Tue Apr 7 201514:16Sweeney granted release Tuesday
Sweeney was granted his release Tuesday, ESPN Chicago's Jesse Rogers reports.
Sweeney was designated for assignment Sunday, and he'll now look to find work elsewhere. He probably won't get a big-league roster spot, but he may find a team that gives him a better chance than his old one to eventually get back to the majors. Sweeney did himself no favors with a poor spring training.
Sun Apr 5 201515:33Sweeney designated for assignment Sunday
Sweeney was designated for assignment Sunday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
The Cubs are dealing with some injuries in the outfield, but it still wasn't quite enough for Sweeney to make the Opening Day roster. While he may draw interest from other organizations, Sweeney comes with very little upside from either a real-life or fantasy perspective.
Wed Apr 1 201522:21Sweeney
Sweeney, Matt Szczur, and Jonathan Herrera are battling for the final two spots on the Cubs' bench, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
With Chris Denorfia (hamstring) expected to start the year on the DL and Chris Coghlan (stiff neck) a little banged up, the veteran Sweeney would seem to have one of those two spots as he could play left field until the Coghlan/Denorfia duo are 100 percent. Then again, Szczur could handle that job as well.
Thu Mar 26 201523:44Sweeney just 5-26 this spring and hasn't driven in run
Sweeney is just 5-for-26 this spring and hasn't driven in a run.
Sweeney will probably make the team as an extra outfielder, and he's one of those veterans who probably doesn't need to show much in camp, but a .491 OPS doesn't exactly make a positive impression.
Tue Nov 4 201416:50Sweeney (hamstring) activated from 60-day DL on Tuesday
Sweeney (hamstring) was activated from the 60-day DL on Tuesday, Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald reports.
Sweeney missed close to three months due to hamstring issues in 2014 and was barely above replacement level when healthy, posting a .642 in 77 games. He'll be back to play out the final year of his two-year pact with Chicago, but Sweeney is likely behind Justin Ruggiano for the fourth-outfielder role and could end up being a DFA candidate early in the season.

Sweeney (hamstring) has been moved to the 60-day DL and is done for the season, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
He won't play again this season, as the Cubs needed to clear a 40-man spot for Ryan Kalish.
Wed Sep 3 201418:12Sweeney (hamstring) likely done for season
Sweeney (hamstring) is likely done for the season, Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports.
Sweeney began a rehab assignment recently, but it appears his hamstring is not healthy enough to handle a full workload, and he will likely be shut down for the season. Sweeney will be back with the Cubs next season after signing a two-year deal with the club last October.

Sweeney has been on the disabled list since Aug. 27, but is starting to work towards a return from the disabled list by joining the Arizona League team. He appears to be on track for a return from the disabled list as soon as he is first eligible on Sept. 11, but it's unclear how much playing time he will receive when he returns.
Wed Aug 27 201415:48Sweeney (hamstring) placed on 15-day DL on Wednesday
Sweeney (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day DL on Wednesday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
With Sweeney and Justin Ruggiano (ankle) both landing on the DL on Wednesday, the path his clear for prospect Jorge Soler to pick up at-bats in right field. Sweeney could be back with the Cubs before the end of the season, but he'll likely operate as a fourth or fifth outfielder once healthy.

Cubs manager Rick Renteria said Saturday that Ryan Sweeney has suffered a setback in his recovery from a strained right hamstring.
The initial timetable called for Sweeney to return in late-May, so though the severity of the setback isn't known, it's unlikely that he'll return until June. The Cubs will continue to play matchups and utilize the outfielders that they have to the best of their abilities.
