Tue Apr 10 201219:26Joey Devine to undergo Tommy John surgery
Joey Devine will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.
It's what we were worried about after it was revealed that the oft-injured right-hander would need some sort of procedure. It will be the second Tommy John surgery for Devine, who has pitched just 23 innings in the big leagues since 2008 and will likely be sidelined into the start of the 2013 season. You have to wonder if the A's will just cut him loose.

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the biceps tendinitis that has bothered Joey Devine for the past several years hasn't been resolved.
Devine says that Dr. James Andrews is looking at his MRI, with the best case scenario simply being more tendinitis. The worst case scenario however, is flexor-tendon surgery. What was once a very promising young career has been derailed by repetitive injuries.

Thu Mar 8 201218:38Joey Devine rocked Thursday
Joey Devine was knocked around in a relief appearance Thursday, allowing four runs on one hit and three walks over just 1/3 of an inning in a loss to the Dodgers.
Devine has been mentioned as a possible closer candidate by the coaching staff, but he'd have to be considered a longshot candidate, so he can't afford outings like this. The injury-prone reliever will likely be utilized in a setup role in 2012.

Joey Devine has dealt with back issues off and on for the past month or two.
It's surely the reason why he wasn't promoted when rosters expanded given that he held a 3.52 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 23 innings of relief this season for the A's. Devine is constantly battling injuries, but at least it's not his arm this time.
