The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed catcher Juan Centeno to a minor league deal, per a tweet from the team's Triple-A affiliate, the Reno Aces on Monday. Centeno will provide the organization with some veteran depth behind Carson Kelly and Daulton Varsho. The 32-year-old has collected 371 career plate appearances in the Majors dating back to the 2013 season. He most recently appeared in seven games for the Boston Red Sox in 2019, collecting a pair of hits, two RBI, and a stolen base in 18 plate appearances. Most recently, Centeno split the 2021 season between the Detroit Tigers' Double-A and Triple-A affiliates, batting .281 with a .345 on-base percentage and two home runs in 204 plate appearances.

C Juan Centeno (mild concussion) sat out Sunday's game against the Oakland Athletics. Centeno suffered the injury Saturday when hit by in the face mask by A's 2B Jed Lowrie's backswing. Astros manager A.J. Hinch said Centeno likely will miss at least another game or two.

C Juan Centeno left the first game of a doubleheader against Oakland on Saturday in the bottom of the second inning after being hit in the head with the bat on a backswing by A's 2B Jed Lowrie. "He's going to miss a few days," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "Obviously we'll go through the concussion protocol and make sure he's OK. But he got a pretty nasty backswing on the back of the head. He was a little dizzy when we got on the field, then we took him out of the game. He'll be assessed for a concussion and likely miss a little bit of time."

C Juan Centeno was optioned to Triple-A Fresno to make room for C Brian McCann, who will be reinstated from the 10-day disabled list on Thursday. Centeno made eight starts since his recall on Aug. 5 and has started a total of 10 games for the Astros this season across two stints. He hit safely in six of those 10 games.

C Juan Centeno hit a walk-off single in the ninth inning and reached base in three of five plate appearances in his first game since being recalled from Triple-A Fresno on Saturday. Centeno has a hit in all three games that he has appeared for the Astros, batting .455 (5-for-11) with three RBIs. He was batting .323 (71-for-220) in 61 games with Fresno.

C Juan Centeno homered in his first game with Houston and became the first Astros catcher to homer in his first game of the season since Tigers manager Brad Ausmus did so in 2002. Centeno, who had a 16-game hitting streak with Triple-A Fresno before his promotion, clubbed the ninth home run by a Houston backstop this season, a total that ranks third in the American League.
