Gomes allowed one hit over a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday against the Yankees en route to his first save of the season.

Brad Boxberger had pitched on back-to-back days and three of the last four days prior to Tuesday's game, so he was likely unavailable. Boxberger has been pretty bad down the stretch, posting a 4.79 ERA over the second half, so it would not be surprising if the Rays opted for a closer-by-committee approach over the final weeks of the season, meaning Gomes could be called upon again.

Gomes registered a 3.68 ERA and 1.295 WHIP in 29.1 innings pitched during the first half of the 2015 season.

The 30-year-old has been at least a slightly above-average pitcher since the start of the 2014 season with Tampa Bay, with a 104 ERA+ in 63.1 innings. The Rays' bullpen remains extremely crowded at the top though, so it's unlikely Gomes advances above his current 6-7th inning role.

Gomes has looked sharp so far in 2015, putting up a 1.93 ERA and 1.071 WHIP across 14 innings.

As well as Gomes has pitched, the Rays are unlikely to use him in a high-leverage role anytime soon. His stuff (8.4 K/9, 1.9 BB/9) has been impressive enough, but Tampa Bay has used too many other pitchers in the ninth inning to reasonably think he has a shot at a job with real fantasy value.

Gomes has a career .417 ERA in 108 innings of work. He will look to get a few innings out of the bullpen, but his exact role has not been determined.
