Torres was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday, ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports.

After a flurry of moves at the deadline the Mets needed to designate Torres for assignment, and he will now offer left-handed organizational bullpen depth at Triple-A.

Torres was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Eric O'Flaherty, who was acquired by the Mets on Tuesday. In 39 appearances with the Mets this season, Torres posted a 3.15 ERA but a 5.68 FIP out of the bullpen. The lefty reliever will now go on waivers following Tuesday's roster move.

The Mets opted to send down Logan Verrett to make room for Jenrry Mejia rather than expose Torres, who has no more options remaining, to waivers.

Torres' overall ERA and production is relatively solid, but his struggle with command and control has led to 10 in his last eight innings and 17 in his last 20.2 innings. That inability to limit his free passes issued means that Torres will remain in a middle relief role, even though the Mets need him to retire lefties with Jerry Blevins (forearm) still out.

Torres has become an invaluable member of the Mets' bullpen since coming over from San Diego in spring training.

Torres' ability to retire lefties has been relied upon heavily by manager Terry Collins since Jerry Blevins (arm) was injured. But Torres is not just a lefty specialist, as he can also get out righties, which has enabled Collins to use him all situation. Since a rough first game as a Met, Torres has allowed just one run on four hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts in 9.1 innings.

With Jeurys Familia unavailable due to heavy use, the Mets started the seventh with a 5-0 lead. Sean Gilmartin allowed a run in that inning. Michael Morse homered in the eighth off Carlos Torres who also surrendered a two-run single to Dee Gordon in the ninth. Manager turned to Alex Torres due to his ability to retire righties and lefties and he preserved the Mets' win. Despite that, don't expect many more save from Torres with Familia now closing.

Torres walked the first two batters he faced to start the eighth inning but retired the next six straight to preserve Jon Niese's and the Mets' win. He will need to pitch well the next two weeks in order to retain his roster spot when Vic Black (shoulder) and Bobby Parnell (elbow) are ready to come off the DL.

Torres was traded to the Mets on Monday, Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports.

The return for San Diego is not yet known, but it opens up a spot for Frank Garces to be the Padres' left-handed reliever. The Mets were looking for a southpaw in the bullpen, and while Torres has had issues with his command, he represented an upgrade. Still, he likely will not figure into the closer mix in 2015.

Torres has a 2.57 ERA with seven strikeouts and three walks over seven innings this spring.

Torres had a 3.33 ERA in 2014 with a 51:33 K:BB ratio over 54 innings of work. He's one of the few left handed options in San Diego's bullpen, but is not likely to have much more than a situational role among its relievers.

Torres held the Twins scoreless in two frames during the Padres' road victory Wednesday.

Upon his acquisition in the offseason, it was believed that the Padres held two legitimate setup options for Huston Street. However, Torres has only recorded four holds on the season, and after tallying double-digit innings in each of the first three months, he's been contained to situational duty since the calendar flipped to July. Since that time, he's appeared in 16 games yet completed just 9.1 innings, yielding three runs on 10 hits and seven walks to go with eight strikeouts. Following the trade deadline deal of Street to the Angels, Joaquin Benoit is comfortable in his role as the Padres' closer, while Kevin Quackenbush has settled into the primary setup role. Consequently, Torres holds little fantasy sway outside of his strikeout ability (8.23 K/9), which is modest at best from a reliever.

Torres revealed the news himself on Twitter. It's obviously not ideal that the left-hander got a late start to spring training, but he'll have enough time to be ready by Opening Day.

Torres is still dealing with work visa issues. The 26-year-old native of Venezuela was acquired from the Rays this offseason in a seven-player swap and is expected to open the 2014 season in the San Diego bullpen. He should have enough time in camp to get properly tuned up.

Torres is coming off an excellent season in the Rays' bullpen where he posted a 1.71 ERA and 62/20 K/BB ratio over 58 innings. The 26-year-old is expected to pitch in relief in 2014, but the Padres are open to giving him another chance as a starter in the future.

Torres has a 0.35 ERA overall on the year and has allowed just six hits while boasting a 33/8 K/BB ratio over 26 innings. "He's turning into some kind of relief pitcher right now," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. Torres has worked his way into high-leverage situations and could potentially get some save chances should something happen to Fernando Rodney.
