Waldrop failed to appear in a game during this most recent stint, and he hasn't seen major league action since 2012, when he was a member of the Twins.

A roster spot opened up when Mike Leake was dealt to San Francisco, and it will be Waldrop who fills that spot, at least temporarily. The 23-year-old Waldrop has struggled since making the jump from Double-A to Louisville, going 21-for-104 with just three extra-base hits (all doubles). He will likely fill a bench role unless Jay Bruce is traded prior to the deadline.

Waldrop, 23, is batting .284/.320/.451 with six home runs, 31 RBI and two steals through 59 games for Double-A Pensacola.

Waldrop had a superb 2014 campaign, hitting .338 with 14 home runs and 14 stolen bases between High-A and Double-A. His numbers have been much more pedestrian so far this year, though.

Waldrop had a great 2014 season to work his way up the organizational ranks, slashing .359/.409/.516 for High-A Bakersfield then .315/.359/.517 after being promoted to Double-A Pensacola. If he can keep up that level, the 22-year-old will continue to move up, and he's now protected from the Rule 5 draft with his addition to the 40-man roster.

Waldrop went 4-for-6 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored in Surprise's 14-3 win over Mesa in the Arizona Fall League on Friday, MiLB.com reports.

The 22-year-old fell a triple shy of the cycle, but that didn't sour what was another impressive night for Waldrop, who is now 8-for-15 through three AFL games. A 12th round pick in 2010, Waldrop hit .338/.385/.516 with 14 homers, 67 RBI and 14 steals in 131 games between High-A Bakersfield and Double-A Pensacola during the regular season. He still hasn't cracked the Reds' top 20 prospect list on MLB.com, but Waldrop is starting to make a name for himself.
