Sat Mar 2312:09Mets Will Option J.D. Martinez To Begin The Year
The New York Mets will officially option designated hitter J.D. Martinez to the minor leagues to begin the 2024 regular season so that he can build up at-bats, meaning he won't be with the team to start the year for at least the first 10 days of the season. Martinez just signed with the Mets the other day and will need to see some live pitching in the minors first before the Mets are comfortable throwing him into the fire in the big leagues in 2024. When the Mets deem him ready, the 36-year-old is expected to be the team's primary designated hitter to help give All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso more protection in the lineup. Martinez had yet another 30-homer season in 2023 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and can provide plenty of power when he's healthy, but his lack of positional eligibility in fantasy makes him less attractive.

Fri Mar 2212:39J.D. Martinez Could Begin In The Minors
New York Mets designated hitter J.D. Martinez has minor-league options remaining but has way more than five years of service time, so he can consent to being sent to the minor leagues. Given the fact that Martinez probably isn't going to be ready by Opening Day next Thursday after just signing with the team on Thursday, Newsday's Tim Healey writes that it looks like the Mets will ask the veteran slugger to start the year in the minors with Triple-A Syracuse. The 36-year-old six-time All-Star bounced back in 2023 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, hitting .271 (117-for-432) with 33 hoe runs and 103 RBI in 113 games played, but fantasy managers may want to temper expectations for Martinez, at least early on, as he ramps back into form after not playing at all in spring training. Mark Vientos could operate as New York's primary DH until Martinez is ready to go.

Thu Mar 2121:07J.D. Martinez Signing One-Year Deal With Mets
The New York Mets and free-agent designated hitter J.D. Martinez agreed to a one-year, $12 million contract on Thursday. After a long stay in free agency, Martinez lands in Queens one week before Opening Day to offer the Mets a formidable protection bat in their lineup behind slugging superstar Pete Alonso. The 36-year-old Martinez is a six-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger and slashed a robust .271/.321/.572 with 33 home runs, 27 doubles, and 103 RBI over 432 at-bats (113 games) for the Los Angeles Dodgers a year ago. He figures to immediately slot into the heart of New York's order as their everyday DH, likely taking some shine away from the fantasy appeal and RBI upside of former top prospect Francisco Alvarez in the process. Martinez's 221 NFBC ADP will rise with the move, and managers who have already drafted should make sure the veteran slugger isn't floating around waiver wires in shallow mixed leagues.

Tue Mar 1216:37Mutual Interest Between Mets, J.D. Martinez
The New York Mets are among the teams talking to free-agent designated hitter J.D. Martinez, and the interest is mutual, according to sources. Owner Steve Cohen has apparently given the go-ahead to seriously discuss signing Martinez, even though the team is over the so-called "Steve Cohen tax," and they'd have to pay a 110 percent tax on any new deals. Martinez would solve the team's long-running issue of not having much protection for cleanup hitter Pete Alonso. The Los Angeles Angels remain involved with the veteran slugger, too, and he's said to like the idea of going to Anaheim to join Mike Trout. Martinez is now 36, but he still managed to hit .271 with 30-plus homers in 2023, but he also struck out over 30% of the time with the Dodgers.

Fri Mar 814:57J.D. Martinez, Marlins In Discussions
The Miami Marlins and free-agent designated hitter J.D. Martinez are in discussions as the slugger lingers on the open market. The Marlins lost their primary designated hitter from last season Jorge Soler to the San Francisco Giants in free agency, so a fit with Martinez makes sense. However, the club could also go with a rotating DH combo of Josh Bell and Jake Burger as Martinez is reportedly seeking a two-year deal. The veteran is coming off of a massive season with the Dodgers in which he hit .271 with 33 home runs and 103 RBI despite appearing in just 113 games a season ago. Despite his utility-only eligibility and his unsure landing spot in free agency, Martinez still makes sense for fantasy managers around his 235.2 ADP.

Wed Feb 700:10Mets, J.D. Martinez Have Continued To Be In Contact
The New York Mets have recently had "dialogue" with free-agent designated hitter J.D. Martinez, per New York Post's Mike Puma. The 36-year-old veteran still has plenty of power left to offer, as he slashed .271/.321/.572 with 33 home runs and 103 RBI in 479 plate appearances last season with the Dodgers. While age is now a concern, Martinez has been a consistent fantasy producer throughout his career and is still a viable fantasy option despite his position eligibility. His overall value could fluctuate slightly depending on where he eventually signs.

Thu Feb 112:29J.D. Martinez A Fit For The Twins?
The Minnesota Twins are looking to add a right-handed bat with the money they freed up by trading second baseman Jorge Polanco to the Seattle Mariners earlier this week, and veteran free-agent designated hitter J.D. Martinez could be the right fit. Martinez's production slipped a bit rom his peak and last year's jump in strikeout rate was worrisome, but the 35-year-old is a six-time All-Star and still hit 30-plus homers and drove in over 100 runs with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023. His 134 OPS+ would have led Twins hitters with at least 100 games and he should be available for something similar to the one-year, $10 million deal he signed last offseason. Martinez still has power, but he's an injury risk for fantasy managers with no positional flexibility. In addition to Martinez, the Twins could also consider Jorge Soler, Michael A. Taylor, Adam Duvall, Tommy Pham and others.

Thu Feb 112:07Mets, Others Waiting For Price To Drop On J.D. Martinez, Jorge Soler
It seems as though the New York Mets and other teams are waiting for the price tag to drop on free-agent designated hitter J.D. Martinez and outfielder/DH Jorge Soler this offseason. Soler can play some outfield, but he's not the greatest of defenders, so interested teams are most likely looking at both Soler and Martinez as full-time DH options for a discounted price. MLB teams don't really want to pay for DH-only types anymore, but both Martinez and Soler proved last year that they can be impact bats. Martinez, 36, bounced back with the Dodgers to hit .271 with 33 home runs and 103 RBI in 432 at-bats, while Soler made his first All-Star team with the Marlins by hitting .250 with 36 long balls and 75 RBI in 137 games played.

Fri Jan 519:58J.D. Martinez Has Plenty Of Suitors
Free-agent designated hitter J.D. Martinez won't be returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers after they signed two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, but he still has plenty of suitors. The Los Angeles Angels are a logical fit, but it remains to be seen if Martinez has interest in playing for them. The New York Mets, Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays are believed to have interest in the veteran slugger, while a reunion with the Arizona Diamondbacks would also make sense. The 36-year-old was great in 2023 with the Dodgers, hitting 33 home runs with an .893 OPS. He's not looking for a long-term deal, so his market figures to include contenders with a need at DH. Martinez is especially attractive to contenders, considering his .294/.386/.588 slash line with a .974 OPS, 10 home runs and 31 RBI in 33 career postseason games.

Thu Dec 28 202318:34Mets, Angels Looking At J.D. Martinez
The New York Mets and Los Angeles Angels are eyeing top free-agent designated hitter J.D. Martinez this offseason. Martinez's old Arizona Diamondbacks team is also seeking a hitter this winter, although it's unclear if they'd be interested in a reunion. Veteran Justin Turner is another option that could be a fit with the Mets, Angels and D-backs. Martinez won't be returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024 after they signed two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani to a record-setting deal already this offseason. Although health is an issue for the 36-year-old right-handed slugger, Martinez remained productive at the plate in 2023 with the Dodgers, hitting .271 (117-for-432) with 33 home runs and 103 RBI in 113 games played while earning his sixth All-Star selection.

Thu Dec 14 202314:44J.D. Martinez Receiving Interest From Blue Jays
Free-agent designated hitter J.D. Martinez is receiving interest from the Toronto Blue Jays on the open market. Of course, the Blue Jays lost out to the Dodgers on two-way superstar and designated hitter, Shohei Ohtani and are still in need of a quality bat at DH. Brandon Belt served as the club's DH in 2023 but he is also now a free agent. For his part, Martinez continued to rake at the plate in his age-35 season with the Dodgers in 2023, hitting .271 with 33 home runs, 103 RBI, and an .893 OPS across 479 plate appearances. He did show a rather large increase in strikeout rate as his 31.1% mark was easily the worst of his career while his decreased 7.1% BB% is well below his 8.7% career mark. Nonetheless, he would still add a fearful bat in a Blue Jays offense that's looking to improve after a surprisingly off year at the plate in 2023.

Tue Nov 7 202316:09J.D. Martinez Doesn't Receive Qualifying Offer From Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers did not extend a $20.325 million qualifying offer to designated hitter J.D. Martinez, according to a source. It means that the Dodgers won't receive draft-pick compensation if Martinez signs elsewhere in free agency. The Dodgers need to keep the DH spot clear for now given their interest in free-agent two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani. Martinez is 36 years old and is a full-time DH at this point in his career, but he should still attract plenty of interest on the open market this offseason after rebounding in 2023 with the Dodgers to the tune of a .271/.321/.572 slash line, .893 OPS, 33 home runs, 27 doubles, two triples, 103 RBI and 61 runs scored in 113 games. The six-time All-Star slugger derived a lot of his fantasy value from being in the middle of a loaded Dodgers lineup, but he still is a high-end power and run-producing target in fantasy.

Tue Sep 19 202312:31J.D. Martinez Goes Deep Twice In Win Over Tigers
Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter J.D. Martinez was seeing the ball well in Monday night's 8-3 win over the visiting Detroit Tigers. Martinez finished the team's 92 win of the year by going 3-for-4 with two home runs, five RBI, two runs scored and a strikeout. The time off that Martinez took in August due to a lingering hamstring issue appears to have done him some good, as he's gone 15-for-48 (.313) with three home runs, two doubles, 15 RBI and seven runs scored in 13 starts since coming off the injured list on Aug. 15. The six-time All-Star needs just two more home runs to reach the 30-homer mark for the fifth time in his career. Martinez is hitting .266/.318/.556 overall with an .873 OPS, 24 doubles, two triples, 91 RBI and 55 runs scored in 101 games in his first year in LA.

Fri Sep 8 202316:23J.D. Martinez Returns From Stint On 10-Day IL
Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter J.D. Martinez (groin) has been activated from the 10-day injured list following a successful rehab assignment. In a corresponding move, infielder Michael Busch was optioned to Triple-A. The 36-year-old Martinez is enjoying a strong season in which he has 25 homers, a .370 xwOBA, a .551 xSLG, and a 54.7 percent hard-hit rate. Needless to say, his return is great news for the Dodgers and fantasy managers alike.

Sat Sep 2 202312:52J.D. Martinez Expected Back Next Friday
Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter J.D. Martinez (groin) will take part in a simulated game on Saturday, and if that goes well, he's scheduled to join Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday for a few minor-league rehab games. If Martinez can avoid any setbacks from a lingering back/hamstring injury next week, the Dodgers expect him to return from the injured list next Friday, Sept. 8, for the series opener against the Washington Nationals. Given the Dodgers' big lead in the National League West, they've had the luxury of taking their time with the 36-year-old veteran slugger. He's been out since Aug. 22 but should eventually return to being LA's regular DH heading into the postseason. Martinez has had a strong first season with the Dodgers, hitting .256/.309/.547 with an .856 OPS, 25 home runs, 78 RBI and 49 runs scored in 351 at-bats.

Wed Aug 30 202321:31J.D. Martinez Resumes Swinging A Bat
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder J.D. Martinez (groin) appears to be making progress after landing on the injured list earlier this month. The veteran outfielder has resumed swinging a bat on Wednesday. Now, the plan is for Martinez to take live batting practice on Thursday before heading out on a rehab assignment. The hope is that Martinez is able to get back by next weekend. Fantasy managers will have to wait and see how Martinez progresses throughout the week.

Mon Aug 28 202321:11J.D. Martinez Expected To Rejoin Dodgers Next Week
Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter J.D. Martinez (groin) could rejoin the team as soon as next week, according to manager Dave Roberts. Martinez initially landed on the 10-day injured list last Tuesday with a strained groin that was called a multi-week injury, but he is reportedly eying the team's road trip which will take them to Miami and Washington next week for a possible return to action. Martinez is hitting .256 with 25 homers, 49 runs, and 78 RBI across 351 at-bats in 2023.

Tue Aug 22 202318:51J.D. Martinez Out Multiple Weeks
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder J.D. Martinez (groin) is going to be sidelined for multiple weeks, according to manager Dave Roberts. The team expects Martinez to miss 2-to-3 weeks of action after being placed on the injured list Tuesday afternoon. The veteran outfielder has been dealing with a lingering groin and hamstring issue for quite some time. The Dodgers have decided to completely shut down Martinez from baseball activities for a week. Michael Busch figures to get a legitimate chance on the Dodgers roster while Martinez is out.

Tue Aug 22 202316:00J.D. Martinez Goes On Injured List With Groin Injury
The Los Angeles Dodgers placed designated hitter J.D. Martinez (groin) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with left-groin tightness. Martinez has been hobbled for much of the second half of the season, so the Dodgers will finally give him some extended rest so that he can get right for what they hope will be a deep postseason run. The 36-year-old has had a fine season in his first LA, hitting .256/.309/.547 with an .856 OPS, 25 home runs, 78 RBI and 49 runs scored in 351 at-bats, and he deserves to be stashed in all fantasy formats until he's back. Infield prospect Michael Busch has been recalled from the minors to replace Martinez and could see some decent playing time in a stacked Dodgers lineup until Martinez is able to return.

Fri Aug 18 202318:40J.D. Martinez Back In The Lineup On Friday
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder J.D. Martinez (groin) is returning to Friday's starting lineup versus the Miami Marlins. This is good news after Martinez was a late scratch from Thursday's contest. The 35-year-old continues to deal with lingering hamstring and groin issues. Hopefully those problems are behind him, as he'll serve as the designated hitter and bat fifth versus right-hander Sandy Alcantara on Friday. Fantasy managers who have Martinez rostered can get him back in their lineups for this game.
