He is expected to miss all of 2018 while recovering from the operation. De La Rosa, 28, is unsigned beyond this year and is a candidate to be non-tendered this winter.

RHP Rubby De La Rosa will undergo a second Tommy John surgery, Arizona manager Torey Lovullo announced prior to Thursday's afternoon game against the Houston Astros. De La Rosa will need the surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The 28-year-old had his initial surgery performed in 2011 near the tail end of his rookie season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. De La Rosa posted an 0-1 mark with a 4.70 ERA in nine appearances (7 2/3 innings) with the Diamondbacks this season. "It was nice to see."

"He's going to have some more outings and is going to continue to gain strength and endurance," manager Tory Lovullo said. De La Rosa signed a minor league contract in the offseason and would be a candidate to be added to the parent team if bullpen help is needed. "He needs to continue to go and perform. He's in a very good place."

Following rest and rehab, he returned to the mound for two appearances in September but felt tightness again, causing him to sit out the final two weeks. If rest and recovery this winter do not help, a second Tommy John operation is an option.

RHP Ruby De La Rosa's arm problems was one of the disappointing aspects of the Diamondbacks' pitching staff. The Diamondbacks will have to decide whether to keep trying him as a starting pitcher or put him in the bullpen. He could get a shot at the closer role. "We have to figure out where this arm is going to go and where he's going to fit into the club next year," manager Chip Hale.
