INF Grant Green had his contract purchased from Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, and he started at second base against the A's, who drafted him in the first round in 2009. Green went 2-for-5 with a double in San Francisco's 12-6 victory. Green hit .294 with 12 doubles and six home runs in 65 games for Sacramento this season after signing a minor league contract with the Giants. He had been sidelined since being injured on June 19 in a freak accident during a Triple-A game. Current Giants OF Mac Williamson accidentally sent his bat flying into the dugout on a swing, and it hit Green's right kneecap. He had four stitches, which came out Wednesday. Green hit .249 over parts of three major league seasons from 2013 to 2015 with the A's and the Angels.

All 29 other MLB teams passed on Green after he was designated for assignment last week, so he will remain in the Angels' organization for the time being. While Green can play all around the field, he's done little at the plate in 109 games at the highest level to suggest he will ever be more than a fringe major leaguer (.249/.283/.335).

His defensive versatility was not enough to compensate for the lack of offensive production at the major league level. In 21 games with the big club this season, Green went just 8-for-42 (.190 average) with one extra-base hit and 14 strikeouts, lowering his line at the highest level to .249/.283/.335. The 28-year-old did hit .306/.337/.449 at Triple-A Salt Lake this season, so it's at least possible he could draw interest from another club.

Green is out of the lineup Tuesday, the Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher reports.

Taylor Featherston was activated Tuesday, meaning the playing time at second base could be closer to a 50/50 split while Johnny Giavotella (illness) is out.

Green (knee) is back in the lineup hitting ninth Thursday in Detroit.

Green is in line for a steady dose of at-bats while Johnny Giavotella (illness) is on the DL. His top tool is his hit tool, so he could hit for a solid average down the stretch, but there won't be much in the way of counting stats.

He is starting at second base and batting ninth Saturday against right-hander Marco Estrada, with Johnny Giavotella still under the weather. Green, who can play both middle infield positions as well as the outfield, was in line for a September callup after batting .306/.337/.449 in 93 games with Salt Lake this season. The 27-year-old figures to stick with the team in a utility role the rest of the way.
