RHP Scott Carroll was acquired by the Rangers from the White Sox in a cash transaction Wednesday. Carroll, 31, had no decisions and an 11.57 ERA in three relief appearances for Chicago this year. He was 2-8 with a 5.55 ERA in 16 games (12 starts) for Triple-A Charlotte.

Carroll was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.

Carroll has split the season between Chicago and Charlotte, appearing in 13 games for the White Sox and posting a 3.41 ERA across 29 innings. With the Triple-A season over, he'll simply add depth to the bullpen over the final three weeks of the season.

Carroll was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte following Sunday's game.

Carroll most recently appeared in a game Sunday, where he allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits. It was the first time he's pitched for the White Sox since prior to the All-Star break. He'll now head back to the minors, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the White Sox look his way again if the need for bullpen depth arises.

Carroll was called up by the White Sox on Saturday, Doug Padilla of ESPN reports.

Carroll is taking the roster spot of outfielder J.B. Shuck (hamstring) who's headed for the 15-day disabled list. Since the White Sox are a bit short handed with outfield replacements, Carroll will likely head back to Triple-A once Shuck returns to health, unless Carroll proves he can perform batter than his previous 12 MLB appearances this season where he accrued a 3.28 ERA.

Carroll has made 12 appearances for the White Sox this season, going 1-1 with a 3.28 ERA and 1.541 WHIP across 24.2 innings. He'll head back to Triple-A, where he's 3-2 as a starter this season. The team is expected to announce a corresponding move Friday.

Carroll was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday.

Caroll will take the spot of right-hander Hector Noesi, who was DFA'd by the team on Thursday. In eight appearances for the Sox this season, Carroll has amassed a 3.12 ERA with seven strikeouts and seven walks across 17.1 total innings. He holds a tidy 2.37 ERA in six starts at Triple-A.

Carroll figures to work in long relief for the White Sox initially, but he could be thrust into the rotation on a short-term basis if either or both of Chris Sale and Jeff Samardzija fail to win their appeals of five-game suspensions. Regardless of which capacity the White Sox use him, Carroll isn't likely to deliver much value, as he tallied an ugly 4.80 ERA and 1.48 WHIP to go along with just 64 strikeouts in 129.1 innings with the big club last season.

Carroll was reassigned to minor league camp Thursday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.

Carroll entered camp with an outside chance to earn a rotation spot, and he did fare reasonably well in his five spring appearances with the major league team (2 earned runs, six strikeouts in 11.1 innings), but the team has decided to go with Hector Noesi as its fifth starter for now. The 30-year-old Carroll went 5-10 with a 4.80 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 129.1 innings with the big club last season, but will likely be on the short list of in-season replacement options (along with Brad Penny), at least in the early going.

Pitching coach Don Cooper said Carroll should pitch more innings this spring in the wake of Chris Sale's foot injury, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The White Sox may not only need someone to take Sale's first few regular season starts, but they will need arms to eat his anticipated spring innings. Of the four guys expected to consume some of those innings, Carroll has the most experience within the organization. He could conceivably crack the MLB roster as a spot starter with a strong spring.

Carroll re-signed with the White Sox on a minor-league contract. The deal includes an invite to spring training.

Carroll was non-tendered by the White Sox in December after submitting an unimpressive 4.80 ERA and 64:45 K:BB ratio over 129.1 innings. The back end of Chicago's rotation was among the weakest in baseball last season, so it comes as no surprise that Carroll received mild interest on the free agency market. With no team willing to give him a major-league contract, he'll return to the White Sox as an NRI. It will probably take an avalanche of injuries for Carroll to finish with anywhere close to the 19 starts he made for the team a season ago.

Five players were tendered contracts by the White Sox, but Carroll and Scott Snodgress were not among them. After toiling in the minors for eight seasons, Carroll finally broke through to the majors in 2014, but the results in his 26 appearances (19 starts) weren't pretty (4.80 ERA, 1.48 WHIP). He's averaged just 5.4 K/9 in the minors and may have to settle for a minor league deal with a spring training invite.

Carroll was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Tuesday.

Carroll's spot on the 40-man roster was needed in order to make Friday's signing of first baseman Adam LaRoche official. Carrol was 5-10 with a 4.80 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in 2014, and may garner interest from another team on waivers looking for another bullpen candidate or back-end starter.

Carroll ended up with a no-decision Tuesday against the Tigers, tossing six innings of five-hit, two-run ball while walking two and striking out four.

Carroll matched goose eggs with Detroit's David Price until the fifth inning when a single, stolen base and a throwing error broke a 0-0 tie. In 19 starts this season, the rookie righty pitched to a 4.84 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, terrible 43:59 BB:K and a 5-10 record in 126.1 innings.

Carroll will have his start over the weekend against Tampa Bay skipped while he remains bothered by a torn fingernail, CSN Chicago's Dan Hayes reports.

The White Sox haven't elected to shut down Carroll at this point, but it might make sense at this point, given that there's less than two weeks remaining in the season. Even when he was healthy enough to pitch, Carroll didn't demonstrate that he should merit a rotation spot for 2015. He's carrying a 5.01 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and a terrible 55:41 K:BB ratio over 120.1 innings.

Carroll (finger) is expected to make his next scheduled start, Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com reports.

A torn fingernail resulted in an abbreviated outing for Carroll his last time out, but team trainer Herm Schneider thinks the right-hander will be fine to toe the rubber this weekend against Tampa. Carroll held the Rays to one earned run on six hits over 7.1 innings in his first start of the season (Apr. 27).

The origin of Carroll's injury hasn't been clarified as of yet, but he is currently considered day-to-day. Daniel Webb replaced him on the mound.
