Thayer cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A El Paso.

The right-hander was DFA'd on August 11, despite recording his sixth hold of the season the day prior. Thayer, who holds a 4.06 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 37.2 major league innings this season, will head to El Paso, where he'll hope to pitch well enough to warrant a return to the big leagues when rosters expand at the end of the month.

Thayer was designated for assignment by the Padres on Tuesday.

The right-hander earned his sixth hold Monday with a scoreless frame against Cincinnati, but it wasn't enough to save his spot on the 40-man roster. He was bumped Tuesday, along with infielder Taylor Lindsey, with the team needing to make room for Colin Rea and Bud Norris. Thayer has posted a 4.06 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 25:15 K:BB in 37.2 innings this season.

A shoulder strain in his throwing shoulder landed Thayer on the disabled list on June 17. He has ramped up his activity, including a bullpen session Tuesday, and has now come off the disabled list. The Padres optioned lefty reliever Frank Garces to clear room on the roster for Thayer.

Physically, he'll be good to go, but the team may still choose to have him see a few more batters in the minors to shake the rust off.

Regression seems inevitable, however, as Thayer benefited from a .250 BABIP and 89.0% strand rate last season. He's also not in the mix for saves, so there's no much to like from a fantasy perspective.

Thayer secured his fourth win of the season Wednesday against the Brewers, striking out one and inducing two groundouts while working the 10th inning.

Closer Joaquin Benoit wasn't exactly overworked entering action Wednesday -- he logged two one-inning outings in the preceding three tilts -- but manager Bud Black may keep Benoit's workload in check after he missed nearly two weeks this month due to a sore shoulder. While Kevin Quackenbush handled the ninth, Thayer was afforded a late-game chance after Rene Rivera's solo shot in the bottom of frame resulted in extra baseball. With Quackenbush assuming setup duty, expect most of Thayer's opportunities to occur in the seventh inning for the remainder of the year.
