RHP Tom Wilhelmsen signed a minor league contract with Milwaukee Tuesday, as the organization looks for options to bolster a struggling bullpen. Wilhelmsen The Brewers' seventh-round pick in the 2002 draft, he posted a 2.97 ERA with 67 saves for the Mariners from 2011-2015 but was released by both Seattle and the Diamondbacks over the last six months.

RHP Tom Wilhelmsen, a spring training surprise who couldn't carry his strong March into the regular season, was designated for assignment on Sunday -- a move that Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo acknowledges was difficult to make because the 33-year-old Wilhelmsen made such a contribution to the team's chemistry. The right-hander, a Tucson native, was 1-1 with a 4.44 ERA in 27 games, walking 12 and giving up 25 hits in 26 1/3 innings. "In spring training, he was lights out ... but it didn't continue as consistently as we needed it to," Lovullo said Sunday. "The fastball was inconsistent, (there were) baserunners on base." Still, the first-year manager said the decision was very tough to make. "He's meant so much to this team, (he's) been a leader down in the bullpen. It was tough to let him go. There are concerns that a piece of the puzzle has been removed, but that's part of the game and what happens here (in the majors). ... It wasn't a great move chemistry-wise, but these guys will work through it. (But) these moments are hard when they happen."

Wilhelmsen, 32, is 0-1 with one save and a 3.20 ERA over 19 2/3 innings in 22 relief appearances this season. In parts of six major league season with Seattle and Texas, Wilhelmsen is 13-14 with 68 saves with a 3.44 ERA in 310 career games (two starts).

RHP Tom Wilhelmsen endured his worst outing since returning to the Mariners when he gave up two home runs and the game-winning hit in the top of the ninth inning of a 7-6 loss to Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon. "Tom Wilhelmsen has given us everything he's got this year," manager Scott Servais said. "It just wasn't his day." Wilhelmsen, who has worked as a Mariners' long reliever, middle reliever and setup man since being released by the Rangers, served as closer Sunday because Edwin Diaz was getting the day off. He ended up blowing the save and taking the loss after the one-third-of-an-inning effort.

RHP Tom Wilhelmsen might have gotten the biggest out of Saturday's game, even though he only faced one batter and it came in the sixth inning of a 12-6 win over Baltimore. Wilhelmsen came on for struggling starter James Paxton with the bases loaded and the Mariners leading 9-4, and he got the Orioles' Adam Jones to pop out to end the inning. RHP Tom Wilhelmsen, a 32-year-old reliever who has had already several stints with the Mariners in his career, was back in the bullpen Thursday after being summoned from Triple-A Tacoma. Wilhelmsen has appeared in 289 games with Seattle and is tied for fifth in the franchise's history with 67 career saves, but he has clearly seen better days. This season, in 22 games with the Rangers and Mariners, he has a 10.07 ERA, and opposing batters have a .386 batting average against him. Wilhelmsen was not used in Thursday's win over Baltimore.

"We just want to get him back to where he was just last year. It's not like we're far removed from Tom Wilhelmsen being a very good major league pitcher."

RHP Tom Wilhelmsen declined his assignment to Triple-A Round Rock Friday and has elected to become a free agent. Wilhelmsen, who was acquired in November via a trade with AL West rival Seattle, permitted 25 runs in 21 1/3 innings over two stints with the Rangers. With Wilhelmsen's decision, the team now has 39 players on its major league roster.
