Fri Mar 31 202314:58Cesar Hernandez Signs With Mariners
The Seattle Mariners have signed free-agent infielder Cesar Hernandez to a minor-league deal. The 32-year-old was recently released by the Detroit Tigers after failing to make the Opening Day roster. The expectation is that Hernandez will serve as organizational depth for Seattle. Last season, Hernandez hit .248/.311/.318 with a .629 OPS, one home run, 34 RBI with the Washington Nationals. The veteran infielder probably won't have fantasy value this season.

Tue Mar 28 202310:52Tigers Release Cesar Hernandez
The Detroit Tigers granted second baseman Cesar Hernandez his release on Tuesday. Hernandez wasn't going to make the team's Opening Day roster, so he asked for and was granted his release after hitting .234 (11-for-47) with seven doubles, four RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base in 19 Grapefruit League games with the team this spring. The 32-year-old veteran will most likely have to settle for a minor-league deal with another team to open the 2023 campaign. He spent the 2022 campaign with the Washington Nationals and hit .248/.311/.318 with a .629 OPS, one home run, 34 RBI, 64 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 617 plate appearances and 147 games.

Wed Jan 25 202315:01Tigers, Cesar Hernandez Agree To Minor-League Deal
Per a tweet from The New York Post's Jon Heyman on Wednesday, veteran infielder Cesar Hernandez has reportedly agreed to a minor-league deal with the Detroit Tigers. Heyman tweeted the following on Wednesday: "Cesar Hernandez agrees to minors deal with Tigers. Invited to MLB camp." Hernandez hit .248 in 617 plate appearances for the Washington Nationals last year, adding a home run and 10 stolen bases in the process. Capable of playing second base, third base, and left field he'll give the Tigers some additional infield depth heading into the 2023 season.

Tue Mar 15 202214:03Cesar Hernandez Could Bat Leadoff
Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez said he'd love for second baseman Cesar Hernandez to be his leadoff hitter this season. It would be a curious placement for the 31-year-old switch-hitter, who had a .308 on-base percentage in 637 plate appearances with the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox in 2021. Hernandez has gotten on base at a .345 slip in his nine seasons in the big leagues, but he hasn't run much since 2018 -- just 11 stolen bases in the last three years. He had a career-high 21 long balls and drove in 62 last year, and a move to the top of the order in front of Juan Soto, Josh Bell and Nelson Cruz would certainly be a boost to his modest fantasy appeal.

Tue Nov 30 202121:43Cesar Hernandez Heading To The Nationals
The Washington Nationals are signing free-agent second baseman Cesar Hernandez to a one-year, $4 million deal on Tuesday evening. The deal will include $1 million in incentives. Hernandez became a free agent when the Chicago White Sox didn't pick up his $6 million option for the 2022 season. The switch-hitting second baseman had just a .299 slugging percentage after being acquired in a trade from Cleveland. In total, the 31-year-old hit just .232/.309/.299 in 53 games for the White Sox with three home runs and 15 RBI in 217 plate appearances. Hernandez totaled a career-high 21 home runs, 62 RBI and 84 runs scored in 149 total games with Cleveland and Chicago, though, and he'll provide some solid pop at the keystone for the Nats next season.

Fri Nov 5 202112:47Cesar Hernandez Has Option Declined By White Sox
Chicago White Sox second baseman Cesar Hernandez will become a free agent after the club declined its $6 million dollar option on him. Hernandez hit a career-high 21 homers this past season, but slashed a mediocre .232/.308/.386 in 570 at-bats for both Chicago and Cleveland. This represented a major step back for Hernandez in overall production, as he managed a .753 OPS over his previous five seasons combined. Should Hernandez manage to find a starting role this offseason, he could be a bargain for fantasy managers, especially in categories leagues where he's a sneaky target for runs scored.

It'll be Leury Garcia starting at second instead and batting ninth on Thursday. Sat Sep 18 202115:57Cesar Hernandez Isn't In The Lineup On Saturday
Chicago White Sox second baseman is on the bench for Saturday's matchup with the Texas Rangers. The White Sox will take on right-handed starter Spencer Howard but will do so without Hernandez in the lineup. Sun Sep 5 202112:24Cesar Hernandez Will Rest On Sunday
Chicago White Sox second baseman Cesar Hernandez will rest on Sunday versus the Kansas City Royals. Hernandez was acquired before the trade deadline, but has struggled in his short tenure with the White Sox. Hernandez is hitting .208 with three home runs and five RBI in 120 at-bats for the Pale Hose and overall is hitting .226 with 21 home runs and 52 RBI. Managers can feel confident swapping him out for someone doing better on the waiver wire. Infielder Danny Mendick will replace the veteran on Sunday and bat eighth versus Brady Singer. Mendick is a dart throw in DFS for Sunday's slate.

Fri Aug 27 202108:31Cesar Hernandez Hits 21st Home Run
Chicago White Sox second baseman Cesar Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's victory versus the Toronto Blue Jays. Hernandez took Hyun-Jin Ryu deep in the top of the second inning to tie the game 1-1 at the time. The veteran came over from the Cleveland Indians prior to the trade deadline, but has struggled with his new club and was recently demoted from the No. 2 spot in the batting order to the bottom half of the order. With the White Sox, Hernandez is hitting .221 with three home runs, five RBI and one stolen base in 95 at-bats. For the season, he is hitting .229 with 21 home runs, 52 RBI and one stolen base. Hernandez will help managers with power, but he hasn't offered much value outside of that.

For the season, Hernandez is now hitting .240 with 20 home runs and 50 RBI. Hernandez has homered in consecutive games and should be rostered in all formats.

For the season, Hernandez is hitting .237 with 19 home runs and 49 RBI. Hernandez should continue to be a solid contributor in all formats moving forward.

Fri Jul 30 202122:25Indians acquire OF Straw from Astros for RHP Maton
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Indians made another trade just before the deadline Friday, sending reliever Phil Maton to the AL West-leading Houston Astros for outfielder Myles Straw. Cleveland, which dealt second baseman Cesar Hernandez and outfielder Eddie Rosario in separate trades, also sent catcher Yainer Diaz to Houston for the speedy Straw, who will fill an open outfield spot for the remainder of this season — and maybe beyond. Maton has been used in a setup role this season, his third with the Indians. The 28-year-old right-hander was 2-0 with a 4.57 ERA in 38 appearances. The 26-year-old Straw batted .262 with two homers and 34 RBIs in 98 games for the Astros. He has also scored 44 runs and is currently tied second in the AL with 17 steals in 22 attempts. Straw has also played well defensively, without an error over 96 games in center field. A right-handed hitter, Straw was drafted in the 12th round by Houston in 2015. When asked about whether he wished the Astros kept Straw, manager Dusty Baker said: “I can’t answer that. I don’t think that’s anybody’s business. I’m not the decision maker, so sometimes you have to do what the organization asks. Sometimes you don’t have a choice.” ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Fri Jul 30 202119:05White Sox get closer Kimbrel from Cubs for Madrigal, Heuer
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox acquired closer Craig Kimbrel from the crosstown Cubs on Friday, a move that should give the AL Central leaders a fearsome bullpen for their playoff push. The White Sox already had one of baseball's best closers in All-Star Liam Hendriks. Now the South Siders add Kimbrel, who has a 0.49 ERA and 23 saves in 25 opportunities for the Cubs this season and leads NL relievers in strikeout rate and opponents' batting average. Kimbrel ranks ninth with 371 career saves during his 12 years in the majors. White Sox manager Tony La Russa said he had a plan for how to use both closers, but was not ready to divulge specifics. “On any given day, one may be available, the other one may not be,” general manager Rick Hahn said. “It puts us in a position where we have a very dynamic and impactful bullpen regardless of the situation that arises in each game.” The White Sox paid quite a price to get Kimbrel: They sent second baseman Nick Madrigal, a budding star who is out... Fri Jul 30 202118:25Busy at deadline, Indians trade OF Eddie Rosario to Braves
CLEVELAND (AP) — Eddie Rosario had moments for the Indians. Not nearly enough of them. Reshuffling its roster with an eye toward the future with several deals before the trading deadline Friday, Cleveland traded Rosario to the Atlanta Braves, who needed another quality hitter to make a run for the NL East. The Indians got veteran infielder Pablo Sandoval, and immediately released the 2012 Wold Series MVP. It was Cleveland's second significant trade in two days. On Thursday, the Indians essentially signaled surrender in the AL Central by dealing second baseman Cesar Hernandez to the first-place White Sox for a minor league pitcher. The Indians made two other smaller deals on Friday. Rosario signed a one-year, $8 million free agent contract this winter with the Indians. They were hoping the outfielder would hit for them the way he did with the Minnesota Twins, but Rosario was injured and never got rolling. The 29-year-old Rosario has been on the injured list since July 6 with an oblique strain,... [More]
Fri Jul 30 202117:55Indians get LHP Battenfield from Rays for Luplow, Johnson
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Indians capped a whirlwind few hours before the trading deadline Friday by sending outfielder Jordan Luplow and right-hander DJ Johnson to the Tampa Bay Rays for minor league pitcher Peyton Battenfield. It was Cleveland's third trade of the day and fourth in 24 hours after they sent second baseman Cesar Hernandez to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. The Indians view Battenfield as a potential long-term starter. The 23-year-old split this season between High-A and Double-A, going 5-0 with a 2.14 ERA in 14 games. He'll report to Double-A Akron. Luplow has been on the injured list since May 28 with a sprained left ankle. He initially got hurt while working out in Arizona before camp opened. The 27-year-old was batting .173 with seven homers and 20 RBIs in 36 games. Johnson spent most of the season at Triple-A Columbus, going 1-2 with six saves and a 3.32 ERA in 21 relief appearances. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

The White Sox paid quite a price to get him: They sent second baseman Nick Madrigal, a budding star who is out for the season with a torn right hamstring, to the Cubs along with right-handed reliever Codi Heuer. “We viewed Craig as the premier relief pitcher available at this trade deadline, and so we knew the cost would be steep in terms of parting with young talent,” White sox general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement. “But we recognize the special opportunity... Fri Jul 30 202114:25Indians trade OF Rosario to Braves for Sandoval
CLEVELAND (AP) — With the NL East still up for grabs, the Atlanta Braves needed another quality hitter for the season's second half. The Indians had one to offer. Cleveland made its second significant trade in two days, sending outfielder Eddie Rosario to the Braves for infielder Pablo Sandoval on Friday. Rosario signed a one-year, $8 million free agent contract this winter with the Indians, who essentially signaled surrender in the AL Central on Thursday by dealing second baseman Cesar Hernandez to the first-place White Sox for a minor league pitcher. The Braves will pay a portion of Rosario's contract, easing the financial burden on the Indians, who have been ravaged by injuries and are quickly fading from the playoff chase. Atlanta's been in the market to bolster its lineup since losing its best player when All-Star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. suffered a season-ending knee injury while trying to make a leaping catch earlier this month. The Braves also acquired outfielder Adam Duvall... [More]
