Carpenter was designated for assignment by the Red Sox earlier Tuesday, and the Cubs could claim him on waivers if Boston doesn't trade him first. The hard-throwing right-hander has put up a 5.17 ERA over 18 appearances the last two seasons with the Cubs and Red Sox.
