Wed Jul 4 201200:35Below hurt by Tigers defense in spot start
Duane Below pitched fairly well in a brief outing against the Twins on Tuesday evening, surrendering five runs (one earned) on five hits over 2 2/3 innings.
As has often been the case with the Tigers this season, the brutal defense behind Below played a major role in the outcome of the game. Ramon Santiago booted a simple ground ball in the third inning which extended the frame, allowing Josh Willingham to come to the plate and bash a three-run homer. Below did manage to strike out three without issuing a walk, but he's unlikely to see another start and is mostly irrelevant in fantasy leagues.

Mon Apr 23 201208:46Below not in line for a start
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Sunday that Duane Below is not under consideration for a future start.
Below looked impressive in the first half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rangers, allowing only four singles across six scoreless innings. "Because he's done good in the bullpen, everybody wants to know if I'm going to start him right now," said Leyland. "And the answer to that is no -- emphatically no right now."

Sun Mar 25 201217:18Duane Below goes 3 2/3 innings in start
Duane Below had his longest outing of the spring Sunday, allowing one run in 3 2/3 innings against the Yankees.
It didn't look like Below was being taken very seriously as a fifth starter candidate when he pitched two innings last Sunday and just one in his last appearance Wednesday, but he got stretched out a bit today. The 26-year-old wouldn't project as much of a starter for the Tigers, but he might be a safer choice than Andrew Oliver or Drew Smyly.

Fri Feb 24 201208:23Below the favorite over Turner for No. 5 job?
Lynn Henning of the Detroit News considers Duane Below the favorite to win the final spot in the Tigers rotation.
Henning has Below in the driver's seat, followed by Adam Wilk, Jacob Turner and Drew Smyly. He's simply basing it on age, though, as Below is the elder statesman of the group at 26. We're doubtful that's the main criteria Detroit will use, and Below might have the least amount of upside of anyone in the group. Turner, who most assumed was the front-runner for job, is certainly the most talented, but he's just 20 and the Tigers could choose to give him some more seasoning.

The 25-year-old had a 3.13 ERA and 87/37 K/BB ratio over 115 innings at the Triple-A level this season, but he's found success more difficult to find in the bigs. He'll take on the Angels this weekend.
