Sun May 3 201514:52Ortiz designated for assignment by Cubs on Sunday
Ortiz was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Sunday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Ortiz was off to a decent start with Triple-A Iowa this season to the tune of a 3.38 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 10.2 innings, but the Cubs determined that Anthony Varvaro -- who was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox -- was more deserving of a spot on the 40-man roster. The 24-year-old left-hander doesn't figure to attract much interest on the opening market, so it's possible he could remain with the organization if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

Ortiz was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.
The 24-year-old lefty put together an outstanding camp, giving up just one run on six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts in 8.1 Cactus League innings, but it appears it wasn't quite enough to earn an Opening Day bullpen spot. That said, Ortiz will likely be on the short list of candidates to come up when the team need some specialist help or merely a fresh arm.
