Joe Nelson, who was designated for assignment on Friday, said he may retire should he clear waivers.
"I'll be going to the beach with my kids and the wife and trying to be a real dad for a couple of days," said Nelson. "I'm sure Monday I'll pick up a baseball and throw it around, but for the next couple of days I'm going to enjoy life and not being a baseball player for a couple of days." Nelson posted a 9.72 ERA over eight appearances with the Red Sox.

Nelson surrendered nine runs in 8 1/3 innings for the Red Sox. He can still get strikeouts with his changeup, but his fastball is below average and his command has been awful the last couple of years.

Red Sox purchased the contract of RHP Joe Nelson from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Nelson was signed to a minor league contract by the club in February and posted a 2.49 ERA over his first 16 relief appearances with the PawSox. The 35-year-old right-hander tallied a 4.02 ERA over 42 appearances with the Rays last season. He'll contribute in middle relief.
