Wed Jan 16 201310:55Vicente Padilla signs with Japanese team
Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com reports that right-hander Vicente Padilla has agreed to a one-year, $3.25 million contract with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League.
It's easy to see why he jumped at the opportunity, as it's unlikely he received a comparable offer stateside. Padilla, 35, posted a 4.50 ERA and 51/15 K/BB ratio over 50 innings last season as a reliever with the Red Sox. There's a decent chance he could resurface in the majors after 2013.

Thu Apr 26 201209:15Padilla reports tightness on left side
Vicente Padilla reported feeling tightness in his left side after Wednesday's relief appearance.
Padilla expects to be fine going forward, but it's probably a situation that the Red Sox will monitor closely. The right-hander threw a scoreless frame on Wednesday night against the Twins but still carries an ugly 8.64 ERA in 8 1/3 total innings this year.

Sun Apr 1 201217:27Vicente Padilla goes 1 2/3 scoreless
Vicente Padilla started and pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings Sunday in Boston's 5-1 win over Minnesota.
With Andrew Miller bound for the disabled list, Padilla appears likely to make the Red Sox as a middle reliever. He's battled a hamstring injury this spring, but he has a 3.55 ERA and a nice 11/1 K/BB ratio in 12 2/3 innings.

Sun Mar 25 201212:11Padilla not likely to fill long relief role
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine doesn't believe Vicente Padilla could fill the multiple-innings relief role played by Alfredo Aceves last season.
"I don't think so right now. I don't have a great feeling," Valentine said. "Only because he's not sure about it, so it's hard for me to be sure, talking with him." Padilla, 34, is looking to secure a bullpen spot after being removed from the competition for the Red Sox rotation. He has pitched to mixed results in five appearances this spring.

Fri Mar 23 201212:08Padilla, Miller no longer in mix to start
Vicente Padilla (hamstring) and Andrew Miller (hamstring) have been removed from the competition for spots in the Red Sox rotation.
Hamstring injuries have decisions necessary, as their innings have been limited in camp and neither are ready to return to game action yet. Padilla will now compete for a bullpen spot when he's ready, while Miller seems like to start the season on the DL or as a starter at Triple-A. Daniel Bard, Alfredo Aceves, Aaron Cook and Felix Doubront are now competing for the final two spots in the rotation.

Vicente Padilla suffered a strained hamstring while lifting weights Tuesday in Red Sox camp.
The Red Sox haven't addressed how long Padilla is going to be out, but hamstring strains usually take over a week to heal. The 34-year-old righty has allowed 13 hits and five earned runs in 10 innings this spring.

Tue Mar 13 201222:23Padilla perfect in relief Tuesday night
Vicente Padilla threw three perfect innings Tuesday against the Yankees.
Padilla was smoked for four runs over two innings in his last outing, but he was at the top of his game on Tuesday night. The veteran right-hander struck out four of the nine batters he faced, including Alex Rodriguez and Russell Martin. While he's still a candidate for the fifth starter job, the Red Sox could potentially carry him as a long-man out of the bullpen.

Fri Mar 9 201222:48Padilla gives up four runs in two innings Fri
Vicente Padilla was touched up for four runs over two innings in Friday's loss to the Pirates.
Padilla sat the Pirates down in order in his first inning of work thanks to some excellent defense from Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia, but he was touched up for five hits (including three consecutive doubles) in his second frame. He didn't issue a walk or strike out a batter. The veteran right-hander is in the mix for one of the final two spots in the starting rotation along with Daniel Bard, Alfredo Aceves, Andrew Miller and Felix Doubront, but an ugly night like this doesn't help his chances.

Mon Mar 5 201222:43Padilla tosses two scoreless innings in debut
Vicente Padilla opened his spring with two scoreless innings against the Twins on Monday night.
Padilla gave up three hits while fanning two and walking none. The veteran right-hander mixed in his slow eephus pitch a couple times, but he was also clocked at around 93 mph on his fastball. Who knows how long he'll be able to hold up physically, but he could make for an interesting rotation candidate this spring.

Fri Feb 24 201210:11Vicente Padilla doesn't want to be a reliever
Vicente Padilla isn't interested in pitching out of the bullpen if he fails to win one of the spots in the Red Sox rotation.
When asked why he signed with Boston, Padilla said, "Other teams needed me as a reliever." The veteran righty then shook his head when asked about potentially pitching in relief, adding "Now I'm working as a starter. I think my arm is good." The 34-year-old might be the favorite to break camp with the No. 5 job, but he'll receive competition from Alfredo Aceves, Andrew Miller, Aaron Cook and Carlos Silva.

Sun Feb 19 201208:37Vicente Padilla gets to camp on time
Vicente Padilla arrived at Red Sox camp on time Sunday.
Padilla dealt with legal issues in his native Nicaragua a few weeks ago regarding a child support case. The problem was evidently resolved, though, and he'll be on track with the rest of the pitching staff. Padilla might be the favorite at the moment to land the final spot in the Red Sox rotation.

Thu Feb 2 201212:14Padilla expected on time for spring training
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington told Alex Speier of WEEI.com that they expect Vicente Padilla to arrive to spring training on time.
Padilla is reportedly facing an order not to leave his native Nicaragua due to a child support case. He only owes around $4,200, so it's probably fair to say this matter will be resolved fairly quickly. "At this point there is no reason to believe he is in jeopardy of reporting late," said Cherington. Padilla, 34, signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox last month and could be in the mix for a rotation spot during spring training.

Thu Feb 2 201209:00Padilla ordered to not leave Nicaragua
According to the La Prensa newspaper in Nicaragua, Vicente Padilla is facing an order not to leave Nicaragua until a child support matter is resolved.
Padilla owes roughly $4,200 in child support. He had an arrest warrant issued for his failure to show up in court for a child support hearing, only to have the warrant revoked. The 34-year-old right-hander signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox last month, but he apparently won't be able to travel to the United States until there is some resolution.

Mon Jan 16 201214:49BoSox finalize minor league deal with Padilla
Red Sox signed RHP Vicente Padilla to a minor league contract.
The deal also includes an invitation to spring training, where Padilla will get a legitimate shot at landing a spot in the Red Sox' starting rotation. The 34-year-old missed nearly all of the 2011 season due to neck surgery, but he posted a cool 4.07 ERA and 84/24 K/BB ratio across 95 innings in 2010 for the Dodgers. If he can't crack the rotation in Boston, he could be used as a long reliever.

Mon Jan 16 201212:35Red Sox reach agreement with Vicente Padilla
According to MLB.com's Peter Gammons, the Red Sox have agreed to terms with Vicente Padilla.
No word yet on the financial details, but it's probably an incentives-driven one-year deal with a low base salary. Padilla missed most of the 2011 season due to neck surgery, but he posted a decent 4.07 ERA and 84/24 K/BB ratio across 95 innings in 2010 for the Dodgers and could be a useful swing man this year in Boston.
