Wed Nov 19 201416:37Ely signed minor league contract with Brewers on Wednesday
Ely signed a minor league contract with the Brewers on Wednesday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Ely seemed to find his niche working out of the bullpen after returning from Tommy John surgery last season, posting a 2.52 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 35:14 K:BB over 39.1 innings with the Red Sox's Triple-A Pawtucket affiliate. There's an outside chance Ely could crack the major league roster at some point next year, but he'd likely work exclusively in middle relief.

Fri Mar 8 201316:57John Ely goes three scoreless in relief
John Ely pitched three scoreless innings out of the Astros pen Friday against the Braves.
Ely's chances of landing a rotation spot have been boosted by Jordan Lyles' struggles and Erik Bedard's injury. However, he didn't really help himself until today; he entered with a 12.27 ERA through two spring appearances. Ely probably won't have any fantasy value if he does win the spot.

Ely started 18 games for the Dodgers in 2010, but has appeared in just seven games in the majors the past two seasons. However, he had a 3.20 ERA in 168-plus innings at the Triple-A level last year and could be an option for the Astros' rotation at some point in 2013.

Sat Aug 6 201108:23John Ely optioned
Dodgers optioned RHP John Ely to Triple-A Albuquerque.
We figured Ely would probably take Rubby De La Rosa's spot in the rotation, but that assignment will go to Nate Eovaldi, as Ely has been sent down before appearing in a game. He'll return to a 5.43 ERA at Triple-A.

Mon Aug 1 201119:05Dodgers call up RHP Ely from minors
Dodgers recalled RHP John Ely from Triple-A Albuquerque.
He'll take the place of the injured Rubby De La Rosa on the active roster and quite possibly in the starting rotation, as well. Ely, 25, has allowed six runs over 8 2/3 innings (6.23 ERA) with the Dodgers this season, but has spent most of the year in the minors. He doesn't come recommended in fantasy leagues.

Dodgers recalled RHP John Ely from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Ely has struggle lately at Triple-A, posting a 5.01 ERA on the year while striking out only 39 over 59 1/3 innings. But, he has plenty of experience and is expected to serve as a long man in the bullpen, with Rubby De La Rosa taking Jon Garland's spot in the rotation.

Dodgers optioned RHP John Ely to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Ely allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings in Sunday's loss to the Padres. That the Dodgers sent him directly back to the minors means that Jon Garland has a pretty good chance to return from the disabled list Friday.

Dodgers recalled RHP John Ely from Triple-A Albuquerque.
He'll get the ball for Sunday's start, though it will only be a spot start with Jon Garland expected to come off the DL soon. Though he does have a favorable matchup in San Diego, Ely would still be a risk from a fantasy perspective.

Sun Mar 20 201118:08Ely has poor afternoon against Chicago
John Ely turned in his second straight shaky start on Sunday, giving up six hits and three runs in five innings of work against the White Sox.
He's now allowed 12 hits and seven runs in his past nine innings of work. Ely started out very strong before fading badly down the stretch last season, and can't be counted on to do much with whatever limited innings he gets in 2011.

Mon Mar 14 201118:07Ely finally gives up some runs
Entering the day with a 0.00 ERA through six innings this spring, John Ely finally got hit hard, allowing six hits and four runs in four innings against the Rangers.
Josh Hamilton took him deep for a three-run homer in the third inning. Currently in line to begin the season at Triple-A Albuquerque, Ely will be worth monitoring in NL-only leagues if he's eventually called up to make a few starts.

John Ely started and threw two scoreless innings Sunday as the Dodgers shut out the Angels 5-0.
Dodgers pitchers allowed just four hits and combined for 11 strikeouts. Ely surrendered one hit and fanned three before departing. With Vicente Padilla down, Ely is now next in line should a rotation spot open up. He's probably going to begin the season in the minors, though.
