Dominguez cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Louisville.

As expected, Dominguez will return to Triple-A after being DFA'd by the Reds on Monday. He's split time between Louisville and Cincinnati this season, but he's batting just .175 in 22 major league contests.

Dominguez shuttled between Triple-A and the majors this season as a replacement infielder for the Reds. In 66 games for Triple-A Louisville, he hit .216 with six home runs and 28 RBI. The former third-round pick has struggled whenever he's reached the majors, batting .175 in 22 major league games. He was designated for assignment to clear room for Kyle Skipworth on the 40-man roster.

Dominguez was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.

Dominguez has received just 20 at-bats since he was called up from Triple-A Louisville on June 11, tallying six hits (three for extra bases) and three RBI, albeit with an 8:0 K:BB ratio. The 28-year-old has good power and a bit of speed, but his K:BB ratios have been consistently terrible throughout his professional career, mostly limiting him to the Triple-A level in recent years.

Dominguez was recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Thursday.

With Zack Cozart (knee) effectively ruled out for the year and Brandon Phillips banged up, the Reds went ahead and added Dominguez and Eugenio Suarez. Whereas Suarez seems like a good bet to take on a regular role at short, Dominguez may very well just fill a utility infield role in the short term after batting .208/.256/.377 in his first 49 games with Louisville this season.

He will get another chance to crack a big league roster out of spring training with the Reds, but his versatility playing multiple infield and outfield positions could give him a shot with a strong showing.

A .274/.307/.460 batting line, 21 homers and 85 RBI in 131 games with Triple-A Fresno last season weren't enough for Dominguez to save his spot on the Giants' 40-man roster, and he's now out of a job completely. He should latch with another club before long, but Dominguez will likely need to cut down on his strikeouts (27.1% K% with Fresno last season) before he gets another major league opportunity.
