2B Cole Figueroa was assigned outright to Triple-A New Orleans.

INF Cole Figueroa was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Friday. Figueroa, 29, appeared in 23 games earlier this season for Pittsburgh, batting .154 and knocking in three runs before the Dodgers picked him up off waivers on June 28. Miami signed him in mid-July, and he hit .130 (3-for-23) in 10 games for Triple-A New Orleans.

INF Cole Figueroa was optioned to Indianapolis on Monday to make room on the 25-man roster when 1B Jason Rogers was recalled. Rookie Figueroa was hitless in nine at-bats this season. "As we came out of the chute, the starting reps just weren't there, based on what we wanted to do with the principals we had in place," manager Clint Hurdle said. "I do think we'll see Cole again, and this will give him an opportunity to get some at-bats there. We like what he brings with the versatility he brings to our bench."

The Yankees might also deem Refsnyder to be big-league ready, in which case there probably wouldn't be a spot for Figueroa on the roster.

Figueroa was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre and will start at third base and bat ninth Thursday, MLB.com's Bryan Hoch reports.

Figueroa has been playing primarily at third base (52 starts) at Triple-A, but he has also had 19 starts at shortstop and three starts at second base, so he can be pretty versatile. He was slashing .317/.372/.415 with three homers and three steals prior to his call up, but is unlikely to see a lot of playing time while up with the Yankees.

Figueroa signed a minor league deal with the Yankees on Monday, Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Figueroa was placed on release waivers by the Rays earlier in the offseason. For that reason, they are responsible for his 2015 salary. Figueroa spent time between Triple-A and the majors, and his .233/.286/.326 with six RBI and six runs scored with the Rays last season. He will most likely begin the season in the minors, and probably won't get a shot at playing for the Yankees barring multiple injuries.

Figueroa is now on track to become a free agent unless he's claimed by another team by Wednesday's deadline. If he goes unclaimed, the Rays will be responsible for his 2015 salary. In 43 at-bats for the Rays last season, Figueroa hit .233 with six RBI and four strikeouts.

Figueroa played in 27 games with the Rays last season, batting just .233/.286/.612 with no home runs and six RBI over that span. He was optioned to Triple-A Durham in August, and it now appears the team isn't sold on him. The 27-year-old was a casualty of Thursday's deadline, where the Rays had to decide whether to add players to the 40-man roster or risk losing the to the Rule 5 Draft.

Figueroa was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune reports.

Figueroa saw all of 31 at-bats after his June 23 recall, but he made the most of his 17 August trips to the plate, smacking seven hits and drawing two walks while striking out once. With the team needing to add a bullpen arm, however, he was a logical choice for a demotion, but Figueroa will likely return to a bench role no later than Sept. 1.

Figueroa went 2-for-3 with two singles and one RBI in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Angels.

Figueroa got the start at second base Friday night and picked up his first hit since being recalled from the minors back on June 23. The 27-year-old second baseman has swung the bat extremely well for Triple-A Durham this season, posting a .300/.385/.420 slash line across 239 plate appearances. However, he has not yet been able to produce similar results at the major league level, going just 5-for-29 while appearing in 16 games.
