Fri Jan 24 201419:33Marlins ink Ty Wigginton to minors contract
Marlins signed INF Ty Wigginton to a minor league contract.
The deal includes an invitation to major league spring training. The 36-year-old struggled during his time with the Cardinals in 2013, slashing a meager .158/.238/.193 with three RBI in 57 at-bats. With his versatility, he could become a valuable addition to the Marlins provided he has anything left in the tank.

Tue Jul 9 201313:03Cardinals release veteran INF Ty Wigginton
Cardinals released INF Ty Wigginton.
Signed to a two-year, $5 million deal during the offseason, Wigginton has done very little in limited playing time with the Cardinals this season, batting just .158/.238/.193 in 63 plate appearances. The 35-year-old should latch on elsewhere pretty quickly now that he can sign for the prorated major league minimum. The Cardinals have called up catch Rob Johnson to replace him on the active roster.

Tue Jul 9 201310:46Cards weighing options with Ty Wigginton
Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals are weighing making a roster move involving Ty Wigginton.
The Cardinals signed Wigginton to a two-year, $5 million contract during the winter, but he hasn't drawn much playing time and owns a miserable .158/.238/.193 batting line in 63 plate appearances. The 35-year-old could be designated for assignment, but Strauss hears that the Cardinals have also explored the possibility of getting him to agree to a minor league assignment. A roster move could be made before Tuesday's game.

Tue May 21 201303:16Wigginton goes 0-for-2 with a walk in loss
Ty Wigginton went 0-for-2 with a walk in Monday's loss to the Padres.
He was also caught stealing. Wigginton doesn't draw many starts, and he doesn't do much with them when he does, slashing .194/.286/.226 with no homers or steals and one RBI through 31 at-bats. St. Louis doesn't often make mistakes, but the two-year, $5 million deal they gifted Wigginton in mid-December certainly qualifies.

Tue Mar 12 201316:09Ty Wigginton hitting .125 this spring
Ty Wigginton went 0-for-3 on Tuesday and is 4-for-32 with one RBI this spring.
If Wigginton were in camp on a minor league deal, one imagines he'd have a tough time winning a spot on the St. Louis bench. Fortunately for him, he was given a two-year, $5 million deal in December, so he has nothing to worry about.

Fri Dec 14 201215:46Ty Wigginton signs two-year deal with Cards
Cardinals signed INF/OF Ty Wigginton to a two-year, $5 million contract.
Wigginton passed a physical in St. Louis Friday, making the deal official. The 35-year-old batted just .235/.314/.375 last season for the Phillies but posted his seventh straight year with double-digit home runs. He should give the Cards the right-handed pop off the bench that they were looking for and also offers some versatility.

Fri Dec 14 201208:26Cardinals sign Ty Wigginton to two-year deal
According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Cardinals have signed Ty Wigginton to a two-year contract in the $5 million range.
The Cards were looking for a little more right-handed pop off the bench, and Wigginton satisfies that need. The 35-year-old batted just .235/.314/.375 last season for the Phillies but posted his seventh straight season with double-digit home runs. He also boasts a nice .270/.354/.456 career line against left-handed pitching. Wigginton will back up at both infield and outfield corners and can also fill in at second base in a pinch.

Wed Jul 25 201219:10Yankees asked Phils about Ty Wigginton
Kevin Kernan of the New York Post reports that the Yankees asked the Phillies about the availability of Ty Wigginton, but Philadelphia said they were "not ready to move him yet."
The Yankees could use Wigginton at third base while Alex Rodriguez is on the shelf, but evidently Philly wants to hang on to him with Placido Polanco also out of action. While the Phillies have played much better ball of late, they can't realistically consider themselves playoff contenders. So if the Yanks are persistent in their pursuit of Wigginton, they could probably make something happen.

Fri May 25 201200:03Wigginton has three hits, HR to lead Phillies
Ty Wigginton had a nice night at the plate on Thursday, going 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI in the Phillies 10-9 victory over the Cardinals.
Wigginton also came around to score three times in the game. His solo shot off of Victor Marte in the eighth inning provided valuable insurance, and would stand as the eventual winning run in the game. He's now hitting .254 with three homers and 16 RBI in a part time role for the Phillies. He's still a useful contributor in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues, though he stands to see a considerable drop in playing time upon Ryan Howard's return.

Fri May 11 201216:45Wigginton could be scratched from lineup
Ty Wigginton could be a late scratch from Friday's lineup depending upon how he feels after batting practice.
Wigginton hasn't started since Monday due to soreness in his side. If he feels good enough to go, he'll play first base and bat fifth against Padres' left-hander Clayton Richard.

Tue Apr 24 201210:07Wigginton has six-game hitting streak
Ty Wigginton has hit safely in each of his last six games.
Wigginton's batting average was down to .222 a week ago, but he's now hitting .308 (12-for-39) through 14 games this season. The 34-year-old is a .265 career hitter and batted just .242 with the Rockies last year, but his multi-position eligibility makes him worth considering in and deeper mixed formats.

Thu Apr 5 201209:49Wigginton starting at 1B on Opening Day
Ty Wigginton is starting at first base for the Phillies on Opening Day against the Pirates.
Jim Thome is also expected to see semi-regular starts at first base as Ryan Howard continues his recovery from a torn Achilles tendon. Wigginton hasn't posted an OPS better than .731 since the 2008 season and can be ignored this year in most fantasy formats.

Mon Mar 26 201216:22Ty Wigginton goes hitless in loss
Ty Wigginton went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts Monday against the Red Sox.
Wigginton is expected to be the Phillies' primary first baseman in the early going, but he'll probably be a liability in the process. He's batting .234 with no homers in 47 at-bats this spring. The journeyman hasn't managed a .750 OPS in the regular season since 2008.

Wed Jan 18 201216:17Wigginton to open 2012 as Phils' starting 1B
Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said Ty Wigginton will start at first base to open the 2012 season.
And Jim Thome will serve as his backup. Ryan Howard has made steady progress from his ruptured Achilles tendon but probably won't be ready to come off the disabled list until late May. Wigginton, 34, tallied 15 home runs and 47 RBI in 130 games with the Phillies last year. He'll carry some value in NL-only fantasy leagues.

Sun Nov 20 201119:13Phillies acquire Wigginton from Rox for PTBNL
Phillies acquired infielder Ty Wigginton from the Rockies for a player to be named later or cash.
On a slow day in baseball, the Phillies made a nice, stealthy acquisition in taking Wigginton off Colorado's hands. The Rockies were looking to shed Wigginton even if it meant covering some of his $3.5 million salary for next season (with a $4 million option for 2013 or a $500,000 buyout). Per Jon Morosi of FoxSports.com, there is no deadline specified for the exchange of player or cash. The 34-year-old Wigginton batted .242/.315/.416 with 15 home runs, 47 RBI and a .731 OPS over 446 plate appearances this season while playing first base, third base and both corner outfield spots. In Philly, he'll provide insurance at first base while Ryan Howard is shelved and challenge Placido Polanco at third base, all while providing a bench bat and another backup outfielder. Wigginton hasn't topped a .750 OPS since 2008 and isn't a strong defender at third base, but he's a poor man's Michael Cuddyer for a fraction of the price.

Wed Oct 5 201113:22Rockies looking to trade Ty Wigginton
Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies are looking to trade Ty Wigginton, even if it means covering some of his salary for next season.
Wigginton is owed $3.5 million next season while his contract includes either a $4 million option for 2013 or a $500,000 buyout. The 33-year-old batted .242/.315/.416 with 15 home runs, 47 RBI and a .731 OPS over 446 plate appearances this season while playing first base, third base and both corner outfield spots. He could draw interest as a part-time player.

Mon Jul 25 201112:54Pirates interested in Ty Wigginton
Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Pirates are interested in Ty Wigginton.
The Bucs demoted third baseman Pedro Alvarez to the minor leagues earlier this year after the youngster got off to a slow start and they've struggled to find consistent production at the hot corner since. Wigginton would help, and he shouldn't cost more than a mid-level prospect.
