Kyle McPherson underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a broken medial epicondyle in his right elbow.
McPherson was working his way back from Tommy John surgery when he apparently broke his elbow somehow. The Pirates were hoping to have him as an option around midseason, but he'll now miss all of the 2014 campaign.

McPherson underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery last July and will miss the first half of the 2014 regular season. The 26-year-old right-hander showed some promise in 2012 and should get a legit look in Pittsburgh sometime after the All-Star break.

Kyle McPherson (elbow) is hoping to be ready to throw off a mound at the start of spring training.
Working his way back from July Tommy John surgery, McPherson is currently soft-tossing and throwing from 120 feet. He expects to be ready to start throwing fastballs on flat ground later this week before progressing to mound work next month. The 26-year-old is hoping he can make an impact with the Pirates sometime after the All-Star break.

Pirates re-signed RHP Kyle McPherson to a minor league contract.
He also received a spring training invite. Earlier this winter, Pittsburgh designated McPherson for assignment and then released him. Having found the free market to be no more forgiving of a pitcher on the mend, McPherson returns home. McPherson underwent Tommy John surgery in July and won't be recovered until the middle of the 2014 season.

Kyle McPherson received an injection in his right elbow on Monday and will be shut down for the next two weeks.
He will be re-evaluated after the two weeks before the Pirates decide whether he's ready to resume throwing. McPherson probably would have made a spot start over the weekend in place of the injured Wandy Rodriguez had he been healthy.

With Wandy Rodriguez (hamstring) sidelined, McPherson was under consideration for a promotion, but he's apparently dealing with a forearm injury. It's another blow to the Pirates' pitching depth. Phil Irwin will be promoted to make a spot start Sunday against the Reds.

Pirates optioned RHP Kyle McPherson, INF Jordy Mercer and OF Alex Presley to Triple-A Indianapolis.
McPherson was competing for the final spot in the rotation, which was ultimately rewarded to Jeff Locke. Jeanmar Gomez got the final bullpen spot while Josh Harrison is the likely favorite to get the final bench spot assuming Brandon Inge (shoulder) opens the season on the disabled list.

Kyle McPherson was roughed up in Friday's loss to the Orioles, surrendering four runs on six hits over his three frames.
He walked one while punching out three on the night. Most of the damage came in the third inning, where the O's used three hits and a hit batsman to push across three runs. McPherson has posted a 9.39 ERA and 5/4 K/BB ratio through 7 2/3 innings this spring, all but assuring that he begins the season at Triple-A Indianapolis. He holds no fantasy value at the moment.

McPherson pitched well in limited action for the Pirates in 2012, and has his sights set on earning a spot in the Opening Day rotation. He's displayed impressive command at every minor league level, and could be worth a late-round flier should he lock down that final rotation spot.
