Mon Jul 9 201213:21Gibbons announces his retirement
Jay Gibbons announced his retirement.
The 35-year-old outfielder posted a .260/.315/.453 batting line and smacked 127 home runs in nine seasons between the Orioles and Dodgers. He struggled in Milwaukee's farm system this year. Without a clear path back to the majors, Gibbons decided to hang it up.

Wed Feb 22 201216:56Brewers ink Jay Gibbons to minors contract
Brewers signed OF Jay Gibbons to a minor league contract.
Gibbons will be in minor league camp, meaning he won't be given a shot to crack the Opening Day roster. The 34-year-old outfielder batted just .255/.323/.345 in 62 plate appearances last season for the Dodgers.

Fri Jun 10 201121:22Gibbons accepts minor league assignment
Jay Gibbons has accepted a minor league assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque.
Gibbons cleared waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week. The Dodgers are going with Tony Gwynn Jr. in left field right now, so the 34-year-old could eventually find his way back to the big club.

Fri Jun 10 201112:36Jay Gibbons in holding pattern
Jay Gibbons has cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A Albuquerque, but the move isn't official yet because Gibbons has yet to decide if he'll accept the assignment.
The Dodgers could have kept Gibbons around had they sent Jerry Sands down earlier. When asked why they didn't, manager Don Mattingly replied, "I don't know, really." But Mattingly then explained why Gibbons needed to be sent out. "Gibby wasn't giving us enough to basically have a guy that's pretty much one-dimensional," Mattingly said. "He's not going to steal a bag for you. You have to defend for him." Gibbons would seem to have a good chance of being back up with the Dodgers at some point if he accepts the assignment.

Mon Jun 6 201115:57Dodgers DFA Jay Gibbons
Dodgers designated OF Jay Gibbons for assignment.
Gibbons never really got the playing time he was hoping for in Los Angeles and wound up batting .255/.323/.345 in only 62 plate appearances. The 34-year-old should draw interest from other organizations.

Wed May 18 201111:28Jay Gibbons to start in LF against RHP
Jay Gibbons is expected to be the primary left fielder against right-handed pitching in the coming days.
Gibbons has started just one game since May 9, but his double in that game was one of only five Dodgers hits, and manager Don Mattingly evidently wants to give him more of a shot at extended playing time. Jerry Sands, who is batting only .200/.291/.307 in the first 75 at-bats of his career, will start in left against southpaws.

Tue May 3 201117:04Dodgers activate OF Gibbons from DL
Dodgers activated OF Jay Gibbons from the disabled list.
Gibbons hit safely in six out of his final seven games with Triple-A Albuquerque and is apparently over his recent vision problems. He had a chance at a prominent role with the Dodgers entering spring training, but Jerry Sands has likely displaced him as the starter in right field.

Jay Gibbons told reporters this weekend that he believes his vision issues have been corrected.
Gibbons has been on the disabled list since the start of the regular season with blurred vision in his left eye. He underwent a procedure recently that apparently took care of that issue and is now playing regularly in minor league rehab games at Triple-A Albuquerque.

Thu Apr 7 201117:44Gibbons set to begin rehab assignment
Jay Gibbons (eye) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Albuquerque.
Gibbons was placed on the disabled list at the end of spring training because he was having difficulty with depth perception in his left eye. He's been fitted with new contacts and is now seeing the ball much better. The Dodgers should activate him in about a week.

Thu Mar 31 201117:33Dodgers place OF Gibbons on DL
Dodgers placed OF Jay Gibbons on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26, with blurred vision in his left eye.
Gibbons saw a specialist earlier this week in an effort to correct the depth perception in his left eye. He's back to wearing contacts in both eyes and is already seeing the ball much better. He'll need some time to get back up to speed, but look for him to share at-bats with Marcus Thames and Tony Gwynn Jr. in left field once he's ready.

Tue Mar 29 201110:24Jay Gibbons will open year on disabled list
Jay Gibbons will open the season on the disabled list due to lingering issues with his left eye.
Gibbons was prescribed better-fitting contact lenses two weeks ago, but they haven't done the trick and he's still struggling to pick up breaking balls. While he gets that figured out, look for Marcus Thames and Tony Gwynn Jr. to draw starts in left field.

Thu Mar 17 201111:56Gibbons reports improvement with vision
Jay Gibbons said Thursday that he sees "significantly better" after getting new contact lenses.
Gibbons hasn't had the best spring. He was sick early in camp and batted just .091 (2-for-22) before his recent vision problems. His old contacts were the wrong size and prescription, so hopefully these new ones do the trick. The 34-year-old still has a chance to share the left field job.

Mon Mar 14 201112:37Gibbons out a few days with eye issues
Jay Gibbons will miss the next few days of camp while undergoing extensive eye testing.
It doesn't sound like anything overly serious. Gibbons is just 2-for-22 in Cactus League play this spring, but he's still in line to see a good amount of starts in left field for the Dodgers once the regular season begins.

Fri Mar 11 201118:16Gibbons now hitting .059
Jay Gibbons went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts against the A's on Friday.
Currently set to see a ton of at-bats in left field this season, the 34-year-old Gibbons is hitting .059 with zero home runs and zero RBI this spring. He was slowed by a case of the flu earlier this month, but it would behoove him to see his bat wake up soon.

Wed Mar 2 201111:35Gibbons (flu) in Wednesday's lineup
Jay Gibbons (flu) is in Wednesday's lineup as the designated hitter.
Gibbons has been out of the lineup for the early part of the exhibition schedule due to flu-like symptoms. Assuming the Dodgers don't make any last minute additions, the 34-year-old will see semi-regular at-bats in left field this season.

Tue Mar 1 201121:09Gibbons (flu) returns to workouts Tuesday
Jay Gibbons (flu) returned to workouts at Dodgers' camp Tuesday.
"I went two days without eating anything," said Gibbons, who lost five pounds because of the flu. "I started eating Monday. I hope tomorrow I'll feel well enough to DH. It's possible." Dodgers manager Don Mattingly wouldn't dismiss the possibility that Gibbons could DH in Wednesday's game, but said that he might need an extra day.

Jay Gibbons will miss Sunday's scheduled spring game due to flu-like symptoms.
Gibbons came down with the flu Saturday and actually reported feeling better on Sunday morning, but the Dodgers are going to play it safe and give him some extra rest. The 33-year-old is expected to see a good amount of starts in left field this season for Los Angeles.

Wed Jan 12 201119:04Gibbons forced home from VZ due to eye issue
Jay Gibbons was forced home prematurely from the Venezuelan Winter League because of complaints of blurred vision.
Gibbons had his eyes examined Tuesday in Los Angeles and the Dodgers expressed confidence Wednesday that it is not a serious issue. The 33-year-old outfielder inked a one-year, $650,000 contract with the club in November and is expected to see a lot of action in left field this season.

Thu Nov 4 201015:40Dodgers re-sign Gibbons to one-year deal
Dodgers re-signed OF Jay Gibbons to a one-year, $400,000 contract.
He has a chance to earn more with incentives. Gibbons, now 33, was back at the big league level this season for the first time since 2007, batting .280/.313/.507 with five homers and 17 RBI in 75 at-bats down the stretch. He has at least earned himself a bench job heading into the 2011 season, though we're not expecting much.
