Sun May 13 201216:48Indians designate Wheeler for assignment
Indians designated RHP Dan Wheeler for assignment.
Wheeler entered play on Sunday with a mediocre 4.76 ERA. His performance in Cleveland's 12-1 loss to Boston later in the day sealed his fate. Wheeler allowed six runs on five hits and a walk in one inning, swelling his ERA to 8.76 and WHIP to 1.95. With an unsightly 2/7 K/BB ratio over 12 1/3 innings, improvement didn't appear imminent. He'll probably clear waivers, though Wheeler did post a decent 4.38 ERA and 39/8 K/BB ratio across 49 1/3 innings last season with the Red Sox.

Tue Jan 3 201223:56Twins spoke with Dan Wheeler's agent Tue.
According to Phil Mackey of 1500ESPN.com, Twins general manager Terry Ryan spoke with the agent for Dan Wheeler on Tuesday.
The Twins are in the market for right-handed relief help, so Wheeler would fit the bill, but one league source tells Mackey that the Twins have "a couple" pitchers higher up on their list. However, they have told Wheeler's camp to keep in touch. The 34-year-old right-hander posted a 4.38 ERA and 39/8 K/BB ratio over 49 1/3 innings with the Red Sox last season and will likely have to accept a one-year deal this offseason.

According to 1500 ESPN's Darren Wolfson, Dan Wheeler's agent tried to reach out to the Twins on Tuesday.
The Twins' front office is on vacation until after the New Year, so the call fell on deaf ears. Wheeler posted a 4.38 ERA and 39/8 K/BB ratio in 49 1/3 innings this past season for the Red Sox, and would make a nice addition to the middle of the Twins' bullpen. It shouldn't take more than a one-year deal.

Wed Dec 7 201110:25Dan Wheeler to decline arbitration from BoSox
Dan Wheeler will decline arbitration from the Red Sox.
It was a little odd to see the Red Sox offer arbitration to the 33-year-old right-hander last month, but they obviously had some sort of handshake agreement in place. Boston would receive a sandwich pick if he signs with another club. Wheeler, a Type B free agent, posted a 4.38 ERA and 39/8 K/BB ratio over 49 1/3 innings this past season.

The Red Sox declined Wheeler's $3 million club option for 2012 a the end of October, so it's odd that they would now make an arbitration offer. He posted a 4.38 ERA, 39/8 K/BB ratio and 1.11 WHIP over 49 1/3 innings this past year out of the Boston bullpen.
