Skipworth was once a blue-chip prospect, but washed out of the Marlins' farm system after hitting .216/.292/.407 at Triple-A last season. He had a brief callup at the big league level earlier this season but didn't play in a major league game. He's now hitting .262/.339/.551 in 34 games at Pensacola.

The Reds called Skipworth up earlier in the week for catcher depth with Devin Mesoraco nursing a hamstring injury, but Skipworth did not end up appearing in a game. Tucker Barnhart will take Skipworth's spot on the roster and his role as the third catcher, though Barnhart's stay may be short as Mesoraco is expected back at some point this weekend.

Skipworth was removed from the 40-man roster to make room for the newly signed Casey McGehee.

A first-round pick in 2008, Skipworth has an underwhelming .660 OPS over parts of five seasons in the minors, but did manage to hit 21 home runs at Double-A Jacksonville last season. With Jeff Mathis expected to miss at least six weeks due to injury, he could a candidate for the backup job behind Rob Brantly.

Skipworth is repeating the Sally League after hitting .208/.263/.348 in 264 at-bats last year. The sixth overall pick two years ago is still a very raw talent, but his power potential is intriguing. He's opened the year with five extra-base hits in his first 23 at-bats.
