Wed Apr 6 202222:02A.J. Ramos Announces Retirement
Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher A.J. Ramos announced his retirement from baseball on Wednesday. The nine-year veteran is hanging 'em up after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury during Spring Training. He has thrown just 7.1 innings since 2018, but earlier in his career, he posted three sub-2.85 ERAs and tallied 99 saves from 2015 to 2017. The former 21st-round pick of the Marlins defied the odds and earned an All-Star recognition in 2016. In addition to Miami and Los Angeles, he spent time in the majors with the Mets and Rockies.

Fri Mar 11 202222:29A.J. Ramos Agrees With Angels
The Los Angeles Angels agreed to a minor league deal with free-agent relief pitcher A.J. Ramos on Friday, according to a source. The deal includes an invite to major league camp. Ramos tossed 4 2/3 shutout innings of relief with the Halos in 2021 and will be battling for a spot in the Opening Day bullpen this spring. Ramos was an All-Star in 2016 with the Miami Marlins, but he hasn't had a save since 2017 and has played for four different teams in the last four seasons. The veteran right-hander has also pitched in only 6 2/3 major league innings in the last two seasons, and he didn't pitch at all in the big leagues in 2019.

Wed Jul 8 202022:19New center field backdrop has Dodgers hitters adjusting
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers were eager to show off $100 million worth of stadium renovations to fans and a national audience at the All-Star Game this summer. Turns out, it appears only players are going to see the changes up close this season because of the coronavirus pandemic, which will keep the public out of the ballpark for at least the early portion of a 60-game schedule that begins July 23. The Dodgers won't host the All-Star festivities until 2022.The black tarp that served as the backdrop in center field is gone, replaced by a new center field plaza that may take some getting used to for hitters.First baseman Max Muncy was hit by a pitch on his left ring finger during the team's intrasquad game Tuesday. “I couldn’t really see the ball,” he said Wednesday on a video conference call. “I’m trying to adjust to some of the changes out there.”Muncy said he’ll stop swinging a bat while his finger heals, but he expects to be ready for opening day.The new batter's eye has... Mon Jul 6 202022:08Betts: Baseball didn't do good job with response to Floyd
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mookie Betts wasn’t moved by Major League Baseball’s response in the wake of George Floyd’s death in police custody, and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ newest star has a goal of getting the Black community to love baseball as much as he does.MLB released a statement nine days after the death of Floyd, the Black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed a knee into his neck for several minutes on May 25. MLB was the last of the major pro sports leagues that either responded to Floyd's death or condemned racism. “I think baseball did not do a good job with that, but voices were heard,” Betts said Monday on a video conference call with reporters. “That’s the main thing, that we get our voices heard to make some changes. I know it’s not all going to be at one time, but a little change here, a change there, we’ll eventually get to where we need to be.”Betts said his goal of bringing baseball into Black communities is “more of a personal thing.” The percentage... Tue May 29 201823:25Mets put Syndergaard on DL, Matz also injures finger
ATLANTA (AP) — On another day of injuries in another season filled with them, the New York Mets were trying to put their finger on the latest problem.A pair of finger injuries sent Noah Syndergaard to the disabled list and knocked Steven Matz out of his start against the Atlanta Braves after just three innings Tuesday.Syndergaard was placed on the 10-day DL before the game with a sore right index finger, though the Mets are hopeful the right-hander will only miss one start. Then, in an almost surreal development for the injury-plagued team, Matz exited with discomfort in the middle finger of his left hand. Leading 4-0, he went out to warm up for the fourth inning but suddenly stopped throwing and began looking at his pitching hand.New York manager Mickey Callaway and a trainer popped out of the dugout to examine Matz. The pitcher flexed the finger a bit before heading slowly to the dugout, his night over after just 42 pitches. He allowed only one hit, walked two and struck out two.Three... [More]
Tue May 29 201818:45Mets place Syndergaard (finger) on 10-day disabled list
ATLANTA (AP) — Noah Syndergaard has joined the New York Mets' long list of ailing players. The right-hander was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with a sore right index finger, though the Mets are hopeful he will only miss one start. After traveling with the team to Atlanta, Syndergaard returned to New York to be examined at The Hospital for Special Surgery. An MRI and examination confirmed a strained ligament.Manager Mickey Callaway said the injury is not considered serious. If all goes according to plan, Syndergaard would throw a bullpen session this weekend and return to the rotation next week.Syndergaard was scheduled to pitch Wednesday in the series finale against the Braves. Jason Vargas will move up to make the start after three days of rest after lasting only three innings in his last appearance at Milwaukee on Saturday.Vargas is 1-3 with a 10.62 ERA in five starts this season. He has surrendered 34 hits, including six homers, and walked 10 in 20 1-3 innings.Syndergaard... [More]
Sun May 27 201814:05Struggling Mets RHP AJ Ramos to get shoulder checked out
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Right shoulder tightness might be a reason behind New York Mets reliever AJ Ramos' recent struggles.Ramos traveled back to New York on Sunday to be seen by a doctor. The right-hander told the club about the tightness after allowing three runs and three hits while getting just two outs in a 17-6 loss Saturday to the Milwaukee Brewers, assistant general manager John Ricco said.Ramos has given up eight runs in his last 4 2/3 innings. He also walked consecutive batters in a 4-3 loss to Milwaukee in 10 innings on Friday, skipping a 3-1 fastball into the dirt to force in the winning run."He's struggling throwing the ball where he (wants) to, that's the first sign something's going on with somebody. We were wondering if that might be the case," manager Mickey Callaway said.A former All-Star acquired at the trade deadline last year from the Miami Marlins, Ramos was expected to play a key role again in the back end of the Mets' bullpen.Instead, his struggles have contributed to... Mon Feb 12 201815:24Odd couple: Stanton, Ramos as NY roomies in house divided?
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — Talk about a house divided.Giancarlo Stanton and AJ Ramos, former teammates with the Miami Marlins and still close friends, are looking into living together this season now that both play in New York. It would seem to be a convenient arrangement, with one on the road most of the time anyway — except when Stanton and the Yankees face Ramos and the Mets in the Subway Series."I'm going to be setting some traps for him. You know, might mess up his sleep a little bit, stuff like that," Ramos said. "But no, we're still looking. Nothing set in stone just yet."At spring training Monday, the Mets' reliever was asked how you split a grocery bill with a roommate who has a $325 million contract?"Oh, he buys it all. For sure," Ramos said with a smile. "I'm just playin'. Nah, it's good times, man."Ramos, a 2016 All-Star, was traded by the Marlins to the Mets last July. Stanton was dealt to the Yankees in December as part of Miami's payroll purge under new ownership. The 6-foot-6, 245-pound Stanton socked 59 home runs last year, most by a major leaguer since 2001, and won the NL MVP award. Now he moves from cavernous Marlins Park into hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium, with its familiar short porch in right field."I mean, he can get jammed and hit a ball out there. That park is very small," Ramos said. "He can basically burp a ball out. So I think he's gonna do pretty good."___More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball
