PITTSBURGH (AP) — An unexpected break didn't stop the steady stream of pitchers to the injured list for the Pittsburgh Pirates.The team placed opening day starter Joe Musgrove on the 10-day IL Tuesday with what manager Derek Shelton called a right triceps issue. The Pirates scratched Musgrove (0-3, 6.75 ERA) before Sunday's start against Detroit with what Shelton called an ankle injury.Musgrove is the sixth Pittsburgh pitcher to be placed on the injured list this season. The list includes starter Mitch Keller and relievers Nick Burdi, Clay Holmes, Michael Feliz and Kyle Crick. It doesn't include closer Keone Kela, who has yet to pitch this season after testing positive for COVID-19. RHP Henderson Alvarez gave up three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, struggling to find his command and walking six batters, failing to record a strikeout. Alvarez finishes his 2017 campaign with an 0-2 record and a 4.30 ERA in three starts.

RHP Henderson Alvarez pitched five shutout innings, but failed to earn his first victory in three years when the bullpen failed to hold the lead. Alvarez was seeking his first major-league win since Sept. 23, 2014, when he beat the Phillies while a member of the Miami Marlins. The veteran right-hander pitched five shutout innings in his second start since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

RHP Henderson Alvarez had been sidelined since early 2015 by a pair of shoulder surgeries and may be auditioning for a chance to join the Philadelphia rotation next year. He started against Oakland on Sept. 17 and pitched five innings, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks, with four strikeouts. He faces Atlanta Saturday and the Braves have had good luck against him over the years. The right-hander has made eight starts in Atlanta and gone 1-4 with a 5.70 ERA.
