff in his right shoulder. He was given a 9-12 month timetable but says he's "ahead of schedule," having already started playing catch from 90 feet. Niemann said that throwing off a mound is still "too far down the road," but he's hoping to be in someone's Opening Day rotation next year. "The way things are going," he said, "the timeline really looks well for next year."

Rays transferred RHP Jeff Niemann from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly-acquired Jeff Beliveau. Niemann underwent shoulder surgery last week and is unlikely to return this season.

Wed Apr 10 201316:40Rays' Niemann undergoes shoulder surgery
Jeff Niemann underwent shoulder surgery on Wednesday.
The procedure was deemed a success, but Niemann is doubtful to be able to pitch this season. He'll be arbitration-eligible in the winter and is a non-tender candidate.

Tue Apr 9 201300:01Jeff Niemann to undergo shoulder surgery
Jeff Niemann will undergo surgery on his right shoulder.
It's not clear yet what specific procedure he needs, but it "most likely" will be season-ending. Niemann's velocity has been down since the beginning of spring training, so the fact that he's been physically compromised isn't surprising. The big right-hander is slated for arbitration eligibility one final time this winter, but he might be a non-tender candidate.

Mon Apr 8 201320:24Shoulder surgery likely for Rays' Niemann
Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes that right shoulder surgery for Jeff Niemann "remains likely."
Niemann is being re-evaluated Monday evening, and an announcement might not come until Tuesday. However, it's looking like surgery -- likely of the season-ending variety -- is probable. It's a blow to the depth of the Rays' rotation, but they have Chris Archer and Jake Odorizzi at Triple-A if Roberto Hernandez falters.

Jeff Niemann will have his right shoulder re-evaluated on Monday.

Wed Mar 27 201316:37Jeff Niemann goes six scoreless
Jeff Niemann blanked the Blue Jays for six innings Wednesday, allowing just two hits.
Niemann's velocity was better today, which is something the Rays definitely wanted to see. The strong outing on the heels of Roberto Hernandez's poor one has definitely added some intrigue to the Rays' rotation competition. Of course, the guy we think is the best option, Chris Archer, is being stashed in Triple-A.

Fri Mar 22 201316:33Jeff Niemann gives up five runs to Orioles
Jeff Niemann surrendered five runs and 10 hits in six innings Friday in a loss to the Orioles.
Niemann likely dropped behind Roberto Hernandez in the rotation competition with the poor outing today. His velocity has been disappointing anyway, so maybe he'd be of more use in short stints out of the bullpen. A trade remains a possibility, too.

Fri Mar 15 201310:09Maddon not worried about Niemann's velocity
Rays manager Joe Maddon said Friday that Jeff Niemann is not injured and he's not concerned about right hander's lack of velocity this spring.
Niemann's numbers -- 2.13 ERA, 9/3 K/BB ratio in 12 2/3 innings -- have been good, but his velocity has sat in the mid- to high-80s rather than the low-90s where it normally does. Maddon is convinced the pep on the big righty's fastball will pick up, but if it doesn't, it will certainly hurt his chances at beating out Roberto Hernandez for the fifth starter job.

Thu Mar 14 201317:04Jeff Niemann solid for 4 1/3 innings
Jeff Niemann allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings Thursday in the Rays' 4-3 victory over the Orioles.
Niemann has a 2.13 ERA and a 9/3 K/BB ratio in 12 2/3 innings this spring. With Roberto Hernandez also pitching well and Chris Archer ready if needed, the Rays can and very possibly will move Niemann prior to Opening Day. Still, if they don't get an offer they like, they could keep Niemann as their fifth starter and stick Hernandez in the pen initially.

Sat Mar 9 201317:04Jeff Niemann earns win over Phillies
Jeff Niemann limited the Phillies to one run in 3 2/3 innings in the Rays' 15-7 victory Saturday.
Ryan Howard's solo homer was the only damage. Niemann will almost surely be a part of some team's rotation next month, though he's expendable in St. Pete with Roberto Hernandez and Chris Archer around. He should have a little fantasy value in AL-only leagues.

Mon Mar 4 201317:07Jeff Niemann allows one run to Red Sox
Jeff Niemann allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings to take a loss Monday against the Red Sox.
Niemann was pitching for the second time this spring after throwing two perfect innings his first time out. He'll probably be available in trade talks later this month if Roberto Hernandez and Chris Archer continue to impress. As is, he should probably still be considered the favorite to serve as the Rays' fifth starter.

Fri Jan 18 201309:42Jeff Niemann, Rays avoid arbitration
Rays avoided arbitration with RHP Jeff Niemann by agreeing to a one-year, $3 million contract.
Niemann was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter after making $2.75 million in 2012. The big right-hander missed most of 2012 with a broken fibula and had to be shut down in September with a shoulder issue, but he's healthy now and is expected to be part of the Rays' 2013 rotation.

Sun Dec 2 201211:48Jeff Niemann 'feeling great'
Jeff Niemann (shoulder) said he's "feeling great" and fully expects to be ready for the start of spring training.
Niemann missed most of 2012 with a broken fibula and had to be shut down in September with a shoulder issue that cropped up in his first start back from the DL. It appears that the shoulder is now back to 100 percent, though. Niemann is currently likely on the outside looking in for a rotation spot in 2013, but that could change if the Rays deal a pitcher for offensive help.

Wed Oct 3 201220:42Jeff Niemann throws from mound
Jeff Niemann (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Wednesday.
It's the first time he's thrown from a mound since he left his start on September 1 with right shoulder inflammation. "It was a great day. It's also bittersweet, too, to be able to say [that I'm healthy] with one day left to go [in the season]," Niemann said. "Sad and disappointing, but I'm glad we got back to the point where I'm healthy and able to throw a ball again." Niemann added that he's "really confident" he'll have a normal offseason. He could play winter ball.

Tue Sep 25 201216:27Niemann (shoulder) throws off flat surface
Jeff Niemann (shoulder) threw off a flat surface on Tuesday afternoon and called it "progress."
Niemann hasn't pitched since the first of September because of inflammation in his right shoulder. The 29-year-old starter is still aiming to return by the end of the season, but it seems doubtful to actually happen.
