The Rangers agreed to trade Choice to the Indians on Friday, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.

A roster casualty with Will Venable's acquisition from San Diego, Choice has landed on the Tribe's 40-man roster despite a poor showing at the Triple-A level this season (.244/.309/.399). Choice was the 10th overall pick in 2010, but two organizations have now given up on him and he will have to step up his performance with Cleveland to avoid the Quad-A label.

Choice was designated for assignment Tuesday.

The move opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for Will Venable, whom the Rangers acquired in a trade Tuesday. Choice has plus raw power but the evidence that he has a below-average hit tool is mounting to the point where the Rangers viewed him as expendable.

The Rangers optioned Choice to Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday, Rangers VP of Comm. John Blake reports.

Choice was brought up Wednesday to provide some outfield depth, but the Rangers decided to send him back down and call up pitcher Spencer Patton with two relievers likely unavailable Thursday night. Choice figures to be an option for the big club again later this season.

The 25-year-old hasn't exactly raked at Round Rock so far this season (.242/.299/.404), but he will be up to provide some security outfield depth with Shin-Soo Choo dealing with a back issue. Choice, a former first-round pick (10th overall in 2010), hit nine homers in 86 games with Texas last year, yet he managed just a .320 slugging percentage and he struck out close to a quarter of the time. He could head back down when Josh Hamilton (hamstring) is ready to go.

Developmentally, this is probably the best course of action for Choice. While he was in contention to see starts in left field, he may just not be ready to handle big league pitching yet. Choice, 25, hit .182 (.208 BABIP) with nine homers in 280 plate appearances for the Rangers last season. The power is legit, and it would not be surprising to see Choice get called up in May or June and face lefties on a regular basis.

Choice is on the long list of candidates competing for the Rangers' starting left field job this spring, the team's official site reports.

The Rangers acquired Choice from the A's last offseason with the hope that he would become an everyday outfielder. He struggled with the big club in an extended opportunity last season (.182/.250/.320, nine homers), but has continually flashed the ability to hit Triple-A pitching including a .267/.379/.460 line over 43 games at Round Rock last season.

The injury occurred in Sunday's game while Choice was legging out a double. Jake Smolinski will likely pick up the extra playing time in Choice's absence over the final 13 games of the season.

Choice left Sunday's game with a strained left hamstring and will undergo an MRI on Monday.

Choice was 2-for-3 with three RBI prior to exiting. He was replaced in right field by Daniel Robertson. More will be known following Monday's MRI, but at this point it seems unlikely he plays Tuesday in Oakland.

Choice is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Royals.

Aside from a three-hit outburst last week against the Astros, Choice has struggled upon returning to the Rangers, producing one hit across his other 19 at-bats. He'll sit for the second consecutive day.

Ryan Rua will move out to left field Tuesday, pushing Choice to the bench after seven consecutive starts. Choice continues to struggle against major league pitching, but he's just 24 years old and the Rangers, in full evaluation mode, figure to give him ample playing time over the final weeks of the season.

After going 0-for-10 since being recalled from the minors at the beginning of the week, Choice turned things around Friday night. Though his rookie campaign has been largely disappointing so far, the 24-year-old outfielder has shown some pop this season and figures to see plenty of playing time during September.

Choice was able to demonstrate his power, hitting eight home runs in 69 games when he was up with the Rangers earlier this season. But he also posted a .177 average and a .247 OBP over that span, so any value from his pop may be mitigated by his inefficiencies as a hitter.

Getting the start in center field against left-hander Tyler Skaggs, Choice delivered for manager Ron Washington. Even more noteworthy was the fact that Choice's three-run home run, his second homer of the season, came off a right-hander, reliever Kevin Jepsen. Choice will likely continue to see the majority of his playing time against southpaws, but Sunday may go a ways toward showing Washington he can do some damage against right-handers as well.

It was a game-tying solo shot off Kevin Chapman in the bottom of the ninth inning. Choice entered the game as a pinch-hitter and isn't getting enough playing time at this point to carry relevance in fantasy leagues.
