The Cleveland Guardians agreed to re-sign left-hander Anthony Gose (elbow) to a two-year minor-league deal on Thursday, according to sources. Gose continues to rehab after having Tommy John surgery in September, and he will not be able to play at all in 2023. The deal pays him $1 million per season if he's in the big leagues. The 32-year-old former outfielder went 3-0 for the Guardians in 2022 and posted a 4.71 ERA (5.06 FIP), a 1.38 WHIP, 28 strikeouts and 14 walks in 21 innings pitched in the big leagues over 22 relief appearances. He's obviously well off the fantasy radar and won't even pitch for Cleveland next season.

The Houston Astros received a positive update on left-hander Framber Valdez on the same day Forrest Whitley had season-ending surgery on his right elbow. Valdez met with Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles on Wednesday, and new images of the pitcher's fractured left ring finger showed significant healing, according to the team. Valdez is expected to continue his rehab at the team's facility in Florida, and there is no timetable yet for his return to the mound. The 27-year-old Valdez went 5-3 with a 3.57 ERA in 11 games last year, including 10 starts. He got hurt when struck by a comebacker while pitching against the Mets on March 2. LHP Anthony Gose made his professional pitching debut on Monday night for Class A Lakeland, allowing one run, one hit and one walk with one strikeout. Gose, who last pitched in high school, logged 372 games in five seasons as a center fielder with Detroit and Toronto before initiating the position change this spring. He faced five batters, touched 99 mph with his fastball and also mixed in a few curveballs and one changeup.

The steal was his 20th, marking the first time he's reached that milestone. Gose has rattled off five hits and scored four runs in the last three games, but with a 31:111 BB:K, an average that's been lingering in the .250s (and it's only that high because of a season-opening hot streak), and a poor success rate on the basepaths (he's been caught 10 times), there are quite a few aspects of his game that need work.

Gose went 1-for-3 Saturday against the Jays, but his embarrassing defensive gaffe in the fourth inning put the Jays up 6-1.

This guy will never fulfill his potential if he cannot think the game. And so far, he's given no-one the indication he can do that. With one out in the fourth, Gose caught Josh Donaldson's fly ball to the warning track. He thought it was the third out and started nonchalantly jogging in with the ball. Ryan Goins was on second and he booted it all the way home. It wasn't even classed an error and his manager Brad Ausmus could only mutter, "There's really nothing you can say to him; he knows he screwed up."

Gose is out of the lineup Sunday against the Rangers.

Gose has been finding himself in the lineup more frequently against lefty pitching, albeit at the bottom of the order, but manager Brad Ausmus will sit the outfielder against southpaw Cole Hamels after he went 0-for-7 with five strikeouts in the first three games of the series. Rajai Davis will earn the starting nod in center field while Gose remains on the bench.

Gose went 2-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and three runs against the Cubs on Wednesday.

It looks like Gose is going to miss Wrigley Field after going 5-for-11 with a double, a triple, a homer, three RBI and six runs over this week's two-game series against the Cubs. With the way he's slumped since the start of June, it's hard to expect much from Gose, though he's usable for his speed contributions in deep and AL-only formats.

Gose, who was hitting .304 on June 4, is now hitting .252 and has gone 13-for-82 (.159) over the last month.

He has struck out 27 times in that span (once every three at bats). He showed tremendous promise the first couple months of the season, but has become the player he's always been. And at this point in his career, we can't help but wonder if he's a case of what you see is what you get. He's certainly stuck at this point and that doesn't make him viable in most fantasy formats.

Gose was a late addition to the lineup Friday against the Orioles.

Gose was initially out of the lineup Friday, but the late trade of Yoenis Cespedes changed things, pushing Rajai Davis over to left field and opening center field for Gose. A report indicated that Davis will split duties in left field with Tyler Collins, which could result in added starts for Gose moving forward.

Gose returns to the lineup Monday, batting ninth and playing center field against the Rays.

With Rajai Davis a candidate to be moved before the game starts, Gose returns to the starting lineup after being held out of the last two games. He's hitting .274 on the season with 14 stolen bases and four triples.
