Varvaro (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Wednesday.

This was an inevitability with Varvaro undergoing season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right arm. He now faces a six-month rehabilitation process. Carlos Peguero, was claimed off waivers from Texas and will fill Varvaro's spot on the 40-man roster.

The Cubs returned Varvaro to the Red Sox on Sunday after he was diagnosed with a torn right flexor tendon in his elbow. The Red Sox placed Varvaro on the 15-day DL.

According to the Staten Island Advance, Varvaro will undergo surgery Tuesday to address the tear in his pitching arm, ending his season and voiding the Cubs' waiver claim of the right-hander back on May 3. Varvaro never logged an official appearance with the Cubs or any of their affiliates, so both teams concluded it would be appropriate to return the pitcher to Boston. The reliever is expected to require six months of rehabilitation after having surgery, putting him on track to resume throwing in November.

Varvaro made his regular-season debut for Boston, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings in Friday night's 19-inning win over the Yankees.

Varvaro was able to give Boston multiple outs on an night when every reliever got work. He's going to work in middle relief and has a history of being tough on left-handers.

Varvaro, a right hander, was summoned to face three left-handers. After striking out the first batter, he induced two weak groundball outs. Varvaro has a good career mark against lefties (.196 BAA) and that skill will be a factor when manager John Farrell finalizes his roster. Another factor favoring Varvaro making the team is his contract status -- he's out of minor-league options.

The Red Sox were surprised that Varvaro became available and jumped at the opportunity to get him after the Braves designated him for assignment. He's made 123 appearances the last two seasons and established enough of a record to show he can be a valuable middle reliever. Boston sees Varvaro slotting in behind the set up guys. He's out of minor-league options and is a serious contender for a spot on the roster.

Anthony Varvaro or Cristhian Martinez will likely be designated for assignment in order to make room for the newly-acquired Luis Ayala on the roster.

The Braves were nearly forced to make the same decision at the end of spring training, but both began the season in the bullpen after Jonny Venters (elbow) landed on the disabled list. Varvaro hasn't been as successful as Martinez in the big leagues, so he's likely the odd man out.

Mark Bowman of MLB.com writes that the Braves could trade either Anthony Varvaro or Cristian Martinez if Jordan Walden (back) is ready for the season.

If Walden is ready, there won't be room for both pitchers on the Opening Day roster. Varvaro and Martinez are out of options and likely wouldn't clear waivers, so the Braves could look to find a trade partner. Martinez, 31, is coming off a 3.91 ERA and 65/19 K/BB ratio over 73 2/3 innings last season. Varvaro hasn't enjoyed nearly the same success, posting a 4.43 ERA in 34 major league appearances, so he's more likely to end up elsewhere.
