Corey's younger brother has flashed some real hitting ability every once in a while, but he's finished with averages of .214 in 187 at-bats and .180 in 89 at-bats the last two years. He remains quite a long shot to win a spot on Detroit's bench.

Wed Jan 4 201215:52Tigers ink INF-OF Patterson to minors deal
Tigers signed INF-OF Eric Patterson to a minor league contract.
As Matt Eddy of Baseball America notes, this is his fifth organization in the past five years. Patterson, who turns 29 in April, was released by the Padres last month after batting just .180/.272/.292 with two home runs and eight RBI in 103 plate appearances. His speed is useful and he is capable of playing multiple positions, but he's coming off back-to-back terrible seasons.

Mon May 30 201116:46Eric Patterson swipes seventh base
Eric Patterson went 2-for-5 and stole his seventh base Monday against the Braves.
If Patterson ever hits, his speed is going to give him some serious fantasy value. He's 34-for-38 stealing bases in 492 career at-bats. Unfortunately, he's batting just .189 so far this year, and since he's a lousy defensive second baseman, the Padres only want to give him so much time there with Orlando Hudson out.

Thu Mar 24 201118:06Patterson may open season on disabled list
Eric Patterson (hamstring) is not expected to return to action until Monday.

Mon Mar 21 201119:01Patterson out with sore hamstring muscle
Eric Patterson will miss three or four days with a sore left hamstring muscle.
It doesn't sound like anything to worry about right now. Patterson, who was the player to be named in the Adrian Gonzalez deal, is batting .438 (14-for-32) with seven doubles, one triple, one home run and eight RBI this spring. He should play all over the field for the Friars this season.

Patterson was scheduled to play second base, but Kevin Frandsen took his spot instead. The Padres don't seem all that concerned about the calf injury, though injuries of that type do tend to linger. For now, Patterson can be considered day-to-day.

Thu Dec 16 201015:06Padres acquire Eric Patterson from Red Sox
Padres acquired 2B/OF Eric Patterson from the Red Sox.
He's the player to be named in the Adrian Gonzalez deal. It's not clear at this point what the Pads plan to do with Patterson, but they'd likely at least give him the opportunity to compete for the second base job. If he doesn't win that, he'd fill a bench role as a reserve infielder and outfielder. Patterson has some wheels and would be an interesting sleeper for steals as a regular.

Tue Aug 17 201016:12Patterson hits disabled list with neck strain
Red Sox placed OF Eric Patterson on the 15-day disabled list with a neck strain.
Daniel Nava has been a much more productive player this season for the Red Sox and was called up in a corresponding move. Patterson probably didn't need a whole 15 days off because of a neck strain, but he has a .224/.279/.435 batting line in 170 at-bats and the Red Sox are trying to reach the playoffs.
